Following her abrupt resignation as U.S. Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle is returning to the United States amid mounting tensions with Trump. Administration officials reportedly scrambled to manage her departure after mounting allegations of professional misconduct during her diplomatic assignment.

Guilfoyle’s tenure faced scrutiny following multiple reports of policy violations and ethical breaches. According to investigations, she allegedly used official diplomatic functions to lobby on behalf of a private Greek company and granted its representatives exclusive access to senior foreign leaders. Additional reports claim she made provocative remarks to Greek officials regarding U.S. foreign intervention.

Before taking office, she also reportedly solicited financial assistance from a donor to resolve personal credit card debt in exchange for political access—triggering a formal investigation by the State Department inspector general into her conduct and lifestyle abroad.

Insiders report that Guilfoyle, who spent years embedded within the Trump family's political circle, kept a detailed record of internal dynamics, disputes, and operations. Referred to by sources as a secret diary or "burn book," the contents have fueled anxiety among presidential allies regarding what information she might share now that she has left her post. With federal investigations underway and personal ties severed, her return sets up a tense political dynamic in Washington.

Politics Now Trump Leaning Into Racism and Bigotry

As the November election approaches, the political landscape is increasingly defined by personal attacks, identity politics, and debates over constitutional norms. With voters primarily focused on economic pressures such as the rising costs of housing, food, and fuel, campaigns face intense pressure to shift public attention.

Recent campaign stops have featured direct verbal attacks on Democratic candidates. In Tennessee and Ohio, Trump targeted Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, using deliberately altered names and inflammatory labels. Meanwhile, during a rally in Texas, JD Vance directed personal insults at Democratic candidate James Talarico amid local Republican primary controversies.

These rhetoric-driven strategies have coincided with heightened scrutiny of federal investigations and political figures. Following a federal raid on the Washington, D.C., home of Representative Ilhan Omar, questions were raised regarding the scope of constitutional protections for naturalized citizens. Critics and legal scholars point out that the Fourteenth Amendment guarantees equal citizenship rights regardless of background, making public debates over who the Constitution protects a central issue in contemporary political discourse.

Imagine not knowing you have no expectation of privacy in a room full of people.

During a congressional debate in Cambridge, Maryland, Republican Representative Andy Harris snapped at audience members after they laughed and groaned at his response regarding rising fuel costs.

Facing Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz, Harris blamed soaring diesel prices on Democratic environmental regulations. When the crowd openly mocked the explanation, Harris accused them of violating free speech principles.

"You all say you believe there’s a First Amendment, but only if you agree with you," Harris told the crowd. "You should let me finish the sentence, ma’am. You are rude!"

Debate moderator Glenna Heckathorn intervened to restore order, asking both candidates to quiet their supporters. Schwartz complied, noting the importance of civil discourse, but Harris refused to back down, claiming only his opponent's supporters were being disruptive.

The tension underscored broader frustrations over energy costs. While Harris pointed to domestic policies, fuel prices have surged due to Middle Eastern conflicts and Iranian control of critical shipping lanes, driving diesel past six dollars a gallon compared to under three dollars prior to the conflict.

The confrontation spilled over after the event. Harris, who chairs the House Freedom Caucus and has largely avoided in-person town halls since 2023, attempted to have a reporter arrested for recording his post-debate comments after she questioned him about his support for the administration's foreign policy.

Politics Now Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Repairs Blamed on Rushed Schedule, Not Vandalism

An engineering report has revealed that damage to the new blue coating at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was caused by rushed construction work rather than vandalism.

The 75-page failure analysis by Atlantic Coating Inspection found that the custom "American flag blue" liner buckled along eight expansion joints, blistered in nearly 40 places from trapped moisture, and peeled in two dozen spots. Workers had refilled the pool before the material properly set in a push to complete the project for the nation’s 250th anniversary on July 4.

The project's costs have escalated significantly. Initially estimated at $1.5 million, spending on the renovation has reached nearly $20 million through various no-bid contracts granted by the Department of the Interior to firms such as Atlantic Industrial Coatings, American Ag Energy, and Green Water Solutions. Federal officials bypassed standard competitive bidding procedures by citing urgent timelines.

