FAQs and useful resources - click here before you post :)

77 Upvotes

Hi guys, I thought I'd start a stickied thread with some useful links that I find myself including in lots of my comments here. I'll update this as I think of more stuff to add.

How do I become a doctor in the UK?

Useful written article here, useful timeline diagram here.

In short, you go to medical school, you complete your foundation training (6 x 4 month rotations working as a doctor in different specialties), you complete your specialty training, and you become a consultant.

Are my grades good enough for medical school? Which universities should I apply to?
I don't have good GCSE grades/a Chemistry A level, where can I apply?

This booklet contains all of the entry requirements for every medical course on offer in the UK. It is the entry requirements bible and I point people towards it multiple times per week.

Do I need to sit admissions tests?
How do I prepare for my admissions tests?

If you're applying for undergraduate medicine, you need to sit the UCAT and/or the BMAT. If you're applying for graduate entry medicine, you may also need to sit the GAMSAT.

Useful UCAT resources:
* r/UCAT
* Medify
* The Medic Portal
* official practice tests

Useful BMAT resources:
* r/BMATexam
* The Medic Portal

I scored ___ in my admissions test, where should I apply?

Useful guide about UCAT scores here, useful guide about BMAT scores here.

Opinions on my choices? :)

Just wanna see if I picked the right ones, also I’d really appreciate getting any interview tips/student life info from any medics that have attended these unis!

Soton, Glasgow, BSMS, UEA

I’m home UK, contextual (except Glasgow)
2020 B1
AAA predicted, A for an EPQ
I meet gcse requirements (none of these score them)

I’m going to start interview prep pretty soon, lmk what you think. Pretty nervous

Getting an FY1 placement as an international UK graduate

1 Upvotes

Ok so debating applying for UK medicine. I'd like to get on the competent authority pathway, which means I need to get an FY1 placement. If you graduate in the UK, how hard is it to get onto the Foundation programme as an international student? Thanks

Medicine as a second career?

2 Upvotes

Hi All,

I have always wanted to move into medicine, every 6 months or so does the bug catch me. I'm looking for advice from any other's that have done it as a second career.

I am 25 years old, and I said above, every 6 months or so, the feeling of doing it comes back. I working in financial services and are well paid so it would be a significant drop in disposable income.

My question if anyone else has done it, how did it go?

I would need to complete an access course - are these as well respected as A levels etc? AI seems to indicate no, especially if they are online.

If I did go ahead, could I work part time or is there any additional funding for adult leaners to help meet my liabilities? I understand its an intensive course.

Keen to understand other peoples experience whilst I ponder whether its all worth it.

Changing med choices after 15th October deadline

3 Upvotes

If I submit my medicine application on UCAS on the 15th, and want to switch one of them to another med choice a couple of days later, would I be able to? I know there is a 14 day window, but does this apply for medicine too?

Help with CSGU med

1 Upvotes

I’m applying as a resit (CCD, pred 2 a* 1 a) but I didn’t know there was a mitigating circumstances form to submit by the 10th of September which I missed because I didn’t even know if I wanted to go there. I tried calling and emailing a bunch but no response. Is it worth applying, I don’t want to risk it but also don’t want to be out of London pls help!

Im an intl student from Ontario Canada
UCAT 2160 b2
94% predicted avg (apparently A*AA equivalent or smth if that helps)

I've chosen St. Andrews (Canadian programme), leeds, and SGUL so far, is it good?

Idk whether I should pick a safer option (dundee, aston, belfast??) or a more risky one (leicester, bsms, uea, southampton) for my last one.
I'm also not sure what is most strategic, a lot of unis dont rlly weigh academics for intl students

PLEASE lmk if you guys have any insights or advice!!

Has anyone resat a levels twice (resat the resit) and succeeded?

3 Upvotes

I’ve scoured Reddit to see if anyone has. I’ve only found one person who did so, and then got 4A*s. Long story short, got CC in 2025 (pulled out of chem due to extenuating circumstances) then BBC in 2026 (as it stands, 2 marks away from an A, and my health issues progressively worsened affecting my exams + an exam centre mistake for the C subject). My gcse stats are 99999998 (yes I’ve fallen off I know). I’m not a med applicant (I do STEM tho), but I posted here because I can closely relate to some- hardworking individuals who have extenuating circumstances. In other subs, you may see people who have had to resit twice due to not revising etc and I just don’t relate.
