The hate for anime is crazy in the thread. It’s an amazing medium of art. Not every show is PG but there are really really good gems and amazing storytelling in anime. Some anime is considered some of the best media of all time (example: attack on titan)
Just want to add, women watch and love anime too!!! Stop thinking anime is only for men and that men only watch anime. Someone like Inde definitely could be into anime!!! Liking and watching anime is not being poser 🤦🏻♀️

u/ankhes 10h ago
This. I’m kinda shocked because the vibe I’m getting in this thread is exactly the same as when I was back in high school and anime was seen as this ‘cringe’ thing that only weirdos were into and if you enjoyed it you had to hide it.
In reality anime is just a medium. There are hundreds of anime out there with beautiful stories and absolutely stunning animation. There are anime that have made me cry because of how emotionally rich their writing is. There are anime that made me gasp with delight at how gorgeously animated some scenes are. Not everything out there is gooner slop.

This was one of my first anime series and opened up a new world for me. I'd mostly only seen studio ghibli films before, and watched the english dubs of pokemon or sailor moon when I was too young to realize they were animes.
But Violet Evergarden had a vice grip on me and I remember crying so hard at some scenes and being so invested in her journey. Now I throw in animes, manhwas, and donghuas into my asian drama cycles because I'm always amazed at how much emotions the characters and plots bring despite not having IRL human expressions.

They generally do a great job of picking works that actually mean something and then have world class artists to put it together

Anime seems to live in this weird place where so many people seem to think it's a genre of it's own, which is such nonsense.
It's like if someone watched Paranormal Activity, and hated it because it was too scary, then someone asking if they'd like to watch lord of the rings and they respond with "oh, no, I don't like movies".

I'm an editor and I watch anime to remind myself of how to move a story and how to let big plot events happen all the time. I understand her POV completely here and I think it's smart. Anime-style plotting rarely translates perfectly to other mediums, but it does remind you of another way to plot and pace, and it reminds you to be imaginative and bold.

Yeah, people who still think anime as the same as cartoons and even cartoons are for adults too. They're just ignorant if they knew the amount of inspiration that filmmakers took from anime like Perfect Blue for example.
Also here in Latinoamérica women from even older generations grew up with anime, my mom with Candy Candy and Heidi, I grew up with Sailor Moon, Card Capture Sakura, DBZ, Inuyasha and so many more.

I think it’s an age thing older generations don’t watch it at all and have a negative perception of it. I do think there’s a thing where quite a lot of anime people don’t watch much else outside that it feels like and in my experience think that’s part of it too.

This comment section is pissing me tf off. Getting major flashbacks to that time of my life when I used to be into football and would get hated on by both guys and girls for being a faker and a poser. Guys who would bombard me with questions to prove my knowledge and expertise. Girls who would accuse me of being pick me and attention seeking. Just no way of winning. The only acceptable way is to be a stereotypical girl, be into girly things and to fit yourself into that comfortable, familiar box that we're all assigned at birth because of what we have between our legs.
How are we still stuck in this backwards, narrow minded high school mentality. On a seemingly progressive popculture forum of all places.

There were a couple interviews of her posted on these subs where she said she is into multiple hobbies that are associated with men, like pool, games, cars, and now anime.

That’s exactly why. She’s pretty and likes typical nerdy things. Some other women (generally the ones who also enjoy the same things) hate this, and some men do as well. But it’s fine when a male celebrity enjoys these things, it even makes him more relatable! 🙄
12

•
u/Melonary (Select to edit this flair) 1h ago
Ngl it's not usually the women who actually like this stuff being weird and sexist about it ime. There are some adult women who seriously seem to think having hobbies and interests that aren't the ones they have or ones that are considered more feminine are "immature" or childish, because only men can have actual interests of course (this is also kind of insulting to 'feminine' hobbies and interests obviously, because it devalues the genuine interest and dedication people have and makes it just a gender-based assumption).
And since men are allowed to be childish, even if with eye-roll, whoops, guess who gets the judgement?