The peeling liner initially led to criminal charges against 67-year-old David Hearn, who was accused of damaging the pool. Prosecutors later dropped the case after determining the damage stemmed from a botched installation rather than vandalism. A D.C. Superior Court judge permanently dismissed the charges, noting that further prosecution would be the result of political pressure. Hearn’s legal team has since called for an independent investigation into the handling of the case.

The pool has been drained and repaired recently, and refilling is underway.

During a political rally in Youngstown, Ohio, on Monday evening, Trump highlighted U.S. Senator Jon Husted’s background as a college football player, pairing the endorsement with personal remarks about the senator's physical appearance.

Trump, speaking alongside gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, told the crowd that former NFL coach Jon Gruden had informed him of Husted's athletic career at the University of Dayton, where Husted played as a defensive back and kick returner.

Recalling a previous encounter, Trump described inspecting Husted's physique:

"I started examining his body, because I didn't know he was a great athlete," Trump said, adding that he looked at Husted's build and hands before concluding, "You are a great athlete."

Later in the speech, Trump directed attention to Husted while discussing a defense contract involving a Cleveland manufacturing plant. He asked the senator to stand, watched him rise, and addressed the crowd regarding his appearance:

"Look at that jawline, I'm telling you," Trump said. "I never saw that, I never studied him, and now I study him. I say 'Why was he such a good footballer?' Look at the jawline, he's tough as hell."

Husted was appointed to the Senate in January 2025 to fill the seat previously held by JD Vance and is currently facing a tight reelection contest against Democrat Sherrod Brown.

The Hill Why a Democratic Sweep Could End the GOP Presidency

Trump warned a Youngstown, Ohio, crowd on Monday that the Republican Party faces permanent defeat if Democrats control the federal government over the next two election cycles.

Speaking in support of local candidates, Trump argued that Democrats intend to rewrite the rules of American governance to consolidate power. He told the audience that a Democratic sweep would lead to the addition of roughly 12 electoral votes, four new senators, and 10 members of the House of Representatives.

Trump also targeted the federal judiciary, claiming Democrats ultimately plan to expand the Supreme Court to 23 justices—well beyond the 13-justice proposals previously discussed by party leaders. Democratic lawmakers have pushed for court reforms in response to the conservative majority established during Trump's presidency, alongside calls to reform the Electoral College.

The Ohio rally served as a campaign stop for Republican senatorial candidate Jon Husted and gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. Both candidates are relying on Trump's enduring popularity with the GOP base to navigate competitive races in a state Trump previously won. Trump also acknowledged Rep. Max Miller at the event, despite ongoing allegations of domestic abuse against the congressman, which Miller denies.

The Daily Beast Empty Seats: Ohio Rally Turnout Drops as Polls Show Softening Support

Attendance at Trump’s Monday rally in Youngstown, Ohio, dropped notably compared to his past events at the Covelli Center, highlighting a potential dip in voter enthusiasm ahead of the November midterm elections.

Local estimates indicate the event drew about 3,000 attendees, down from roughly 7,000 in 2017 and 5,500 in 2022. Media reports and photographs from the venue showed that upper-level sections were largely empty and a quarter of the seating area was covered with tarps. Trump, who typically comments on crowd sizes, did not mention the attendance figures during his speech.

The event was featured on CNN's The Source, where host Kaitlan Collins broadcasted footage of the vacant seats. The segment also referenced a recent CNN poll indicating Trump holds a 36 percent approval rating among Ohio voters, while Democratic Senate candidate Sherrod Brown leads Republican Jon Husted by six points.

Democratic strategist Karen Finney, speaking on the program, suggested that lower rally turnout can reflect broader voter fatigue or frustration among independents, which may lead some supporters to stay home rather than cast a ballot.

ProPublica The Epidemic of SNAP EBT Theft and Why Congress Refuses to Fix It

Thumbnail

In October 2022, four people walked into a San Diego grocery store, loaded three shopping carts with thousands of cans of Red Bull and Monster Energy, and paid the $10,747 bill using 25 different plastic cards that looked like hotel keys. The cards were cloned using data stolen from out-of-state SNAP recipients.

The transaction was part of a broader operation. Run by a Romanian syndicate dubbed the "Red Bull Crew," the group spent upwards of $300,000 using stolen account information and PINs harvested from at least 174 victims nationwide. They resold the energy drinks online and through smaller stores.

While political rhetoric often focuses heavily on rare instances of recipient fraud, a far larger crisis has exploded under the radar: organized electronic theft from the food-assistance program.

