Question How do tickets work in busses, trams etc?

We are visiting for a week, and it is always a bit nervewracking figuring out a new city and their public transportation. Have I understood it correctly, if we buy a day pass in the PID app, and activate the ticket before stepping into our first transport, then we won't have to do anything unless someone comes to check our tickets. No scanning on entry or something like that?

Question On a hunt for earrings

• Upvotes

Hi guys:)

Trying my luck in multiple subreddits, hopefully someone will be able to help.

I'm trying to find this exact earring. It's gold (14k I believe), the red stone is Czech granat and the little white stones are probably zirconia.

The earrings were a gift from my Mom and were purchased in a jewelry store in Prague, I think in shopping centre Flora (OC Flora, Žižkov area).

They were a matching set with a necklace pendant as well.

Unfortunately I lost one of the earrings while travelling abroad and have no chance of getting it back.

I'm not from the Czech Republic so I'm unable to go on a hunt for it myself. I also haven't been able to find this exact pair on any online stores.

If anyone has any idea where to purchase these earrings or if there's a jewelry maker who would be able to make an exact replica, I would be incredibly grateful for any information. The earrings hold a huge sentimental value for me, and I really hope I can wear them again someday.

Question Any parents? Where should I post for offered activities?

I am a music and English teacher, and I posted on some Facebook groups that I am opening an international D&D activity for kids (and all ages). I got some responses, but not enough to open the group. Looking for other places to put ads on, or if you have specific FB groups I could post in :)

Thank you!

Student Life i finally said to je všechno to the cashier and we both started laughing

ok this is probably really small and silly but i need to tell someone lol

im an erasmus student from turkey. there is a small bonveno next to my dorm and i go there almost every day, usually just for one thing. water, or a drink when i get food from outside.

couple days ago i went in to buy only a water. i always say dobrý den when i walk in so i did, then at the register i asked “mluvíte anglicky?” and she just shook her head. ok fine, i showed her the bottle and my apple pay and she said something, i think it was like “only this or anything else?” but tbh i have no idea, i panicked and my brain just stopped. we figured it out somehow, i paid, said děkuji na shledanou and left.

after that i felt really bad. like i put her in a awkward situation for no reason. so i went home and learned how to say “that’s all” -> to je všechno. (practiced it in my room way too many times not gonna lie)

today after school i got my food and went in for a coke zero. same lady was there. the moment i walked in i saw her and said “DOBRÝ DEEEN” way too excited, and she said it back exactly the same way. i took my coke, went to the register and said “to je všechno” with full confidence. she looked at me so sweetly and smiled and we both just started laughing. then she asked “kartou?” and i said “ano, kartou prosíííím” and we laughed again lol. then děkuji, na shledanouuuu and i left.

i know this sounds like nothing but it was one of the best moments i had in my life. im 1500 km away from my family and the people i love, and small things like this really make the loneliness go away. so i just wanted to share it with you guys.

and to the lady at bonveno, if you somehow see this (you wont), thank you, you made my day :)

Question Rodinné právo Praha – doporučení na dobrého advokáta?

No matter how much I travel (and I feel fortunate and privileged that my work entails a fair amount of it), nothing will rival the charm and bohemia of Prague. Unlike of Europe there’s a restlessness to the city; a streak of rebellion, that no other European capital can rival. Loved every nook and cranny and I’m very sure I’ll see it again.

Other A Czech stranger showed me incredible kindness during my trip

Hello everyone, I hope you're all having a nice day!

I just got back home to Lebanon after my trip, and there's one person i met on my way to Prague who I really need to write this post about.

I was travelling from Austria to Prague and after my train from Linz to Ceské Budejovice got delayed i ended up waiting for 2 hours alone in a foreign country and honestly was pretty stressed about the whole ordeal.

That's when I met an old Czech man called Luděk. He was incredibly cheerful and i really believe that the smile never left his face. He helped with directing me to the correct platform and train and turns out he was also going on the same train as me to Prague.

On the train to Ceské Budejovice, we sat apart. At some point he came over and struck a convo with me asking me where I'm from. I told him I was Lebanese, and we had a small conversation about where I was traveling, why I was visiting czechia, and my trip in general.

When we arrived at České Budějovice, he came over to me and said, basically, “Let’s go.” I had a large suitcase and a smaller carry-on, and this 68 year old man who, btw, looked about 50 insisted on carrying one of my bags for me.

