Such an iconic duo, warms my heart seeing them together again. Their chemistry really is unmatched.

"You're wondering... what is a place like me doing in a girl like this?"

u/riegspsych325 Ballard! Don’t let them put their tops back on! 12h ago

goddamn, was Evelyn such a lovingly charming character (as was everyone, really). She was a great spin on the damsel-in-distress; she knew she was out of her depth in certain instances but still tried to get through it. Like her grabbing the shotgun and screaming out of fear before firing off a shot

And too many such characters are written as bitterly defensive over their own profession. But Evie isn’t, she loves her work and isn’t ashamed of it. “I am proud to be a librarian!” and that goddamn smile, love it every time

Weisz’s best role and I will die on this hill

u/ScipioCoriolanus 11h ago edited 5h ago

Well said.

I love her passion and enthusiasm when it comes to anything related to her field.

"Take that, Bembridge scholars!"

82

u/riegspsych325 Ballard! Don’t let them put their tops back on! 11h ago

exactly, and it helped she wasn’t written as a Mary Sue character. Evie was a klutz, admitted to not having field experience, and so on but she is competent. I like it when movies aren’t afraid to show their protagonists as imperfect as they power through trial and error or make them have an experience arc

9

u/Seductive_Sirenn_ 9h ago

Cinema is officially saved. Do not wake me from this dream

5

u/Achaewa 5h ago

"Mary Sues" – god I hate what that term has become – can be clumsy and have faults, it just all has to be some kind of positive for them and when characters call them out on it, it's they who are somehow in the wrong.

"I... AM A LIBRARIAN!" passes out

138

u/New-Alps7217 10h ago edited 9h ago

Yes, and she was unapologetically feminine. I grew really tired of "strong women" that took on predominantly male characteristics, because that's the only way they could be strong characters

52

u/Kimono-Ash-Armor Mom, I am a rich man💰 10h ago

Yep, same with Margaery Tyrell in Game of Thrones!

31

u/riegspsych325 Ballard! Don’t let them put their tops back on! 10h ago

Ellen Ripley may be the only one off the top
of my head that pulls that off anyway

39

u/Zebidee 7h ago

Ripley is unique in that she's a female lead without a love interest.

I can't think of another film where a leading woman hasn't had a love scene written in.

Presumably because the character was originality written as male.

This is part of why I love Kim Possible.

24

u/bhaskarville 11h ago

This and her role in Constantine.

19

u/Kujaichi 5h ago

The Mummy was one of my favourite movies growing up (still is, honestly).

I always wanted to become an archeologist, studied Egyptology (amount others) in university and everything.

Welp, that didn't work out, but I am a librarian now, so there's that!

too many such characters are written as bitterly defensive over their own profession

Yes omg, I absolutely hate this in media where characters are a scientist or some intellectual role and the film depicts it as lesser.

13

u/ghost_of_zelda_sayre 7h ago

Part of what makes Evie such a great character is her enthusiasm. It’s infectious, both to Rick and the audience.

9

u/Few-Road6238 5h ago

Yeah like I look at her and I’m like no wonder why Rick loves her and he’s the luckiest guy ever

7

u/ghost_of_zelda_sayre 4h ago

Both have a very nice awareness of self confidence, self awareness, and strength, but not too much of any. Rick is great cause he’s a man of action and adventure, he’s a treasure hunter, but he’s not an idiot either.

8

u/madeyoulurk 4h ago

Evelyn was my bisexual awakening!!

10

Patricia Velasquez in Anck-su-Namun getup was the start of mine (straight piece of white bread here). I was around 8 or 9 when I rented the movie and when she popped on screen, I said “that’s it, I get it now”

100%,her replacement in the 3rd Mummy movie just didn't have the chemistry with Fraser that Weisz did among other things wrong with that movie, nothing but love for Jet Li though.

55

u/s1ugg0 12h ago

I genuinely hope they are having a blast making this movie.

