Trump is going to keep using the state to attack Democrats as his hold on power weakens.

•

u/Reasonable-Tea-9679 4h ago

Is it really weakening? His actual power? I think it's moreso like a little sliver of the american public is just becoming more aware of his bullshit, but he is still getting by through exceedingly troubling means. He wants to become an emperor and has the funds and lack of morality to do so.

•

u/anonyuser415 4h ago

And his base's "news" is about as close to reality as prisoners in a cave watching shadows on a wall. They just have no idea that some of this stuff is even going on. The DHS was on Newsmax saying they had proof Ilhan Omar married her brother lol.

•

u/Reasonable-Tea-9679 4h ago

Yeah, this goes beyond just Trump. It's decades of poor education which has led to the general public not having the ability to critically absorb the information they consume (plus a slew of other issues I'm too lazy to dive into like celebrity worship, left vs right, etc.) that has created this culture that is exceptionally easily triggered but doesn't know how to take effective action and has a very insular objective.

•

u/Not_Stupid Australia 52m ago

I think it's deeper than that. There's plenty of educated people who choose to believe the bullshit anway. Because it fits their chosen narrative.

I think the USA has a deep cultural problem that starts with racism/slavery, continues with "prosperity gospel" religion and the illusion of hard work = wealth, and finishes with the delusion of manifest destiny.

You can think about Trump as abusive spouse. The time that an abuser is the most dangerous is when his spouse is about to leave. He knows that his power is about to end and he's flailing.

Is it really weakening? His actual power?

So, at one point in the not too distant past, the USA was a dominant power int his world. One of two great super powers, but the one of them that other nations gravitated towards, emulated & adopted our culture.

Our dollar is still the international currency of choice, and our media dominated the globe.

Then, our great enemy failed & our own power began to wane. Our cultural & economic power over the world sliped, but we didn't want to admit that we where no longer the hegemon we once where.

So what did we do, we've begun to increase the use of our outsized military power in place of that soft power that is evaporating. The more we do so, the more our soft power evaporates & the more we lean into hard power.

This is a process that started before Trump, but W. and Trump both accelerated it.

Trump's actions here, are the same thing but in miniature. He has lost real control & power, and is attempting more desperate & less legitimate forms of power BECAUSE he's lost the legitimate power.

This is a pivotal moment, it is the only time in the next two years we will see an ability to strip him of power outside of an actual coup or revolution. The obvious next point is 2028.

•

u/Purify5 2h ago edited 2h ago

Here's a different perspective.

Global hegemony is always based on an abundance of or first development of a key resource. The Dutch used windmills to cut logs and make the fastest trade-ships in the world. The Spanish plundered Central and South America for massive amounts of gold and silver which gave them immense buying power. The British used their coal and iron ore to create the first factories that were able to forge and shape metal to their will. And, the Americans used their oil to produce the most efficient distribution network for goods, the strongest military the world has ever seen and most importantly control of the oil trade.

Each of these periods of time are different but they have similarities too. One of the similarities is at the end of a country's reign as hegemon they make a last ditch desperate effort to hold on.

Everyone can see that oil's dominance of trade has a finish line. China is next in line as they have been the first to develop the supply-chains for rare-earth minerals the resources needed for modern day batteries, microchips, and electric motors which will power the future.

America is starting its desperation phase and the question is how desperate will they get? The Brits tried to use WWI to hold onto power, the Dutch bankrupted themselves fighting a ridiculously long war with the French and the Spanish tried the old marry a monarch from another power to create a superpower routine. Hopefully America learns to be content with playing catch-up but history would suggest we're probably all in for a bad time.

•

u/Reasonable-Tea-9679 3h ago

more our soft power evaporates & the more we lean into hard power.

Precisely what I mean.

•

u/RupeThereItIs 3h ago

But that is a sign of waning power.

You can't hold on to power that way, not for long.

You can do a lot of damage on the way down, but it won't last.

You make too many enemies.

Why target her, and not an actually influential Democrat? Is she serving on some kind of committee where she holds sway over something?

Why not do this to Newsome, or AOC?

•

u/BisexualCaveman 4h ago

Racism may well be the answer here.

•

u/barryho 4h ago

It usually is

•

u/lyngen 3h ago

and sexism. That man and his cronies have a problem with influential, upstanding women of color

•

u/Belkroe 4h ago

Trump is deeply racist towards Somalians and of course hates women of color. So she is the perfect target of his ire.

→ More replies (1)

•

u/Equal-Membership1664 3h ago

A few reasons...

1:He and his base hates her specifically, and a lot about recent Minnesota events

2: She is up for re-election in a few weeks

3: He needs red meat to throw to the base because they are pissed at him for betraying all of them, and he sees the writing on the wall for tne midterms.

