Advice and questions Proposal Logistics

Howdy, I'm not from the UK but have grown up with a love for pride and prejudice. As an adult now, I want to propose to my now girlfriend at Keira Knightley rock. I'm running in to some core issues and need some advice from locals.

  1. We will be riding the train in from Manchester Piccadilly station. From there though, I don't know how I would get to the car park for Stanage Edge. I see two options Penny's and Veezu. I'm not familiar with either and I saw that Penny herself retired. If anyone has any opinions or advice for transportation please let me know. I'm even willing to pay for someone willing to drive us.

  2. I need a photographer to recreate the shot of the proposal. I don't need whole shoot but just a few that day, specifically that shot and any couple she may want after. If yall know any local photographers please recommend me.

thanks yall

I’ve been scrambling with my kids around the Peak District since they could walk, but we tried a new area around Dovestones Reservoir. We also had a very engaging scramble up Birchen Clough that was GREAT fun. It has an extra special atmosphere when the autumn sun drops low in the sky.

I do not think I will ever get board of the Peaks.

Advice and questions Best areas to live

Hi Everyone,

I'm originally from Chesterfield (Walton area) but have been living in Australia for the last 9 years. I am moving back to the UK next year and we are looking at the Peak District as a potential area. I love the area from growing up here but I was looking for some advice on the best places to look to buy. We could afford around the £350,000 mark, probably not much more than that. We're looking for a small town/village that has at least a shop and a pub and walks on the doorstep. We're not too fussy where abouts in the Peaks but would be ideal if it was commutable to either Sheffield, Chesterfield or Manchester for my husband's work. He doesn't have a job yet but works in manufacturing so would need to be close to a town or city that had that sort of thing.

Any recommendations on places to look? I can give more info if needed.

edited because I put dollars! 🙈

Advice and questions Ground conditions around the Kinder Plateau

Hi guys, I’m heading to the peaks this weekend to do the Edale skyline hike. Has anyone been up recently, especially around the kinder plateau and knows what the ground conditions are? How boggy it is if you stick to the main edge path. OS maps has a notification saying it’s impassable due to boggy/muddy conditions (by the fords near Grindsbrook Clough & woolpacks), but not sure if it really is impassable or someone who doesn’t want to get their boots dirty. I’m an experienced hiker, but I will be on my own and would rather not take risks if its deep bog. TIA.

Recommendations for White Peak walks

I've just a booked a few days in the Peaks next week and trying to make plans. I've done a lot of walks in the Black Dark Peak area in the past, but virtually nothing in the White. Any recommendations for interesting walks there? Happy for them to be reasonably long and/or strenuous. Thanks in advance.

Edit: thanks for all the suggestions.

Really busy out there today with the decent weather. I had a walk up Winn Hill then dropped down into Bamford and went up to Bamford Edge. Some right nutters in the road. Reminded me why starting early and leaving early is so much better.

How are these strips made?

Post image

I see these rectangular strips cut in a checkerboard pattern all over the moors in the peaks, when walking around I assumed that they would have to be cut by helicopter, given the scale and size.

I picture a helicopter dangling some sort of horizontal cutting device that trims the brush down, but if I’m wrong somebody please please correct me! I’m dying to know!!

Places to paddle board

Hi, I own a paddle board so I don't need a place that rents them. I just want to know which lakes I won't get in trouble for launching a SUP on my own. I usually go to NWales or the Lakes District, so I would like to know some spots in the peaks since its closer to where I live

Much appreciated

White Peak Way - South

Hello!

My gf and I (both 40) are going to do the White Peak Way South section. Her first time to the UK. Going to use a walking holiday company just for peace of mind for this first overseas a trek of ours.

Would it be worth an extra night along the way to see anything specific?

Bakewell to Youlgreave
Youlgreave to Biggin
Biggin to Thorpe
Thorpe to Hartigan
Hartigan to Buxton

Biggin involves a transfer from trail to lodging. Then the reverse in morning. Which means lodging more than a mile from trail. Haven’t booked yet so don’t know details.

NCN62 (transpenine cycleway) to Ladybower Resevoir (with bike)

Post image
5 Upvotes

I'm planning a bikepacking route for next year, and plan on taking the ncn62 (1 on map), but i want to start coming south to the Peak District and join the path at Derwent Resevoir (around slippery stones).

Now i know there is bridleway (Cut Gate Path) from Slippery Stones to Near Stocksbridge, to the East, and bridleway back, but i have been warned this it pretty much MTB only (i'll be on a gravelbike, a fairly heavy gravelbike at that)

Is it possible to hike-a-bike a more direct footpath to where i want to go?

or can anyone comment on the Cut Gate path?

We had a great time for two very inexperienced walkers! A good mix of flat, rocky, muddy, and a little bit of a climb if your balance is shit like mine lol

Where do Gritstone and Limestone meet?

Hi all, after a lifetime of living next to, and enjoying, the Peak District I've always wondered if there's anywhere that I can see Limestone touching Gritstone. I don't mean a wall made of both, or anything artificial, but somewhere the natural bedrocks meet. There are, of course, pockets of Gritstone in the White Peak, and vice versa, but I've never seen both in close proximity. For example, Calver seems like a potential location as it's in-between Froggat (Gritstone) and Stoney (limestone) but even there I've not seen both together. If they don't exactly touch, where do they poke out of the ground the closest to each other? I'd be really interested to know. Thanks.

Edit: thanks to people's enlightening responses I now know that it is very unlikely to be a place where they naturally touch. My aim has now changed to finding the point at which grit and lime are exposed together. The leading places so far are down from the Barrel in Breton, Matlock and behind the curry house in Stoney. I'm still interested to know if there's anywhere where the two rocks are closer than 'tennis ball throwing distance '. Thanks everyone for your help.

At the end of August I finally made it out to Kinder Scout for a day in nature, and honestly, what a lovely surprise. The landscapes were absolutely beautiful, and I really enjoyed the walk.

I’ve only just started exploring the Peak District, but I’m definitely planning to visit a lot more. Already looking forward to the next one! 🌿
