community project update Plant Project Archive

Hello fellow plant breeders!

This post is being made with the purpose of compiling and archiving all past, present, and future posts regarding all of your plant breeding experiments, projects, research, etc.

I don't necessarily want/have the time to do it all myself, so I am humbly requesting all of your participation in this project.

The goal, simply respond to this stickied post with the name of your project, followed by a chronological list of links to all your previous posts on said project (and continue to add links for any future updates made to said project)

It will take some time, but I'm going to try and organize my own list now for my own personal projects for everyone to be able to access and see my progress.

How hard would it be to get rubusoside into rubus chingii fruits.

The plant Rubus Chingii also sometimes referred to as Chinese Blackberry produces a chemical called rubusoside in its leaves and I'm wondering with the fact the Rubus plants can hybridize not to difficultly would it be possible with some weird mix of hybridization and mutagen breeding to get rubusoside into its fruits.

Only two years old, I’m seriously shocked by this. I posted about them on this thread 93 days ago. The first one is A. ‘Lizard lips’ x castilloniae and the second is ‘lizard lips’ x ‘rooikappie’ from the same mother plant.

I hope I inspire others to try breeding aloes, it’s pretty easy to do and the potential is insane!

Bred these a few summers ago. I now have the F1 and F2 seeds, but haven’t gotten a chance to experiment more with them this past growing season.

Im aware its not the most desirable look so i personally plan to breed it out further but curious as to if this is what breeders look for? Like would this technically be a success as the pups now also mimic the mothers ‘ difference ‘ ? Btw this is a pup off my first pulled ‘ oddity ‘ from my gen1 batch of seed grown spider plants and ive never bred before this random obsession 🤣 so i just dont know much

community project proposal Looking to buy Rubus pedatus and Rubus lasiococcus seeds

Hi! I’m looking to buy Rubus pedatus and Rubus lasiococcus seeds for an experimental breeding project involving Arctic raspberry (Rubus arcticus), which I already grow. I’m interested in exploring whether crosses and changes in ploidy could produce new berries with interesting flavours, partly inspired by research into cloudberry’s possible ancestry.

• Rubus pedatus — five-leaved bramble / strawberry-leaf raspberry

• Rubus lasiococcus — roughfruit berry / dwarf bramble

Does anyone grow either species and have spare seeds, or know a nursery or collector who sells them? I’m interested in seeds only, and I’d happily pay for them and cover postage.

Even a small quantity would be appreciated.
Seeds from cultivated plants or collected wild seeds would both interest me.

A photo of the parent plant and the collection date would be helpful.

If you don’t have any now but might have seeds next season, I’d still love to hear from you!

Please comment or message me if you can help. Thanks!

Breeding a black nightshade with large fruits

Hey everyone,

I'd like to share with you an update of a project that I've been working on for a while - breeding a black nightshade with large fruits.

I've been growing edible Solanum nigrum that I found in the wild near my home and I do like the taste a lot, it's quite refreshing.

But, in my opinion, it has two problems that prevent it from being cultivated as a fruit plant: the fruit is quite small and easily breaks inbetween your fingers when harvested.

So I decided to domesticate it by crossing it with the garden huckleberry (Solanum scabrum) and then selecting for the best plants out of the bunch.

Solanum scabrum has exactly what I want from a black nightshade except the taste - it's largely tasteless, if not bitter, when raw (though not poisonous).

I decided to create a blog site where I'll document my progress on not only this project but other Solanaceae breeding experiments as well.

https://blog.solyx-labs.com/posts/5-breeding-a-black-nightshade-with-large-fruits-part-2

I would love to hear what do you think about this.

Thanks!
Jan

FLAVOR AND SWEETNESS

Genetics, soil, or additives?

GENETICS- Which do you perfer and if your willing provide a source.

SOIL- what is your perfered method including fermentation and teas. Please NO Buy in bag. I know it's a good foundation, but I m interested in long term.

ADITIVES- INTERESTED in all the wives tales as long as they a personally tried and true.

IF you believe in all I would love to see your calendar that tells all ( when, where, why and all the in between)

-LS

P.s. - Love each and every one of you. YOU have taught me so much, made me laugh, changed my mind, and continue to lead me in the best path!

question Has anyone ever grown seedlings from Cercis canadensis ‘Floating Clouds’?

I’m specifically interested in the offspring, rather than trying to reproduce the cultivar true-to-type. I know that named cultivars are normally propagated vegetatively and that seedlings can be (and most of the time are) quite different from the parent.

I’m asking because I am a very non-professional enthusiast and I have previously grown them from seed and I came across a scientific paper, which actually included Floating Clouds in controlled crosses to investigate its white/green leaf variegation. The authors crossed ‘Floating Clouds’ with several other cultivars, including ‘Covey’, ‘Texas White’ and ‘The Rising Sun’, and concluded that the variegation in ‘Floating Clouds’ appeared to be controlled by cytoplasmic factors.

That made me really curious about what happens with open-pollinated seeds from Floating Clouds. Has anyone here actually collected and grown them?

I’d especially love to hear whether the seedlings showed any variegation, unusual leaf coloration, or other interesting foliage traits — even if they were very different from the parent. Photos of young seedlings would be particularly interesting.

And if anyone happens to have access to seeds from a confirmed ‘Floating Clouds’ tree, I’d definitely be interested in trying some myself.

Wondering if this is the result of cross pollination and if the seed coloring will be stable?

I just thought I would mention that I have now posted my 2026 Report on the Potato Onion Resurrection project. This report (I issue one every year) details the progress of the project. Perhaps it might be of interest to some of the members of this group.
