Advice/Career [AUS] [Global] International Students - gathering stats/info on pathway's success

In an effort to help students better - I notice that one of the most common questions we get asked here is - I am from x and want to study abroad, how do I get into honours/masters or other psych programs as an international student.

I plan to write a guide that will live in a wiki page associated within this subreddit.

Not just Australian focus (but for me this is the easiest for me to validate) - Overseas programs, I will verify the information as I can.

So I was hoping to outline the end to end process - which often starts getting overseas study validated by the regulator, and then making applications. If there are common known stat's about the success rates or the number of slots available for internationals vs domestic students.

Even if you are a post grad student and you know that a couple of international students are in the cohort - please share and which uni. this will help students understand which uni's they should focus on as some will strictly focus on domestic students only.

If you are an international student and want to share your own personal experiences navigating Australian or other countries university, and whether you got in or what the feedback (if any) was for being unsuccessful.

Share as much detail as you can and I will transform it into a useful guide.

If you prefer to keep the information you want to share private - send a message to the mod team, but easier to post a comment.

Announcement Please do not ask psychology students for clinical advice and counselling.

Please do not enquire for diagnosis nor for personal therapy outside of academic-based situations. As they are still learning, students are likely unqualified to attend to one’s concerns.

In addition, this subreddit is not an appropriate place to obtain clinical guidance. Please seek professional help; or, if assistance is required finding resources to receive appropriate counselling, message moderation.

Therapeutic requests include not only those on the poster's behalf, but others' as well.

Advice/Career USA AL - can i get into a clinical psych PhD program and specialize in clinical neuropsychology without minoring in neuroscience?

I'm currently in my sophomore year and I'm already working in a research lab (specifically focused on neuroscience and social behavior). i really want to be a clinical neuropsychologist, but i absolutely suck at general biology and chemistry. ive dropped chemistry THRICE now and im debating dropping biology today as I have a D in the class and a C in the lab. otherwise, im an honors student and have a 3.8 gpa, so im not a bad student by any means, and i feel i could get into a clinical psych program pretty easily if i dropped my neuro minor (so id only be required to take one science, so id take physics bc its really easy at my uni). however, i dont know if specializing in clinical neuropsych would then be more challenging if i didnt take bio or chem. im still planning on taking all of the neuroscience classes i can, but just avoiding those that have a bio or chem prerequisite. so please give me your thoughts! i know i could power through but i know itd ruin my gpa, and if i could get to the same place without it, id much prefer that.

also, if yall could give advice fairly quickly id appreciate it bc todays the last day to drop :') i have 4 more exams that i could technically use to get my grade up, but again, i dont know if i have the time with my psych exams being usually the same day or close to, and my research job taking up most of my time.

Advice/Career [AUS] Should I do an Honours or a Graduate Dipolma?

Hi all,

I'm in my final couple of weeks of my double bachelor's in Psy and Criminology. I'm gonna be honest: my grades are pretty average (65-70 avg), and I was wondering what the next best step is. What's the difference between honours and a graduate diploma (advanced)? What unis are best for each?

Also, side question: thoughts on a GD in forensic psychology or forensic behavioural science?

Thanks so much

Question [AUS] Can you get two interview offers from the same university?

Hi all,

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I’m completing my honours this year and have applied to a few different postgraduate courses in Victoria, including La Trobe. I listed my first preference for MCP and my second for MPP. I recently got an interview offer for MPP and I am thrilled. However, I wonder if I could secure an interview for MCP as well? I am not sure how it works, and was hoping you guys might know a little more. I did call the admissions team and they said it’s possible to get an interview for both courses, but that you would ultimately only receive one offer. Is this true? I assumed since I received an interview for my second preference that it meant they deemed me ineligible for MCP. Also, considering how competitive MCP (in particular) is, I thought you could only receive one interview offer per university. I would love to know a bit more on how this works, and congrats to those who have received offers for interviews!

Question USA PhD in psychology fully funded?

I keep reading that most PhD programs in America are completely paid for, at least for psychology, as well as providing students with a monthly stipend. I find this really hard to believe, does anyone know if this is true? I’m a sophomore in college right now, I’m leaning towards neuropsychology, but I don’t know how I will be able to pay for it if it really isn’t funded.

Advice/Career [FRA] Space Psychology-related Internships

Hi, third-year psychology student here.

I started deep-diving into space psychology last year to compose with my passion for space exploration and my bachelors degree in psychology, and am now on track to apply for an organization psychology masters degree next year.

As a third-year student, an internship can already be pursued this year in order to get some insight into the professional world of psychology. I realize space psychology is a peculiar branch of psychology that is not very democratized as of yet but I would love to know what kind of internships would be best advised for someone trying to 'get in there' so to speak. As part of an excellence program I was already able to get a research internship in social psychology last year so anything near that field that would also be in line with my career project would be wonderful.

Advice/Career [IND] can i do a psychology experiment without a background in it?

I have a masters degree in a language (Sanskrit) and i want to experiment on Sanskrit speakers and non Sanskrit speakers (as a control group) in the field lingusitic relativity. This experiment will be a part of my PhD thesis (Sanskrit).

