Mod Post First time here? Read this! ~Commenting Etiquette~

1.4k Upvotes

Hi, welcome to the reddit Pole Dance board!
Pole dancing is a great form of art and exercise and our community is very welcoming and open.

It is also something that can put the people doing it in a bit of sensitive, vulnerable situation. Let's face it, you can't wear a lot of clothing while doing this. And a lot of our moves have been built and perfected by lovely strippers working in clubs, so there's inherent sexuality behind it (sometimes, not always).

That being said, I'm rolling out a zero tolerance policy for shitty comments. I get it, the person that posted that picture or video is so hot, their moves are so slick and damn it just did something for you.
Keep it to yourself if you can't express your appreciation without sounding like a vulgar mouth-breather.

Also, coming from my previous thread on crappy comments - If you don't have something nice to say, or you can't phrase your devil's advocate stance or argument without sounding like an asshole, don't post it.

Don't be a creep.
Don't be a jerk.
Don't stripper shame.

No more warnings for people saying inappropriately gross comments, you just get banned. And if you're banned, don't bother asking why - you know why. And no, it won't be overturned. Enjoy the hard work and beautiful shapes people on this board are happy to post. Because I guarantee the more shit comments there are, the less photos there will be for everyone to enjoy.

I try to stay on top of everything, but sometimes things slip by me. Please use the 'Report' button if you spot something I miss and I'll get to it as soon as I can.

Love,
Otter

Mod Post NSFW Tag Reminder

Hello lovelies!
This is just your friendly reminder to please tag your posts NSFW if you are wearing anything less than full-coverage bottoms. Those include things like g-strings, thongs, those super cute high waisted "shorts" that are not at all shorts, etc.

Also, please mark it if you are twerking directly to the camera or other things of that sort.

Since we are technically not a NSFW board, we just ask that you mark posts for the courtesy of others who maybe like to browse in public (I know I've personally clicked on clips while on the train and had to "oop" out of them very quickly.) If you're unsure if what you've posted is NSFW or not, please mark it and I'll change it to non-NSFW if there is no issue.

Thanks for following our guidelines, and thanks, as always, for contributing to our community!
Love,
Otter

EDIT: Update as of April, 2022

Reddit rolled out a new "security" feature that uses automated tools to detect NSFW material and automatically tag it. Announcement post is here.

While this can potentially help me with the manual workload of tagging posts, I noticed it has been automatically flagging a lot of posts that are fine and do not fall within the parameters of NSFW for our board.

I'll be checking the moderation log to see if things are tagged improperly by reddit, but if you think yours has been tagged by mistake, please message me or tag me in your post. Thanks!

I usually would dance quite slow at competitions, but hardstyle and attitude has been the biggest joy I've hit this year. So, I decided to take a risk and break out of my 'usual' slow slinky style, to try and showcase my more 'edgier' side that just wanted to have fun. Turns out, it paid off and ended up being my fav performance at a comp so far. I won the title of Trickster and still buzzing.

All this to say, take the risk. Try ALL the genres of pole. Don't put yourself in a box.

Would love to connect with more dancers here! I follow back @carrot_top_princess 🧡

Inspiration Does anyone still use Patreon?

The video is mostly for visibility lol

So a little bit of my background, I’ve been pole dancing for almost 10 years, and teaching for 7 years. Before my IG got disabled, there was plenty of footage of me dancing, folks know my skill set and do take my classes in person. I’ll also add I have gotten great reviews from community!

I’ve wanted to expand my offerings virtually for folks who may not have a chance to get to an in-person class, and I’ve had a Patreon account for a while now (which does have content on it such as tutorials, full performances, etc.). I guess my question is does anyone actually still go to Patreon for such things?

While I’ve been posting some tutorials on TikTok as of recent, I’ve been wanting to use my Patreon to get a little deeper into teaching more progressions and of course the additional content I’ve mentioned. Admittedly, I haven’t updated the platform in a while as I feel like even when I was promoting it heavily, I didn’t get many subscriptions, and it admittedly gets exhausting finding different avenues for providing content.

Any feedback is welcomed! 🙏🏽

Pole Rookie To stage name, or not to stage name?

Hey! I have my first ever performance coming up, just at the studio I practice at. I’m doing a duo performance with a woman who has performed at the studio before and has used a stage name and plans to use one this time as well.

I don’t have a stage name but don’t mind having one, especially as I actually have a pretty public job. If you googled my full name the first page of results is basically all my work, so a level of anonymity in the pole space is actually very appreciated.

That being said, it’s at a studio and my name/face isn’t being advertised. I anticipate making a pole insta in the future so the stage name works for that, but even more so having a stage name would match my duo partner who is using one. But also I know strippers in this sub have taken issue with pole performers using names so I don’t know if I’m crossing a line here?