In 2025 alone, $470 million was stolen electronically from SNAP beneficiaries, impacting more than 990,000 households, according to data from Propel, a mobile app company used by recipients.

Unlike traditional bank cards, which were secured with microchips and tap-to-pay technology a decade ago, EBT cards still rely on 1960s-era magnetic stripes. Skimming gangs easily capture this data at gas pumps and corner stores, using it to buy bulk goods like baby formula and energy drinks that are easy to store and resell.

The Secret Service, which investigates financial crimes, has repeatedly briefed Congress on the solution:

"One of the biggest ways we're going fight this is to just get chips in the cards," said Michael Peck, assistant special agent in charge of the Secret Service's Criminal Investigative Division.

Despite the proven effectiveness of chip cards, congressional leadership has consistently blocked national funding. Lawmakers cite budgetary constraints, even though the estimated $215 million cost to upgrade the system pales in comparison to the hundreds of millions lost annually.

Compounding the problem, a bipartisan federal program that reimbursed victims for stolen funds was effectively dismantled. Federal funding and staffing for oversight have been slashed, and state administrators have been buried under new administrative requirements, forcing them to pause their own chip-card transitions.

With federal policy paralyzed, the Secret Service has resorted to inspecting physical card readers store-by-store to remove skimming devices. While these missions are well-intentioned, law enforcement officials admit they cannot arrest their way out of the crisis. Low-level runners continue to cycle in from overseas, and catching them does little to stop the next wave.

States that managed to transition to chip technology independently—such as California, which saw benefit theft drop by up to 83%—prove that the technology works. Yet, without federal action or mandatory real-time fraud alerts common to standard banking, millions of working families and retirees remain vulnerable to having their grocery money wiped out overnight.

Politics Now Party Like It's 1999... with Two Fugitives: Texas Senate Race Shaken by New Paxton Revelations

Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton spent New Year’s Eve 2024 at a luxury hotel in Dubai with his mistress and two men indicted on federal healthcare fraud charges, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The two men—healthcare executives Anosh Ahmed and Sameer Suhail—were charged with embezzling $15 million from a Chicago-area hospital. Ahmed also faced charges over an alleged $195 million fraudulent Covid-19 testing scheme and had donated $190,000 to Paxton’s attorney general campaign, including $25,000 shortly after his federal indictment. Both men have since returned to the U.S. to await trial.

Paxton has not directly addressed the video footage from Dubai. A senior campaign adviser told the Journal that Paxton is a victim of political persecution.

The report arrives at a difficult time for the campaign. Democratic state representative James Talarico holds a narrow lead in recent polls ahead of the November 3 election, threatening to break the decades-long streak of statewide Republican victories in Texas. Donald Trump, who endorsed Paxton over incumbent Senator John Cornyn, reportedly dismissed warnings about potential damaging revelations before making his endorsement.

Paxton’s career is marked by persistent controversy. The Texas House impeached him in 2023 on abuse-of-office charges before the state Senate acquitted him. Whistleblower aides later won a $6.6 million lawsuit against his office. Meanwhile, Angela Paxton, his wife of 38 years, filed for divorce citing adultery, and public records show his net worth grew from under $175,000 in 2002 to approximately $5.5 million by 2018, alongside ownership of 15 properties valued at $9 million.

While a Senate Republican PAC is running ads featuring Angela Paxton urging voters to support the GOP ticket, she avoids mentioning her estranged husband by name.

Historically, Texas voters have punished political corruption at the ballot box, notably during the 1971 Sharpstown stock fraud scandal that resulted in sweeping losses for incumbent politicians.

Politics Now The Hidden Cost of Meta’s New AI Assistant: A Parasite?

Thumbnail

Meta’s new personal artificial intelligence assistant, Muse, has gained millions of users since its September launch. Advertised on billboards from the East Bay to downtown San Francisco as a round-the-clock digital helper, the app handles everyday tasks such as ordering groceries, booking hotels, and making phone calls.

However, using Muse requires granting the app access to sensitive personal data, including bank accounts, calendars, contacts, and messaging histories. Tech reporters and researchers have raised concerns about how much control users hand over to the software. In tests and early reviews, some users noted a tendency to rely entirely on the assistant for decision-making, while researchers found that the system actively logs and profiles relationships through personal messages and photos.