4: She's Somalian, and they are on one about the Somali 'corruption' in MN. (I'm not denying that there was none at all, I haven't seen any facts either way)

5:Newsom is not in the House, but a governer of the state that is the American economic powerhouse. AOC is in the house with Omar but has much more political sway and fucking with her would cost you much more political capital, too much actually or they would be on that warpath as well

•

u/Brook420 1h ago

There was some corruption in MN, and SOME Somali immigrants were involved. Thougj the ringleader was a white woman.

But the corruption was investigated and those at fault were held accountable.

This was a case of the system working.

But the racist MAGA crowd wants to act as if this is some major conspiracy that the entire Somali community and the Dems worked together on.

→ More replies (1)

•

u/sci3nc3isc00l 4h ago

This is just how it begins. It’s more digestible to go after political opponents if they’re a Muslim immigrant.

•

u/CatPartyElvis 3h ago

Chip away at the votes Dems have one by one.

→ More replies (2)

•

u/banksy_h8r New York 2h ago

Because if he attempted to do the same to President Obama, who was his original nativist boogeyman, there'd be a national uproar and he'd be roundly condemned by most non-MAGA Republicans and there'd be rioting in the streets by Democrats. It might actually trigger a civil war. Ilhan Omar? No Republicans are going to stand up for her, and she's not so beloved by Democrats as to start riots.

Also, he's sexist and racist and truly, truly, hates Black women.

He hates Black women so much, he can't stop making sexy comments about white men. Just kidding, he's also a repressed bisexual.

•

u/Willthisaccountlas 4h ago

She is the perfect target to motivate trump supporters. MAGA is fundamentally motivated by fear of the "other" replacing white christians. So she's a perfect target.

•

u/tidal_flux 3h ago

Female, minority, immigrant, Muslim, from Minnesota. How could he NOT attack her?

•

u/TrillbillySocialist 3h ago

Yep. Just giving his base slop to cheer for as the looming midterms defeat nears. This is strictly for his base.

•

u/HotPaper7674 4h ago

Because he goes after the people most vulnerable to demonization—brown people and women. To that point, AOC is much higher on the list than Newsome.

•

u/RiotSynthetics 4h ago

AOC too popular, newsome is white and charming to him and also more popular than him. He’s just using illhan as a test to see how much he can get away with before going deeper and deeper with abuse of powers until he gets major pushback. Which probably won’t happen since dems are little bitches and republicans are cucks for Trump.

•

u/saerra_sea_nya 4h ago

And straight up: maga talks about Somalians the way you or I wouldn’t talk about a cockroach. It’s so disturbing.

Minnesota has a competitive Senate race. They're trying to reboot the narrative that the Dems there are corrupt.

•

u/frontfrontdowndown 3h ago

Because fascism targets out groups first. And then expands. And expands. And expands until everyone is a target.

If they can do this to her they will eventually do it to you and me.

•

u/The_Webweaver 3h ago

Because she's a Muslim immigrant.

•

u/marmiteer 1h ago

She tried to get The "Hague Invasion" Act repealed. With the ICC currently in his sights, the possibility of using the US military to extract a head of state with an arrest warrant in their name who might also have the Epstein tapes becomes a real possibility.

•

u/Pndrizzy 4h ago

she wears a hijab

•

u/rkiive 4h ago

Because he has some technicality to at least pretend to hold on to for justification and as long as you can make even the most tenuous link, the American public and media routinely consider it acceptable regardless of how clearly frivolous it is

•

u/Adrien_Jabroni Michigan 4h ago

No he doesn’t. Her father’s alleged paperwork errors have nothing to do with her.

•

u/rkiive 4h ago

Of course. My comment never implied otherwise.

That is their excuse for targeting her over someone like AOC.

My acknowledgement of the circumstances that exist isn't an acceptance of them.

•

u/redalert825 3h ago

Why not do it to every pedo/rapist and pedo protector in the trumpstein files and outside of them?

•

u/Hexdog13 1h ago

She’s black. Somali. Muslim. Female. Democrat. You get the idea.

•

u/Omatzus 2h ago

Helps with the narrative that MN Dems and Somali immigrants are corrupt and the Senate race there is apparently close

•

u/TeaOk2254 2h ago

He is seriously out to attack Minnesota and Somalians. He just kept taking both during his talk in Youngstown, OH for some reason. He claimed Minnesota was low IQ people, and apparently thinks no one wears pants in Somalia?

I tried listening to the poison he was spewing in my state, but it was a near incomprehensible ramble.

