[RATE] False Starts Mini Rate
This is the minirate that was given away as a perk for our Charity Drive benefitting Casa Marianella (and you can still donate to support them today, wink!)! Without further ado, let’s get to the rate!
WHAT IS A FALSE START?
You might have seen a very gorgeous gorgeous discussion post a few days ago, talking about when for some reason, initial singles are released but don’t end up kickstarting an era even when they’re trying. Those songs usually end up delegated to a deluxe release, or just end up as a random loose song that goes nowhere for the fans to enjoy. This rate chooses to uplift all those releases, find if they were unfairly treated and should have actually been pushed further, or if they were rightfully rejected and ignored!. That’s what your scores are for!
IF YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS
BALLOT / PASTEBIN / SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / TIDAL / DUE NOV. 2ND
THE TRACKS
- Alicia Keys - In Common
- Ariana Grande - Focus
- Britney Spears, Iggy Azalea - Pretty Girls
- Camila Cabello - Crying in the Club
- Carly Rae Jepsen - Let's Be Friends
- Charlie Puth - Girlfriend
- Charli xcx (feat. Lil Yatchy) - After the Afterparty
- Chlöe - Have Mercy
- Conan Gray - Telepath
- Demi Lovato - I Love Me
- Gwen Stefani - Baby Don't Lie
- Iggy Azalea - Mo Bounce
- Jesy Nelson (feat. Nicki Minaj) - Boyz
- Khalid - Skyline
- Kim Petras - Future Starts Now
- Lil Nas X - J CHRIST
- Lizzo (feat. Cardi B) - Rumors
- Miley Cyrus - Slide Away
- Normani (feat. 6LACK) - Waves

- The Weeknd - Dancing in the Flames
- Usher - Good Kisser
- will.i.am, Mick Jagger, Jennifer Lopez - T.H.E (The Hardest Ever)
BORING STUFF
If this is the start of your rating era, welcome! Here’s everything you need to know!
- Rates explained by video: 30 second rundown - 6 minute guide
- Listen to every song listed and assign each of them a score from 1 to 10. Decimals are allowed, but refrain from going past one decimal place - 7.5 is fine, 7.75 is not!
- You may give ONE song a 0 and ONE song an 11. These should be reserved for your favourite track and least favourite track! You do not have to give these scores.
- Rate all songs! If you skip any, your ballot won’t be counted (I will let you know if you do so you can remedy that).
- I highly recommend that you add a comment to your song ratings! It makes everything a lot more fun during the reveal, plus if your comment is good enough you might even be lucky and get featured on a banner in the reveal thread!
- To leave a comment, add a space after the score and then type to your heart’s desire, like this:
- Ariana Grande - Focus: 7 fuckazombie
- Please use the pre-prepared link to submit your scores! Note that if you're trying to access on a mobile device or on the new reddit layout it may not work - as such, I made it so the link will take you to old.reddit.com, and you should use a computer to send in your scores if possible! If you still run into issues, a pastebin with the submission form is at the bottom of this post and may be copy/pasted into a DM too!
- If you want to change any scores or comments after you’ve already submitted, just message me, the host (u/CrimsonROSET) and I’ll be happy to help! You can also reach me on the Popheads Discord (corona), so if you have Discord, pop into the #rates channel, there's a lot of fun conversation over there!
TL;DR
SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / TIDAL
The rate will be due Monday, November 2nd and reveal that weekend, November 7th-8th!
And if you want to keep the rating streak going, do one of our other open rates!

[DISCUSSION] Pop stars who you think were in the right place at the right time?
I was listening to a podcast talk about Jessica Simpson recently and one of the hosts made a comment about feeling bad for Jessica Simpson and how you can see how the rapid rise of Britney Spears basically forced her to become a dance pop star which is something she was clearly not into.
this lead the cohost to say, with no malice or sarcasm, “what was Jessica Simpson going to do if she was not a Britney clone.”
the host expanded on that thought by pointing out that while Jessica had a good singing voice it’s not like she had some artistic voixce longing to break free.
contrast Jessica to Robyn. dispit’s debuting first Robyn could have easily become Britney runoff but Robyn refused and instead left the major labels to make her own artist statements. I’m not going to act like Robyn’s music is Yoko Ono but it is clearly her own and she have proven herself as an artist with something to say on her own.
even in the 00’s if Jessica Simpson had gone indie like…what would she have said? What would she have done?
I have also heard people say this about Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake. Every time over the past fifteen years they have said “this is my own artistic statement“, they have flopped on the face. Because they do not have anything to say without a superstar producer and label guiding them.