Meta maintains that this level of data access is necessary for any AI agent to function usefully, noting that the assistant operates with user permission and does not feed personal chat data directly into the company's ad targeting systems.

Despite these assurances, reported glitches have highlighted potential risks. Reviewers have documented instances where the assistant acted without explicit final confirmation, such as mismanaging online marketplace listings or accessing private communications unexpectedly. As adoption grows, the debate continues over whether the convenience of automated personal assistance outweighs the privacy trade-offs of sharing one's life data with a major technology corporation.

The Intercept_ Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-IL) Introduced a Proposal to Abolish the Department of Homeland Security

Thumbnail
theintercept.com

Representative Delia Ramirez is introducing legislation to dismantle the Department of Homeland Security, end immigrant detention, and roll back federal surveillance powers established after the September 11 attacks.

The Reimagining Safety Act would dissolve DHS and distribute its responsibilities across other agencies. The Department of Justice would assume immigration enforcement, the Department of Transportation would take over the Transportation Security Administration and the Coast Guard, and the Treasury Department would handle customs.

To replace DHS, the bill creates a Department of Community Safety to oversee the Federal Emergency Management Agency and fund public health approaches to violence prevention, alongside support programs for asylum-seekers staffed by social workers and medical professionals.

The bill also seeks to curb broad federal policing powers. It prevents the government from placing individuals on the no-fly list without a criminal conviction or warrant, and terminates the secretary of state's authority to designate foreign terrorist organizations.

The legislation comes amid heightened scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement. Last week, an ICE agent in New York City shot 28-year-old Oscar Belgal in the neck while his five-year-old child sat in the backseat. At least 28 people have died in ICE custody this year, and federal agents have shot at least 25 people over the past year.

The bill follows a Homeland Security Investigations search of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s home, which the Department of Justice described as part of an ongoing criminal investigation. Omar’s office called the raid an abuse of federal power.

Ramirez argued that the raid and recent agent-involved shootings demonstrate how DHS functions as a political tool.

The legislation faces steep opposition in Congress, where Republicans hold the majority and few Democrats support abolishing ICE or DHS. Because Congress is currently in recess for campaign season, the bill will not see a vote before November 9 at the earliest. Ramirez acknowledged the long odds, stating the bill is meant to demonstrate a legislative alternative to the post-9/11 security apparatus.

CNBC Trump Administration Asks U.S. Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, to Resign Following Ethics Reports

U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle announced on Tuesday that she will step down from her post, shortly after the White House confirmed she was asked to leave.

The departure follows a series of reports in The Wall Street Journal detailing questions about Guilfoyle's conduct during her yearlong tenure in Athens. A Sept. 25 report alleged that she persistently promoted a Greek company and included a lobbyist for a construction firm in meetings with foreign officials, drawing scrutiny from ethics experts and former government officials.

Speaking to reporters outside the White House on Tuesday morning, Trump indicated that the media coverage prompted the administration's decision.

"She was doing a good job, but we didn't like what we were reading," Trump said before boarding Marine One.

When a reporter noted that Guilfoyle was nearly a member of his family due to her past engagement to Trump Jr., Trump pushed back:

"No, she wasn't a member of my family," Trump replied. "She, I guess, dated my son a long time ago, but she wasn't."

Hours earlier, White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia announced the resignation request during her first appearance in the briefing room.

"We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign," Zacharia said. "She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well."

In a post on X, Guilfoyle announced her impending departure while broadly denying the accusations.

"These allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity," Guilfoyle wrote. "I will not allow false accusations to define my decades of public service."

The Bulwark A MAGA Hoax About a James Talarico Collapses Under Basic Fact-Checking

When Texas State Representative James Talarico missed nine days on the campaign trail due to the flu, right-wing commentators filled the silence with rumors. Online figures claimed Talarico was not sick with the flu, but was instead admitted to a psychiatric facility in Mason, Ohio.

The conspiracy peaked when influencers Rhein Amacher and Nick Sortor posted an audio clip to X. In the 45-second recording, a caller asks a hospital employee about Talarico, and the employee responds that he was "just discharged this evening." The post gained millions of views within hours and received repeated boosts from Elon Musk. Talarico’s campaign immediately called the story a lie.

The claim fell apart almost instantly.

First, the narrative made little practical sense. A Texas politician seeking medical care would have no clear reason to travel secretly to an Ohio facility rather than seeking treatment locally or privately at home.