•

u/StarTropicsKing 2h ago

Then fucking call me corrupt. I’m as hard of blue Minnesotan you’ll ever meet and the embodiment of MN Nice. If wanting government to work for the people and supporting your neighbor, immigrant or not, is corrupt then I’m the most corrupt motherfucker on the planet.

•

u/Bamorvia 4h ago

Because Trump is a coward. And he wants to prove to his base that he still hates Muslim politicians who are immigrants after they saw him chilling with Mamdani, I assume.

•

u/PeliPal 4h ago

Because she is an acceptable target to the Dem establishment for being a Muslim, a Somali immigrant, and a progressive who speaks out against the military industrial complex, they're not going to stick their neck out for her the way they would if we were talking about seizing Obama's phone. That's how this shit works, it's why they go after trans people so much, and it's why it's so important to have a united front against each and every single fascist act instead of picking groups whom it is 'acceptable' to throw under the bus. Trump's hope, and he's been correct on this, is powerful Dem politicians and donors will let this go by without response and then the act is normalized to be done on incrementally larger and more influential groups

•

u/Underlord_Fox 4h ago

Oooh, she's being targeted because of the Democrats? Please keep the real villains in focus.

•

u/PizzaWhole9323 2h ago

She's being targeted by a republican administration by a party that holds the presidency the house and the Senate and the Supreme Court. You tell me how the Democrats got her investigated and search warrants applied to her phone and her house and maybe I'll listen to you.

Cue another congressperson with more than one brain cell: "That's actually an Uber Eats order from 5 guys and the person that confirmed it was the Uber driver."

Also they can obtain everything on the democratic strategy for her state and undermine her. Intimidate her family, the local somali community etc, implying there is more of it this if they vote for her (even though they are small minority of her voters)

If you think this abuse of power and targeting of political opponents stops here, you are naive

•

u/Inphiltration 3h ago

You know what's fucked up? Let's say in the really far off chance that Ilhan Omar is actually guilty of whatever they are accusing her of.. the trust in the trump presidency is so damn low and many people, myself included, would be very, very hard pressed to believe the evidence is real and not fake/planted.

Trust is so eroded at this point I can't take anything at face value.

Republicans elect criminals to high office without batting an eye. This is just more fascist claptrap from a corrupt, lawless, criminal Trump administration. Sounds like unfortunately she needs extra security detail and LEO protection heading into the middies?

That's not how this fucking works. You don't go digging for a crime.

Malicious Prosecution. If they don't have any obvious proof, get an injunction against the DOJ. They've made enough partisan moves and horrible mistakes and oversights that it's probably possible to do now.

Let's be clear: a sitting American President is using the government to attack his political opposition. He is targeting not only her race but also her political affiliation. The Dems need plans.

How are democrats so quiet through all this. Should I not be seeing a lot more support and outreach from them to their fellow party leaders?

Despite the weaponization of the justice dept, I think there’s a non-zero chance she’s done something illegal pertaining to immigration. That’s why many are waiting for the results of the investigation.

•

u/Illustrious_Bag_7323 2h ago

Agreed, there are so many things to be upset about but it does look like she may have broken some immigration laws. Even she has posted on Twitter than no one is above the law.

Is this just going to be another dog and pony show where they ask her ridiculous questions to try catch her in a lie? The Jack Smith treatment if you will.

•

u/ResponsibleAnt9496 1h ago

It’s insane to watch my country crumble in real time while nobody does anything. Not to sound corny as hell but there has to be some heroes out there willing to stand up to this, right?

It just feels like the deck is so stacked against us. The right wing oligarchs own Meta, TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, Fox, HBO and CNN. They control the news and the way it’s delivered and Musk and Russia flood social media with bots. How do you fight that? And now people are saying even our voting machines might be rigged.

The majority of white people who voted in the last three elections: 'LET'S FUCKING GO! We love what's happening to non-white people! Did you think the price of eggs or gas was the issue with us? Nah, that's what we said when the cameras were rolling. We take great pleasure in Trump harassing non-white and lgbtq people. And it's 'Promises made, promises kept.' There are two more years of the harassment, beatings, and the deportations, and we're just getting started!

Of those who voted in the last three elections, white women supported a war-mongering, racist, fascist, sexist, child rapist, and child killer in 2016, 2020, and 2024. Naivety and the price of goods were never factors.

my dad used to say the fourth amendment was the only thing keeping regular people from getting steamrolled by whoever had badges that year, and watching them grab her phone without even pretending to follow procedure is making me think he wasnt being dramatic lol. like the whole point of warrants was supposed to be that it didnt matter if you loved or hated the target, the process had to hold. now theyre subpoenaing her relatives too which, idk, feels like the kind of thing that only happens when youre trying to manufacture something rather than find something