Some of the best animated films in the world have been anime. Besides Miyazaki, there’s also Satoshi Kon, and other amazing film makers.
Some series have also been wildly inventive and provocative. The space operatic Gankuutsuo (The Count of Monte Cristo) is amazing, as is Monster. Hell, even the highly highly popular series like Inuyasha and Naruto also had significant moments of deep and emotive storytelling and character development, often more than what I encountered in popular serialised western animation
2
u/itsyaboiReginald 3h ago
Japanese storytelling continues to baffle me. I love the stories but the structure and plot points still always seem so unique to me like I can never understand where the story and plot comes from, as opposed to western storytelling where I always have a point of reference for what sort of story is being told.
•
u/IWouldLikeAName 2h ago
Can see how it's possibly jarring. A lot of the stuff shonen anime(usually the action ones) are based off of their religious and cultural histories for the powers and such and transferlations almost never work perfectly because of how different the languages are.
You might like the more slice of life type stuff that is more about the characters and relationships so it's a more general frame of reference since even though culturally we're pretty different a lot of our experiences and feelings aren't all that different.

Y’all gotta chill. She’s 25, so yes, she is still learning very basic things about story telling. I don’t really have an opinion on her at all, I liked obsession but know nothing about her outside of seeing her in that role.
This being said - cannot get into anime because it seems like every time my friends recommend me one it’s pretty good for the most part except for they all seem to contain comic relief character trope that I dub “good ole Mr pedophile” whose only trait is that he actively sexualizes blatant depictions of minors in a way that is clearly is intended to be played for laughs except there is literally no joke behind it, even if you try to dissect it from a “dark humor” perspective (Blegh). Also somehow this character is always tertiary but also seems to be the only character that shows up in every episode even if it’s just a brief appearance.

24
u/No_Equivalent8902 11h ago
+++ I think its also Hollywood wanting their actors to be more than actors,to be directors, producers etc you end up with takes similar to this.Let actors just be actors.
Edit: be models on red carpets + stylist.
4
u/mio26 10h ago
Not necessary. It depends how someone gets into film making. There is quite a lot of famous actors who are not into filmmaking or even into cinematography. Because they don't have to. Actor needs to show up on the set and rest work does crew. Actually much more initiative have actors in theatre than in films because they are alone on the stage while director can totally cut your work from film or change it direction. Of course many people are passionate but people who starts with child acting (parents decision), models or someone who was street cast can not care about films at least at the beginning.

I think after watching the clip and reading the comments, two things can be true.
People ARE quick to label her as a pick-me and are showing their internalized misogyny under the guise of feminism and too quick to label women with stereotypical male interests as pick-mes.
AND
Inde did not really say anything insightful here at all. She introduced studying anime as if she had an insight specific to anime to share, but instead shared an observation about general storytelling that so, so, many movies and TV shows employ today (playing with timelines). Which, every movie that ever had a flashback or multiple timelines or a monologue by a dead person (Memento, West World, Gone girl, even children’s media etc etc ) would use
she presented a pretty commonplace narrative device as though studying anime had revealed something particularly insightful about storytelling. A monologue gaining new significance after a character’s death is a technique used across virtually every narrative medium, including novels, short stories, etc
She didn’t answer the question of what does anime in particular do with timelines that’s distinctive, but presented it as if anime uniquely did that. It would be like saying “thats why I study Tarantino films to understand storytelling. Sometimes a character says something, and then something happens later that makes what they said more meaningful. This is why Tarantino is such a fascinating director.” Like…you didn’t need Tarantino to teach you all that!
So people are now using her lack of insight and accusing her of introducing anime without needing to and saying she did that purposely to be a pick-me. To be fair, a man likely 100% wouldn’t be as picked apart for such a comment.
40
u/LaMelonBallz 9h ago edited 9h ago
Couldn't you say that about any storytelling facet of any piece of art ever created?
She didn't say it did something entirely unique. She said she looked at what she was already watching, and tried to figure out what made her like it more than another specific series, and that happened to be that it played with timelines and the other show didn't, and the impact that had on the story.
She's not even comparing it to other mediums. If we follow your critique, then saying that any piece of media does something cool with its storytelling mechanism would be pointless, because so does something else.
You're hearing a comparison between anime and western TV/movies that I don't think is actually mentioned anywhere in the clip. She just said she studied what she watched and she watched anime.
Based on your logic the response to you would be "Why did you even mention Memento, West World, etc., completely unnecessary information. We already know other movies and shows have done that. That's not unique to any of those pieces of art. What are you trying to signal?"
→ More replies (4)6
u/millennialpink_03 9h ago edited 8h ago
Yes, you brought up a good point and after I watched it again, i agree with you too that it’s not that deep, and she just chose anime in the moment because she likes anime and she didnt explicitly say “anime does this better than other mediums.” Also I wasn’t specifically trying to bring to attention “western” media specifically to contrast (I am also not from the west, im East Asian). I could have just said any other storytelling medium (let’s say Rashomon as a non-linear Japanese film to mix things up lol).
I guess I was just saying she used a specific/more niche medium to illustrate a commonplace concept when I expected a commonplace medium to illustrate a common place concept. Like, I personally wouldn’t say “Pachelbel uses the I–V–vi–IV progression better than Bach” when it’s all over contemporary pop music too - I would have just referred to music in general using the same chords because certain progressions are easier on the ears universally But I guess that’s just my interpretation of singling out a particular example.
nd not necessarily something I should project on her.29
u/pincushion_cactus 9h ago
She introduced studying anime as if she had an insight specific to anime to share, but instead shared an observation about general storytelling that so, so, many movies and TV shows employ today

