Build Help / Purchase Advice Pc to play modded Minecraft Java and games like the Sims

Hello,

A friend of mine wants a pc to play modded Minecraft. We were wondering if its better to buy a small prebuild like the GMKtec NucBox M5S Mini PC AMD Ryzen 3 5400U (4C/8T up to 4GHz) 16GB + 256GB

OR

Build a custom pc. If building a custom pc is the better option, what parts should we buy? She isn't really much of a gamer and will mostly play light games.

Essentially would it be more bang for buck to buy a prebuild for modded Minecraft or build a custom pc.

Thank you all for your help.

Custom is nearly always cheaper. What's your budget?

Also modded Minecraft can be get really get really heavy, so it depends on what specifically she plays and how much she spends in each world. For example trying to play through a multi hundred hour modpack, like Meatballcraft or GTNH most midrange PCs will start struggling when approaching 300+ hours, except if you know how to optimize your base for performance. Also if she wants to play with any decent shaders + mods, you will almost definetly need a dedicated GPU.

Thanks for the info. Budget is $600. Mods now are just performance and quality of life mods. Im not sure if she plans to heavily mod it in the future.

For a new computer, $600 is not much. But you can definitely get something good used. I can't give you any specific recommendations, but you should look for something with at least 16GB of DDR4 ram, an Intel 12400-14400 or better / Amd 3500 or better CPU and any GPU(you'll most likely find PCs with a Nvidia gtx 1060, 1660, 1650 or AMD rx580, which will all be good enough)

Unless you want to be limited to small modpacks, you'll get a dedicated gpu and 32gb ram. Modded Minecraft was the reason I was forced to upgrade to 32gb 5 years ago. Game wouldn't even launch with the modpack I picked out