Second, the timeline was impossible. Amacher stated he placed the call on Saturday evening, but Talarico was already back in Texas. He attended the Austin City Limits music festival on Friday and a Kacey Musgraves concert on Saturday.

Finally, the evidence itself was incomplete. The audio shared publicly was only a brief excerpt from a six-minute conversation, leaving the full context of the call unverified and raising further questions about how the recording was obtained and edited.

HuffPost DOGE’s Real Purpose: Alex Gibney's New 'Musk' Documentary Details Elon Musk's Expanding Power and Data Collection

Alex Gibney’s four-hour documentary Musk hits theaters next week, tracing Elon Musk's trajectory from tech entrepreneur to political actor.

The film highlights texts Musk sent to former right-wing influencer Ashley St. Clair shortly before Election Day 2024. In the exchange, Musk claimed he was "optimistic" because he was preparing to "unleash the anomaly in the matrix," referencing "over 10,000 lasers in space." At a recent screening, Gibney noted he cannot verify whether Musk was lying or boasting, but theorized the comment referred to retrieving real-time election reporting data through online voting systems rather than altering vote counts directly.

The documentary covers Musk’s operational background at Tesla and SpaceX, alongside recurring criticisms of his conduct. It examines his pattern of overpromising product features—specifically Tesla’s self-driving software, which has drawn lawsuits and safety investigations—and touches on his personal life, including his pro-natalist stance and relationships with the mothers of his children.

A central focus of the film involves Musk’s recent oversight of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The documentary details how DOGE’s young staff abruptly halted federal research, cut National Weather Service funding, and disrupted USAID distribution networks.

More critically, Gibney and executive producer Ronan Farrow raised alarms about DOGE’s access to government information. According to Gibney, inexperienced staff gained "super admin" status within days, granting them access to classified files and personal citizen data across multiple agencies. Farrow stated that sensitive information, including Social Security numbers, addresses, and phone numbers, was harvested and shared with third parties without public oversight. The filmmakers suggest this data could be weaponized as training material for artificial intelligence tools during upcoming election cycles.

Musk has responded by attacking Gibney on X and blocking promotional ads for the documentary across major social media platforms. While the film is slated for a January release on HBO, its streaming debut remains uncertain following the network's acquisition by the Ellison family, who hold close political ties to Trump.

The Daily Beast Federal Agents Search Representative Ilhan Omar’s D.C.-Area Residence

Thumbnail

Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a federal search warrant Monday morning at the Washington, D.C.-area home of Representative Ilhan Omar.

A Department of Justice spokesperson confirmed the search, stating that the action is part of an active federal criminal investigation. Sources indicated the probe focuses on immigration paperwork filed by Omar’s late father following their family’s arrival in the United States from Somalia during the 1990s.

Omar lived in a Kenyan refugee camp for four years before arriving in the U.S. in 1995. She became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000 at age 17 and was elected to represent Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District in 2018, becoming the first Somali American in Congress.

The search comes after months of public statements from administration officials targeting Omar. Border Czar Tom Homan announced last month that DHS was investigating her immigration background, while Vice President JD Vance and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin have publicly raised the possibility of revoking her citizenship or revoking her legal status.

Before the search, Omar stated that investigators had not reached out to her directly and called the allegations a long-standing, political attack driven by right-wing opponents.

The move against Omar occurs alongside an ongoing federal crackdown in Minnesota. Trump has cited large-scale state welfare fraud cases to deploy thousands of federal agents to the state. That enforcement effort previously drew national scrutiny after federal officers shot and killed two American citizens during separate incidents in Minneapolis in January.

**Trump is threatening to suspend key military support to Ukraine to force Kyiv to end its strikes on Russian energy infrastructure and oil refineries, according to European officials cited by the Financial Times.

US officials have been contacting European governments and Ukrainian leadership to demand a halt to the deep-strike campaign. To enforce compliance, Washington threatened to cut off intelligence sharing as well as access to the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), the primary system used to procure US weaponry for Ukrainian forces.

One European official confirmed receiving a call from a US defense representative, stating that American officials were contacting partners across Europe and in Kyiv directly.

The report follows a statement by Trump announcing an immediate "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine. Trump called on both nations to honor the agreement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was waiting for details regarding the proposed arrangement.