I respect anime so much because i have seen truly compelling stories and characters that the West has never been able to reproduce nor would dare to, even if they could.

I mean, she isn't saying that all animes have special storytelling. I don't think her point was to prop up and celebrate anime in general. She just named anime as her own way through which she learned more about storytelling and gave a specific example from that genre through which she learned more about it. Is that really so weird? I know I learned a whole bunch about filmmaking, writing and storytelling through my favourite movies and tv shows when I was younger. Hell, I still do.
I dunno, I feel like it's pretty clear what she was trying to say if you watch the video.
17
u/MythicSea 11h ago edited 10h ago
Depends what you're watching. Ghost inthe Shell, Fullmetal, Hunter, Berserk, Akira, etc.
Stuff like One Piece and Naruto has its moments, but aren't as concise or consistent.
Mind you, it is a much more relaxed medium for artists so there is a lot of personal stuff tied to it that may not be caught.
Vagabond is one where I see a lot of people take it or leave it. I'm a big proponent of its art and storytelling. The way characters involve themselves, collide, and potentially have to change and move past their limits is intruiging. The way the mountain top peak is shown to us, yet also easily cast aside as perfection can never be attained explains so much so well. To not change is to stall your own limits.
Others will say it lacks depth, is slow, and doesn't tell a good story. Simply not enjoying the process or nuances. A narrow perspective imo.
9
u/Excellent_Bend8782 10h ago
But then there's also Frieren, Apothecary Diaries, reincarnated as a slime, Overlord, Solo Levelling, etc that shows how diverse anime can truly be

u/MythicSea 10h ago
Lmfao PLEASE. Don't get me started with Quintessential quintuple fuckmycousin or 40 year old incel gets new lease on life to form a harem with monstergirls.

What makes one anime popular and compelling and another anime boring and unpopular when they all follow a similar formula? If you were to write an anime, how would you make a popular/successful one?
While the formula is essentially the same, what's hard is finding the combination elements that make a story compelling.

It's just assinine to say you're studying storytelling watching JJK. I enjoy aspects of JJK... but storytelling is not it's strong suit. Read a fucking Paddy Chayefsky script, or you know a Pynchon novel, or I don't know -- something that tests the boundaries of storytelling.. not fucking JJK. Are you kidding? If a guy told me this I'd be saying the same shit.

I’m a big anime fan but also a big fan of media in general, I love and appreciate ALL mediums, haven’t seen obsession yet but all the discourse around her is making me like her, she seemingly blew up from nowhere on a movie that has something to say about both men and women as well as their dynamics, so she was already starting at a place where she was gonna get some unwanted hate, and on top of that she’s into nerdy, non “transitional” (blehh) for women things and has gotten a big role shortly after obsessions, the discourse around her truly shows how miserable and full of hate a lot of people are, to her because she’s a woman and into this kind of stuff etc as well as becoming successful so quickly, and also shows that even though anime is now mainstream it’s still super divisive because people suck, they are ignorant and miserable. Anyone shitting on anime isn’t truly a fan of art and expression.

Can women do anything without being accused of performing for men

The trick to accuse any women who aren’t interested in stereotypically “girly” things or are interested in stereotypically “guy” things of being “pick me”s so you can still be misogynistic, enforce gender roles, and police women’s self-expression, but now under the guise of feminism (-:

A bit of a dismissive statement. At the end of the day it’s just a (visual) medium like any other media.
It’s like saying “I’ll never understand why people put music/books/films on such a high pedestal”

All this talk about anime no one has ever mentioned Jojo‘s bizarre adventure? especially their most recent run right now on Netflix the steel ball run? Now that’s great anime particularly of the more adult kind.

i like it even more than short story because of its pacing and titanic characterization/design.

She's into screenwriting? That's fucking dope and juggling that with being a great actress is not easy as both take insane time and commitment. I hope she kills it as Rogue and keeps getting more opportunities.