I have no psychology background, no statistics background.

I have read the existing literature and i am confident that have made a decent design which is inspired by previous studies, hence i think it can be replicated (It's not purely a replication as it would also engage with the existing gap).

Any advice regarding a course on statiscs that would be important to analyse the data? And guys do you think i can do it?

I would have grant from my University for PhD program and i can recruit the participants too. I can make the stimulus and the design but i would need formal guidance to check all that and mainly to analyse the data. What advices can you give for my very first experiment?

Advice/Career USA - Psychology and Marketing Combo and Job Prospects

Hello everyone! I’m doing a change in majors and am considering in getting my Bachelor’s in Psychology but to work in corporate, not clinical. Does anyone here have experience in that area? Is it better for me to get my Masters afterwards and if I want to input Marketing with that as well, should I get my Masters in marketing or do certifications in marketing and get my Masters in Psychology? The things I’ve been reading about job prospects with this degree has me worried.

I’m a junior getting my psychology degree (BA). My plan was always to become a therapist. Im based in Wisconsin(and plan to stay), I also plan to get my masters and eventually an LPCC. But the more I learn the more I worry this won’t be enough.

I’m thinking maybe I should switch and get my LCSW, but i’ve also heard pay concerns there. I’m just not sure what to do, i’d appreciate some guidance.

Discussion [AUS] How difficult is the process of gaining registry through a MPP in comparison to peers in MCP? And how does job hunting go afterwards?

Hi everyone,

I recently saw a post asking how career building goes for student in MCP and the responses seemed to collectively say it was very good.

That made me think about how in MPP, students have to organise a lot of things on their own and the journey to registration has a lot less support. That made me want to learn more about the personal experience of studying and gaining registration through the 5 + 1 pathway.

If anyone is willing to share I would really appreciate that :)

Advice/Career [AUS] Unimelb vs Monash for neuropsychology training?

Hi everyone, I’m looking specifically at the PhD route (I’m aware that Unimelb requires you to be enrolled in the Masters before applying for the PhD while Monash is a direct application).

One of my considerations is that my research interests are more aligned with Unimelb, while I’ve already found a supervisor I really like at Monash (since it’s a direct app). Would anyone be able to share any insight on the quality of both clinical and research postgrad training at both programs?

Advice/Career [AUS] Hi I’m a psychology student in Melbourne and I am finishing up my bachelor of psychology this year. I’m js in a crazy confusion about what to do next; I’ve always thought (and told the world) that I wanna do the full 3+1+2

Hi I’m a psychology student in Melbourne and I am finishing up my bachelor of psychology this year. I’m js in a crazy confusion about what to do next; I’ve always thought (and told the world) that I wanna do the full 3+1+2 pathway and become a registered psychologist and it has been my dream to be a forensic psychologist and deal with criminals or victims etc. but completing my bachelors and doing research, I’ve seen how competitive and drag the pathway has become here. I’ve also seen how much it’s heavily research-based, which is what I hated about my degree and will continue hating. And an honours year is just all research and thesis.

I’ve always wanted to be a psychologist to help people and talk to them and js bring a difference to peoples lives. So I’m thinking maybe doing a masters of counselling and becoming a counsellor/therapist. I know I can still work in forensic settings that way.

However, I’ll be paid less. I’ll also have an unprotected title. I’ll also disappoint my family and others around me. What shall I do? Any advice?

Advice/Career Can I work in the US as a foreigner??? [USA]

I (23F) just finished my bachelor in psychology in Mexico a few months ago and wanted to look for jobs in the US since part of my family lives in Texas and my boyfriend (23M) and I want to marry in the near future, he is a US citizen and I am not, I have no idea what steps I need to take in terms of legalities and papers, has anyone been thru this situation that can give me any advice or recommendations?

We been debating whether living in the US is the best option since im afraid my degree wont be taken seriously or it wont be valid per say since some friends of mine in the field have been struggling with finding jobs and they have completed their education in the US.

The only information I know is that I need a license to work as a psychologist but not much more, I already have an opportunity line up but I dont know any legal steps or the requirements to practice psychology properly, Any advice is greatly apreciated.

Advice/Career [USA] has anyone managed to get a remote job within or outside of their field?

If you have a BA or BS in psychology, have you managed to find a remote job in the field or one that has nothing to do with it? If so, how did you manage to get it and what is it?

Advice/Career [AUS] Experiences sourcing placement for Master of Professional Psychology

I’d love to hear from others how they found sourcing their own placement in a masters program that didn’t organise it for you? How did you go about it? Did you get a good placement in the end?

I’m finding for myself it looks more challenging than I thought, and many of the well known organisations are already full for next year due to connections with local university MCP programs

Advice/Career [HKG] How can I get into Educational psychology with a focus on teachers?

Teachers are obviously a huge stakeholder of educational psychology, aside from parents, children and the system. Teachers are the first line of help in any educational setting and are directly responsible for student education.

But I find it very difficult to focus on teachers for research even though there are plenty of problems teachers face that impact education.

For example, teachers face heavy workloads, excessive administrative work and behaviour problems from students, but most research (and programs and jobs) focuses on catering to children. The ed psychology programs in my city's universities all provide student-oriented areas of research and practice such as motivation or SEN support.