35

u/Majestic_Act 11h ago

Yup, one photo but you can see they will have their old chemistry just by her smile

I really hope there’s at least one scene of him exasperatedly telling her they are supposed to be retired and her saying a librarian never retires.

177

u/No_Kangaroo_9826 famous singer AND DEMOCRAT 13h ago

Meanwhile Johnathan is in the background drinking and saying he's definitely retired and not going anywhere.

Cut to them all boarding a train with him dragging his suitcase and definitely being dramatic about it

You get it

9

u/demandred_zero 10h ago

Is Jonathan in it? He better be.

27

u/TheZardoz 10h ago

I do love an exasperated Brendan Fraser performance. My favorite line in anything he’s ever done is him screaming about his coffee on the Mummy roller coaster.

9

u/cantantantelope 9h ago

We can presume they have been fighting at least one supernatural drama per decade. The man is tired.

Rachel Weisz returning after being recast in the third Mummy is the real life version of the 22 Jump Street end credits joke. Where they show clips from future instalments and replace Jonah Hill with Seth Rogen for one due to contract disputes they resolve before the next one

They should have paid her what she deserved and not fumbled her last time

206

u/Comic_Book_Reader Ezekiel Sims was in the Amazon with my mom researching spiders. 12h ago

They've confirmed that they're just ignoring the third one... which I think people already did in the first place. (Idk, haven't watched them, just know the third one is apparently a bastard child.)

170

u/Lachtaube 12h ago

What third one? This franchise has only two films and they're filming the third one right now.

46

u/Paulthefith 8h ago

Then why are we naming it 4?

Because it’s 4 the people!

The mummy 3 - 4 the people! In cinemas this year!

I've never heard anything about it being a pay dispute. I've always heard she didn't like the script, especially not enough to speed up her time off after giving birth

7

u/skyturnedred 11h ago

From what I've understood it was about not wanting to play the mother of an adult (their kid is 21 in the movie).

→ More replies (3)

25

u/Minimum_Post 7h ago

It wasnt a money dispute, Rachel Weisz dropped out herself. Her agent called and told director Rob Cohen she wasn't comfortable with her character being the mother of a 21 year old in that movie when she herself was only 37.

16

u/riegspsych325 Ballard! Don’t let them put their tops back on! 12h ago

them calling the upcoming 3rd movie “24th Jump Street” is already one of the best jokes in the franchise

Edit to add: Brendan Fraser is also responsible for my taste in men. George of the Jungle all day everyday.

He looks so much healthier! Is what he is wearing his character's outfit? Looks kind of modern, though I guess the new movie will take place in the 40s or 50s?

99

u/Possiblyreef 12h ago

The original mummy from the 90s was set in the 20's/30's. Would make sense for character aging if it was set either marginally before WW2 or after it had settled down a bit mid 50's.

47

u/skyturnedred 11h ago

I hope it goes full-on WW2 just so I can see Rick O'Connell kick some nazi ass.

Same!!! For him to recapture this role is wonderful!!

I know that characters would be the same. That is the mind fuck of getting older. Passions and drive often remain! 🥰

29

u/Own-Importance5459 I’ve grown quite unfond of you 12h ago

I think what happened here is what exactly with Hayden Christensen, he must have went to a convention and saw what this role meant to alot of people in turn he saw what it meant to him and was inspired to go back and I love that for him after what he's been through.

5

u/Dommichu yeah... no... 11h ago

Great example!!! I think he has definitely matured into the role and he’s also been given some wonderful stuff with it now because of it.

I hope it’s the same with this film. I was super eh about some of the older Indie stuff Harrison Ford was given. It’s like they forgot total aspects of the character. :/

The Mummy is the movie that made me want to be an actor. It also got me into directing and writing.

Now a days I just write but The Mummy was what got me into it. My mom still has the first 30 page book I wrote when I was nine. It was about Donkey Kong fighting Sonic.

I stil watch The Mummy and The Mummy returns about three times a year. Love those movies. Hope this is good

15

u/s1ugg0 12h ago

You should write more swashbuckling adventure stories then. The world definitely could use some fun these days.