I argued with him about it because there was absolutely no way I was going to make a 68 yo man carry my luggage. He didn't care. He kept insisting until eventually he just took my carry-on and helped me with it through the station.

When he came back, he initially thought I had left. He actually seemed surprised when he realized I had stayed there waiting for him. We then boarded the train to Prague and this time sat facing eachother. For pretty much the entire journey, we talked. We talked about our lives, our pasts, where we were in life now, traveling, and all kinds of things. He gave me a ton of advice about Prague and gave me recommendations (and was pretty surprised that i knew Jan Zizka). And his kidness didn't stop when the train arrived.

Once we reached Prague, he insisted on coming with me to make sure I bought the correct public transport ticket. He explained how the transport system worked and gave me advice about being careful with pickpockets, tourist scams, and other things I should watch out for.

And then he said something that genuinely stayed with me:

“I feel like you're my son, and I need to tell you these things.”

That was incredibly heartwarming to hear from someone who had been a complete stranger only a few hours earlier. Eventually, we went down to the metro together. He was heading toward Muzeum while I needed to go toward Vyšehrad, so that was where we had to part ways. Before we separated, he shook my hand, told me to enjoy Prague to the maximum and said that I was going to love it there. We both said that hopefully, somehow, we'd see each other again one day.

Unfortunately, I was stupid enough not to ask for his phone number or even his last name. I had barely slept the night before and my brain honestly wasn't functioning properly, but I still felt really guilty afterward when I realized I had no way of contacting him again, and to thank him.

So, to the czech man named Luděk, who helped a random stranger:

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

You were one of the people who made my first trip to Czechia something I'll never forget.

I really hope our paths cross again someday.

Thanks everyone!

Question Tattoo cover up - recommendations for artists in Prague?

I’m coming to Prague in a few weeks and I’m looking to get the tattoo on my arm fixed/covered up/semi covered up. I’ve gotten a tattoo in Prague before and the artist was amazing and really knew her stuff and was telling me all about the tattoo scene there. Unfortunately she moved away and I can’t get in touch with her anymore.
So I’m wondering if anyone has recommendations or experiences to share for tattoo artists in Prague?
Basically my tattoo is a large line drawing of a woman and child so shouldn’t be a massive problem to do a nice cover up on. Half of it is fine and the other half is terrible lol. So I’d like to get either the terrible half covered up (the child) or the whole thing.
I would really appreciate anything anyone can share! Thanks so much.

Question Alternative nightlife?!

Hey, I’m visiting Prague soon with two friends and we would love to know about some alternative nightlife there! Any nightclubs or bars that are not so mainstream? Where they play acid or dnb or techno or electro? With a more political activist atmosphere? Let me know!! I’m more than interested to hear about the cool places!:))

Question Do I really need to reach C1 in Czech to build a social life in Prague?

I'm a guy 28m living in Prague, and I've been learning Czech for about two years through private lessons and evening courses at Charles University. I've reached around B1, but lately, I'm starting to feel quite discouraged.

I work full-time, so finding enough time to study is already challenging. I understand that learning a language takes time, and I'm willing to put in the effort. However, I feel like my Czech still isn't good enough to actually use it in everyday life.

For example, whenever I make even a small mistake or don't fully understand something in a shop or pharmacy, people immediately switch from Czech to English. I understand that they're probably just trying to make communication easier, but it also means I lose another opportunity to practise.

The bigger problem is that I don't really have anyone to speak Czech with outside of my lessons. I want to make Czech friends, develop a social circle, and eventually be able to have meaningful conversations without constantly struggling to find the right words.

Sometimes, it feels like I need to reach C1 before I can do any of that. But reaching C1 while working full-time could take years, and the thought of waiting that long just to feel comfortable socialising is pretty demotivating.

I know that B1 isn't a bad level after two years of studying alongside a full-time job, but it feels as though there's a huge gap between knowing the language in a classroom and actually being able to use it naturally.

Lastly, socialising with other expats can be quite difficult because people often live here for a few years and then move back to their home countries. It makes it harder to build lasting friendships and a stable social circle.

Question Birthday bar/restaurant for 20 people?

Hello!

My birthday is in the next couple of weeks and I will have around 20 people, and I would like to hear your recommendation when it comes to places where to celebrate it.

The previous years, I have always done it in L'Osteria, but I'm tired of it, so I'd like to celebrate it in a different place. I dont mind what kind of cusine is, I am open to everything.

Thank you so much in advance!

Kind regards,

Ana.