Most available research on teacher burnout and turnover provide solutions that don't seem very realistic, such as adding mindfulness to teacher's work. (Mindfulness is a great, evidence-based solution btw, but it doesn't solve the immense workload teachers have)

Side rant: everything is SEN. The government and the schools always sell that the education system is "SEN friendly". Teachers are afraid to discipline disruptive SEN kids and it's apparently "discriminatory" to call the social worker and pull them out of class for disruptive behaviour. There's so much attention towards SEN that I feel like we're looping right back to discrimination.

Aside from restrictions for the researcher, it's logistically difficult for research to involve teachers, especially when the outcome isn't desirable. Teachers won't participate in studies where the solution is "giving them more responsibilities". Schools don't want their teachers participating in a research that says "your teachers are overworked and would greatly benefit from hiring more people".

Is there any kind of way educational psychology will focus on practical solutions for teachers? If i get into ed psychology practice, is it possible to not do SEN and work on teachers instead?

Personal [MYS] Help a student in need (Details Below)

Hi everyone!

I’m an undergraduate student currently working on my thesis which explores the motivations for people to choose AI chatbots as an alternative to traditional psychotherapy.

I am currently looking for 10 participants to take part in an interview for this research.

Who can participate?

- If you are aged 18 or above

- If you have previously attended traditional therapy and have consciously chosen to use an AI chatbot as an alternative.

What you can expect:

- A one-on-one interview lasting approximately 45 to 60 minutes (conducted online via Zoom or Google Meets).

- All responses will be kept strictly anonymous in the final study and any resulting reports.

- The interview will be voice-recorded solely for transcription and analysis, and only with your explicit consent.

If you fit the criteria and are interested in sharing your experiences to help contribute to this research, please send me a direct message (DM) or comment below, and I will follow up with more details.

Thank you so much for your time! :)

Resource/Study [CAN] studying for a psych disorders class

in most of my classes, i use flashcards and active recall for studying. however, one of the classes i'm currently taking does an intensive review of various disorders, dsm diagnostic criteria, bio/social/psychosocial factors, treatments, etc. there's sm content and overlap that i feel like flashcards would not be effective in helping me. any advice for how to go about studying for this? thanks in advance!

Question [SWE] How do we determine who to learn from?

I’m studying to become a clinical psychologist and we’ve been doing some courses in science theory and research methodology and my professors and my text books have really been hammering in that there’s a lot of flaws in the current system.

The problem seems to be that scientific progress isn’t the only incentive at play. Researchers also need to make a living, secure funding, publish papers, and advance their careers. These incentives can encourage questionable research practices, even without outright fraud. Academic journals have their own incentives too and the pressure to publish novel, attention-grabbing findings can come at the expense of scientific rigour. Peer review was suppose to be a solution to a lot of the issues in how research is conducted but I’ve learnt that they are often also very poorly conducted because the journals have an incentive for quantity over quality.

A lot of people understand that we have to trust experts since it would be ridiculous to assume we know more than them. But a lot of people don’t know about the above mentioned issues which leaves the door open for bad actors to take advantage of that using perceived expertise. Especially since the experts who are easily found tend to be more interested in fame rather than scientific rigour. Jordan Peterson for example, he is by far the most famous psychologist alive but most psychologists would probably agree that he isn’t the best expert in the field to get your information from (I don’t know much about him or psychology so I’m not making my own claim here, just an example I’m aware of).

So this leads to my question: what’s the best bang-for-your-buck strategy for learning about a subject when you don’t have the time or interest to become an expert yourself?

I want to invest some time upfront in figuring out whom to trust so that I can rely on their judgement afterwards, rather than constantly having to evaluate every individual claim myself, which would generally be unrealistic as a clinical psychologist since it’s such a wide array of issues that we are asked to help with.

I’ve subconsciously developed this framework throughout my life:
I assess experts until I find 2-4 in a field that I deem trustworthy. Ideally they have some opposing opinions so I get a more nuanced total picture. When assessing I look for red flags like overly confident, chasing fame, money etc. And I look for green flags like intellectual honesty (like admitting when they don’t know the answer and acknowledging counter arguments).

How do you approach this? Do you have a better strategy or are there particular methods you use to identify trustworthy experts?

Question [USA] Fall 2027 social psychology advice

Hey y'all! I'm applying to 7 PhD programs for Fall 2027 and wanted to share a bit about my profile and get some advice trom people who have been through the process or are applying themselves. I'm 18 and have completed two bachelor's degrees: a B.S. in Health Science and a B.A. in Psychological Sciences. During my undergraduate studies, I've been involved in institutional initiatives, including a trauma-informed care group, where we conducted extensive research on how trauma affects students differently and explored ways to make our institution more trauma-informed. I've also been involved in social psychology research for almost a year now. I'd love to hear your thoughts on my profile, what I could strengthen in my applications, and any advice you might have for navigating the PhD application process. I'm happy to provide more details about my research interests and the programs I'm applying to.
Thanks in advance! :)
Schools applying to:
1. lowa State