6

u/TheSwampThing1990 12h ago

I have written a few. One of the stories I am most proud of was a sci-fi version of the mummy.

It was inspired by my love of Farscape and The Mummy. It was called, "The Black."

It’s so nice to see a screen couple where the woman isn’t at least 10 years younger then the man.

1.1k

u/AdhesivenessFar5588 13h ago edited 13h ago

I mean, she looks great, but she's clearly got a good amount of filler and botox going on. Brendan looks like he hasn't had anything done other than the hair transplants. I'm not trying to be a hater, I just don't want people to look at this and think this is what aging actually looks like without intervention .

440

u/ickysock Kelly Clarkson put me in danger 13h ago

Brendan has a wig on. it does look great on him though, if he decided to make it permanent I don't think anyone would blame him for getting 'cosmetic surgery'.

143

u/AdhesivenessFar5588 13h ago

This is definitely a wig, but he's also had at least two hair transplants. I believe this to be a top piece blended into his real hair on the sides.

18

u/Long_Reindeer3702 7h ago

I am so bad at recognizing wigs. I literally spent 5 years with someone and had no idea. Please, help me. How do I spot them so I don't say things like "your hair looks nice today did you get it cut recently" and look stupid?  Ugh, I cringe so hard at it.

55

u/AdhesivenessFar5588 12h ago

He absolutely has had hair transplants. You can look it up, as there's plenty of photo evidence. Sometimes you need several for them to take. My guess is he gave up and moved to using hair systems instead.

27

u/crockofpot 7h ago

The best part of the Mummy 3 was this part of Roger Ebert's review of it.

Moviegoers who knowingly buy a ticket for “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” are going to get exactly what they expect: There is a mummy, a tomb, a dragon and an emperor.

5

u/Mia-Wal-22-89 7h ago

The opposite of the Holy Roman Empire.

21

u/Rothkette 11h ago

There is no mummy 3 what are you talking about they re filming mummy 3 right now

15

u/Lucky_Locks 12h ago

Number of things. Quick search revealed script dissatisfaction, family commitments (she just had a newborn and didn't want to leave them to be in China for filming), and then scheduling conflict with another film that was probably closer to home.

16

u/Actual-Wave-1959 12h ago

It's not cannon, let's say it happened in a different universe

5

u/The_FireFALL 5h ago

The inuniverse reasoning was that Weisz was the book version that Evie wrote of herself and the first two mummy films were her recounts of them. 4th film could just do it straight back and have Evie say the 3rd film was her book account of it.

It's Brendan Fraser. And it's The Mummy. It'll be good. Maybe not spectacular, but good and enjoyable. The Mummy is one of those cozy comfy movies that you can casually rewatch every couple of years or even months and it's always still a cool watchable, enjoyable movie.

Original Total Recall has that kind of vibe too. Or Journey to the Center of the Earth, also with Brendan Fraiser. Or Bedazzled. It's so cheesy and corny it's really cool. And I always laugh so hard when Brendan's character is granted a wish to be rich and wakes up as a drug lord. That part is so fucking funny him speaking spanish and russian. XD

Honestly its just nice to see Brendan back and smiling.

He had such bad stuff happen to him, he really deserves to be back in a healthy place.

I’m so happy he grew his hair out! Looks fab. Have loved this movie for 20 years. So many hot people being hot in it.

I don't know why hairpieces and wigs were the butt of so many jokes I saw as a kid-- hair is hair and who cares, especially if they look that good!

Idgaf if this movie has the worst reviews in the history of cinema, I will watch it. Seeing these two together again is going to be a treat.

Hollywood spent billions trying to find the next iconic on-screen duo when all they ever needed to do was put Brendan and Rachel back in a room together.

u/Absotootely 12h ago

Oh, they are looking fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine.

5

u/PaddlefootCanada 12h ago

Great couple, great chemistry. And I also like it that neither of them look like they've done crazy amounts of plastic surgery.