Politics Now Air Force Officer Who Called for Trump’s Impeachment Held in Solitary Confinement Ahead of Court-Martial

An Air Force officer who publicly called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump is being held in 24-hour solitary confinement as he awaits trial.

Maj. Jason Watson was arrested on July 1 on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. Demonstrating in uniform, he carried a sign that read "Impeach. Convict. Remove." Following a CNN interview where he repeated his criticisms, the Air Force placed him into pretrial confinement on August 18 at a Maryland county facility.

Watson’s attorney, Christopher Mutimer, stated that Watson remains entirely isolated, spending even meal and exercise periods alone.

Prosecutors charged Watson under three articles of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, including Article 88, a rarely used provision that forbids military officers from using contemptuous words against the president. The government is pursuing a general court-martial, which represents the military's highest level of criminal trial.

Military law governs how service members are treated before conviction. Article 13 of the UCMJ states that pretrial confinement cannot be used as punishment and must not be more severe than necessary. If a judge finds that pretrial conditions violated these standards, credit can be awarded toward a final sentence.

The Air Force initially justified the confinement by citing probable cause to prevent ongoing misconduct, stating Watson remains presumed innocent. Neither the service nor defense counsel provided further comment regarding the current isolation conditions.

A hearing officer recommended in September that the primary charges proceed to a general court-martial. Watson's defense requested that the matter be handled instead through a special court-martial, referencing the past case of Marine Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller, who received lesser penalties after criticizing leadership over the Afghanistan withdrawal.

The convening authority has not yet publicly confirmed a formal trial referral, and no trial date has been set. Watson remains in pretrial detention.

NBC News Federal Judge Halts Taxpayer-Funded Trump Ads

A federal judge in New York ordered Trump on Sunday to immediately stop broadcasting government-funded advertisements that promote him.

U.S. District Judge Jennifer Rochon of the Southern District of New York ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, which include watchdog group Common Cause, a New York labor union, and an Alabama Democratic candidate. Rochon determined that the group was likely to win the case on its merits and that allowing the spots to remain on air caused irreparable harm to the public interest.

The ruling blocks Trump from using Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funds to produce, distribute, or air the advertisements.

In a Saturday court filing, Trump argued that DHS had only purchased ad spots through Sunday and instructed its vendor not to buy additional airtime. Judge Rochon rejected the argument that the case was moot and ordered all remaining ads—including those scheduled for Sunday night—cancelled immediately.

Critics had previously pointed out that one of the disputed spots was nearly identical to a 2024 Trump campaign ad, raising concerns about the illegal use of federal funds for partisan messaging.

"There is no legal justification — and no precedent — for the president to use the machinery of the government and funds set aside by Congress for other uses to influence electoral outcomes," the plaintiffs said in a joint statement following the decision. Common Cause CEO Virginia Kase Solomón added that the group will continue legal efforts to hold Trump accountable.

The White House, DHS, the Office of Management and Budget, and the political action committee MAGA Inc. did not respond to requests for comment.

Politics Now The Core Conflict Reshaping Modern Politics

Thumbnail
commondreams.org
1 Upvotes

To understand current global politics, ignore standard party labels and focus on a single divide: progress versus preservation.

The conservative view assumes existing social structures represent a proven, natural order that should resist major change. The opposing view holds that societies are flawed products of past power imbalances that require active correction. Looking globally, the forces of preservation and reaction currently hold the upper hand, from rising far-right parties in Europe to aggressive nationalist policies in the Middle East and the Americas.

This shift did not happen overnight, nor did it occur solely through radical movements. Incremental political decisions paved the way. When offered the chance to execute broad reforms, mainstream leaders routinely back down to avoid disrupting established corporate interests. The American healthcare debate provides a clear example: universal national coverage was abandoned by reformers who deemed the transition too disruptive, opting instead to preserve the existing market structure.

Decades of prioritizing business interests over systemic reform gradually shifted the political center. This long-term trend made it easy for authoritarian tactics to take root. State authority quickly transformed into militarized law enforcement, aggressive border crackdowns, harsh detention practices, and unilateral foreign policy threats.

Labeling this environment as simply a "weakening of democracy" minimizes the reality. Waiting for election cycles to resolve deep structural shifts ignores how fast authority consolidates. Stopping an authoritarian drift requires calling it what it is and addressing the root power structures rather than relying on standard political routines.