If a stage name is appropriate: I’m thinking Carmilla? I’m a goth woman so the seductive vampirism fits the vibe :)

So I competed in the Erotic style last week in Exotic Generation (yay my first award in a pro level ❤️) and since I can't really post most of my choreography I wanted to share my fun stripping of my shorts cause tbh it just took a lot of exploration to find a pathway where I didn't just get tangled in them 😅

Gym conditioning with neck problems

Disclaimer: I am not asking for medical advice

Anyone here a pole dancer with chronic neck/spine issues that also goes to the gym?

I am kinda overwhelmed by all the gym equipment and don't really know which exercises would be best for me. I know the rational answer would be to hire a trainer, but moneyyyy and also trainers in my area don't really know about pole dancing. I only have experience with home strength training and physical therapy, which is not much.

So if anyone is in a similar situation as me or has been in the past, feel free to share which exercises helped you and translated well to pole. Or in general, if you love the gym and pole, help a girl out about which upper body day is great for us dancers. :)

Pole Rookie Three weeks of classes down!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Last night was my second out of the 5 lesson block I’m currently doing, did a test class first, which will end with me having done a proper routine. I’m extremely proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone to do this and it’s been so good for my mental health. I’m looking for any advice for things I can do at the gym that’ll translate to helping on the pole as well as if anyone has tips for dealing with bruising. I’ve always bruised easily but today the results of practicing firemen is evident in the dark purple bruising where I hold the pole. TIA 💖

Stuck for photoshoot ideas

I’m doing my first photoshoot next month and I’m stuck for ideas

I’m upper intermediate, lots of strength and zero flexibility unfortunately (eg fairly strong Ayesha but really struggle with ballerina, and my jade “split” is only a slight V), and I have no idea what looks cute in photos

So far I’d like to do Superman and Archer but I need some more inspiration

Please send ideas and cute inspo pictures for your favourite non-flexy moves

Pole Rookie Pole without dance background/co-ordination?

I started pole around 2 years back after dreaming about doing it for years. I loved the experience so so much but I felt really discouraged and disappointed in myself for not being able to keep up with the class.

I don't have any background in dance, as the rest of my class did, and I wasn't particularly strong, combined with pretty garbage co-ordination... I couldn't complete the flows that they were practicing together. I joined a beginner's class, and the instructor would want to film each flow at the end of the class for her Instagram page. I was so ashamed of how clumsy I was that I ended up being the only one not consenting to being filmed, and after being pressured a few times to agree, I ended up leaving the class all together.

I only did pole for a few months but I really enjoyed it, despite how bad my co-ordination skills are/were.

I have been wanting to take up pole again but I am so embarrassed of my poor co-ordination and general shitty dance abilities.

Can anyone please give me some advice on skills I can build before/in between classes? I would love to take up pole again and be able to keep up instead of feeling confused and embarrassed.

Regression after a fall

Hello, I'm looking for any tips or advice on how to regain my confidence.

I took a small fall at the start of this year and ever since then I've become very fearful of going upside down. The fall happened because I panicked while in Butterfly (it felt off balance) and tried to get out of it fast, went into a crucifix and fell and hit my face. There was a crash mat, my body landed on it but my face landed on the floor. This happened in January and I feel like I keep regressing since then.

It is becoming very demoralising. The sensation of being upside down scares me a lot when it didn't before the fall. I am also hardly able to get my Butterfly back and even when my instructor is trying to help me, I'm resisting it. I also lost my ability to invert properly.

Because of my fear, I'm also tensing up a lot which impedes my ability to do any trick properly.

It's gotten to a point where I wonder if I should just give up on the tricks class. I have cried so many times in class at this point. I've only been doing pole for about 1.5 years so far.

If anyone has any tips or similar experience on how to overcome this, please help. :(

Thank you.

Open pole etiquette?

Hey all, I’m fairly new to pole and I have pretty bad social anxiety, which I feel is really holding me back from improving because going to self-practice by booking a pole is incredibly scary for me.

I have so many questions about the etiquette of it all.

  1. Music: When there are multiple people in the studio all practising different things, who gets control of the speaker? The first one to arrive? What about the people that arrive after? Do they practise in headphones? Do people share the speaker?
  2. Practising with strangers: I feel really shy if I’m not in a class with an instructor, and I have to practise by myself and someone else is around. I just don’t know what to do with myself when there’s no one to observe and correct me and dictate the flow of the session.
  3. Learning via online classes/videos: how do people do this, especially choreography, and with others around? Do you just sit in the studio and watch the video lessons on your device and follow?

I don’t have the capacity for a home pole right now. And if I do go for open pole sessions, I end up booking an entire (small) studio so I can be by myself and really focus.

Sorry if this all sounds so stupid. My mental health issues have been making life difficult for years now, but I’m really trying to get out of my comfort zone and learn new things.

I know people will respond and tell me everyone is too focused on themselves and their own practice to notice or judge, but I can’t help my own anxiety even when I know that 😭

Thanks in advance!