AP News Senate Group Demands Trump Cancel Russian Diesel Deal

Six senators are demanding President Donald Trump immediately reverse a plan to buy Russian diesel aimed at easing high fuel prices.

Trump announced the deal on social media following a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Under the arrangement, Russia would send 300,000 tons of diesel to global and American markets right away, followed by an additional 4.5 million tons over the coming months.

Four Republican senators—Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Thom Tillis, and John Curtis—joined Democratic senators Jeanne Shaheen and Richard Blumenthal in protesting the move. In a joint statement, the group argued the decision violates a 2022 law banning Russian energy imports and bypasses statutory requirements to consult Congress.

"The United States should not provide Putin with a financial lifeline while Russia continues to kill Ukrainian civilians," the lawmakers wrote.

Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Tillis warned that proceeding with the purchase puts the administration in direct violation of federal law. The announcement also conflicts with recent legislation passed by Congress directing the administration to penalize major importers of Russian fossil fuels.

Defending the president, Republican Sen. John Barrasso said Trump is focused on cutting energy costs for Americans and suggested the agreement could serve as leverage against Putin.

Energy analysts remain skeptical. Richard Nephew, a senior research scholar at Columbia University’s Center on Global Energy Policy, pointed out that the entire planned volume equals less than one day of standard U.S. diesel consumption. Experts warn the small influx will do little to reduce pump prices while undermining international sanctions against Moscow.

The Daily Beast DOJ Moves to Indict Former Trump Aide Cassidy Hutchinson Over Jan. 6 Testimony

Thumbnail

The Department of Justice is preparing to seek an indictment against Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House aide whose 2022 testimony before the House January 6 committee became a focal point of investigations into the Capitol riot.

Prosecutors are targeting Hutchinson for allegedly making false statements to Congress. During her televised appearance, she provided dramatic accounts of internal West Wing dynamics on January 6, 2021.

According to her testimony, then-President Donald Trump became enraged when Secret Service agents refused to drive him to the Capitol, at one point attempting to grab the steering wheel himself. She also testified that Trump and former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows were warned the crowd at the Ellipse was armed, prompting Trump to demand the removal of metal detectors with the remark, "They're not here to hurt me. Take the f---ing mags away." Additionally, she stated that when told rioters were chanting "Hang Mike Pence," Trump remarked that Pence "deserves it."

Congressional Republicans have spent years accusing Hutchinson of fabricating these claims. The effort to prosecute her aligns with a broader shift during Trump's second term, marked by the federal pardoning of roughly 1,600 January 6 defendants and a widespread effort by GOP officials to rebrand the participants as patriots and victims rather than criminals.

Despite the DOJ's intent to proceed, obtaining an indictment is not guaranteed. The case relies on securing an indictment from a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C. Juries in the district have recently pushed back against administration-backed prosecutions, declining to indict individuals in unrelated cases brought forward by the Justice Department.

Federal immigration agents shot a 28-year-old man in the neck during an operation in the Marble Hill neighborhood of New York City, sparking immediate condemnation from local officials and protests in the streets.

Oscar Belgal was driving a gray Honda CR-V when plainclothes federal officers approached his vehicle. NYPD surveillance footage shows one officer with a drawn gun walking toward the driver's side window while a second officer approached from the front. The SUV then drove away as agents fired at least seven rounds. Bullets struck both the windshield and the rear window.

A five-year-old boy, believed to be Belgal’s son, was inside the vehicle during the shooting. The child was uninjured and is now in the care of relatives.

When NYPD officers arrived, they encountered several armed men wearing construction vests and masks. Belgal was handcuffed on the ground. Police placed him in a cruiser, provided first aid, and transported him to a hospital. ICE agents subsequently removed Belgal from the hospital to take him into federal custody while he was still receiving medical treatment.

The DHS stated that Belgal is from the Dominican Republic and accused him of gang affiliation. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted that Belgal pleaded guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny three years ago and faces a pending drug charge from last year. Federal authorities have not explained why agents opened fire on a vehicle carrying a young child.

Local leaders strongly criticized the operation. Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the shooting unconscionable and stated he spoke with federal officials in an unsuccessful attempt to secure Belgal’s release. Mamdani reiterated his call for Congress to abolish ICE, declaring that New York City will not tolerate such actions. Governor Kathy Hochul also spoke with federal leadership, urging them to halt ICE operations in the state and release body camera footage of the incident.

Federal agencies have taken over the investigation, drawing criticism from advocates like Murad Awawdeh of the New York Immigration Coalition, who questioned the appropriateness of federal investigators probing an incident involving their own personnel.

Hundreds of protesters gathered in the streets by Thursday evening. The shooting follows recent complaints from local elected officials, who had asked a nearby Target store to stop allowing ICE to use its parking lot as a staging area.

The New Republic Trump Renews Push to Oust Fed Commissioner Lisa Cook

Trump has established a new committee to investigate Federal Reserve Commissioner Lisa Cook over allegations that she made false statements in mortgage documents.

In a presidential memo released Wednesday, Trump stated that his role requires ensuring laws are faithfully executed, which includes firing subordinates he claims cannot be trusted.

Cook is not legally Trump's subordinate. In June, the Supreme Court blocked her removal, ruling that the government failed to provide her with proper due process and temporarily protecting the Federal Reserve's independence.

This latest move follows a long-running dispute. Over a year ago, Trump accused Cook—the first Black woman to serve on the Federal Reserve board—of mortgage fraud by maintaining two primary residences. Cook refused to resign and filed a lawsuit, arguing that the president lacks the legal authority and cause to terminate her employment. In August, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino informed Cook that the administration was once again considering her removal.

Cook has not been charged with any crime. Meanwhile, public reports indicate that Trump’s own mortgage agreements share the same criteria his Department of Justice is using to target Cook, as well as other political opponents, including Senator Adam Schiff, former Representative Eric Swalwell, and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

The newly formed committee is scheduled to meet next month to review the allegations against Cook.

Politics Now Why the White House Rejected Humane ICE Facilities

A longtime government contractor says the Department of Homeland Security turned down a proposal to build more humane immigration detention facilities because the White House demanded harsh conditions.

The contractor pitched a FEMA-style camp model to DHS officials as an alternative to housing detainees in converted warehouses. According to the contractor, DHS leadership rejected the idea, stating they had pushed back against Trump directives but were overruled.

"Everybody knew warehouses are horrible places to put people," the contractor said, noting that officials told him Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff, wanted the facilities to be deliberately uncomfortable and severe.

"Steve Miller certainly seemed to make that point to everyone that he wanted it to be cruel," the contractor added. "In 25 years of working with the U.S. government, I’ve never been in that position before."

The White House strongly denied the claims. Spokesperson Lauren Bis dismissed the remarks as "false hearsay allegation(s) from someone who has never even met or talked with Stephen Miller" and labeled them "defamatory."

The dispute comes amid ongoing criticism of Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities. Under Miller's tenure, tens of thousands of people—including lawful immigrants, U.S. citizens, and individuals without criminal records—have been held in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions with limited access to food, water, medical care, and legal counsel.

Federal data shows that ICE recorded 33 detainee deaths in 2025, marking the highest annual total in two decades, with another 28 deaths reported as of early October 2026.

Politics Now Rules for Me, But Not For Thee: When a GOP Senator's Unpaid Bakery Bill Exposes a Double Standard

Republican Senator Roger Marshall is facing an unexpectedly competitive reelection race in Kansas, fueled by a controversy that highlights a familiar political frustration: the disconnect between powerful politicians and everyday business owners.

The issue stems from a Facebook post by Holly Thomas, owner of Holly's Sweet Treats in Hutchinson, Kansas. Thomas revealed that Marshall's 2020 primary election campaign never paid a $678.75 invoice for cookies and refreshments. Operating a brand-new business during the COVID-19 pandemic, Thomas stated that every dollar was critical. She spent nearly a year calling and emailing campaign staff without receiving a response or payment, leading her to vow never to vote for him.

The situation drew wider attention due to Marshall's past professional record. Before entering politics, Marshall worked as a physician and faced criticism for aggressive medical debt collection tactics against patients who owed small amounts, which included filing lawsuits and issuing arrest warrants. Critics point out the hypocrisy of a politician who used severe legal measures over minor patient debts while reportedly leaving a local bakery unpaid for a modest order.

Marshall is running against Democratic nominee Adam Hamilton, a minister attempting to win a Senate seat for his party in Kansas for the first time since 1932. While Kansas remains a reliably conservative state, localized controversies and stark contrasts in personal conduct can shift voter momentum in unexpected ways.
