News/Article The PS5 system itself is running on pc

Recently, we have seen massive developments in PS5 emulators (such as shadPS4 and Kyty), and how rapidly they have progressed in a short period.

Now, developers have successfully booted the actual PS5 system software on PC.

If this momentum continues in the future, it will eventually allow players to run PS5 exclusives directly on PC, marking the end of the era of console exclusivity.

Sleep or money because this must be costing a ton in tokens to develop

You can get quite a lot of tokens for e.g. the price of a single ship in Star Citizen...

Yeah they already said it must be costing a ton.

Local models have gotten shockingly good. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out they’re using Qwen or GLM or something similar, in which case they’d only be paying for the initial hardware and on-going electric utility costs.

Any reason why you mention local models instead of the much much much more likely scenario where they used a cloud model?

Also, way to bury the lede. "Just the hardware cost" means at least $10K for a good local model.

Because cloud models cost money/tokens and their comment was a response to the expense of those tokens. Can you read?

“Frontier” models that are full of refusals? The “inferior” abliterated local models, for certain tasks like reverse engineering, can be considerably more useful.

I reverse engineered portions of apps (for uh, personal education) with deepseek flash for cents. A few hours and less than a dollar for the complete project.

$200/mo Claude Max 20x sub is actually difficult to exhaust.

The real motivation

Do you honestly believe this would run GTA 6 on day 1?

Not as it stands today no. I have to imagine there will be people using AI frontier models working on it as soon as they get a full copy of the game though.

Day 1 no. A couple days or weeks after they have a full game directory, yes.

Every PS5 digital download and game license is heavily encrypted via Sony’s hypervisor and secure enclave hardware:

  • Per-Console Entitlement Checks: When you download or boot a digital game, the PS5's AMD custom hardware chip verifies digital signatures against Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN) servers.

  • No Unsigned Code: Even if someone dumps the raw encrypted PKG (package) files of GTA 6 online, the files are useless without the specific per account decryption keys that Sony's servers release during purchase verification.

You know they already have working PS5 emulators right?

Yes and none of them support the firmware 14.10, which is what GTA 6 will require as a minimum.

How would the emulators get round this?

Did you watch the video I sent you? They don’t even need an emulator they will decompile it with AI and just rebuild it for PC using the source code.

That video completely lied to you. That's just not how game dev, decompiling, or AI actually works.

A few reasons why this is a total pipe dream:

  • Decompiling isn't magic: You can't just feed raw game binaries into AI and get clean source code back out. Decompiling compiled code leaves you with a mess of unreadable assembly with zero variable names, comments, or actual structure. AI can help reverse engineer small functions, but GTA 6 runs on RAGE and has tens of millions of lines of custom C++ code. AI isn't rebuilding that.

  • Sony's encryption stops you at step zero: To even get the game files, you'd have to dump the PS5 disc or digital download. The PS5 runs hardware-level encryption (AMD PlayStation Security Processor and hypervisors). PS5 security hasn't been cracked on current firmware, meaning nobody can even extract the raw, encrypted game files to begin with.

  • Code isn't the whole game: Games are mostly assets, 3D models, custom shader graphs, animation rigs, textures, and audio stored in proprietary formats. You can't "decompile" a proprietary binary asset into something usable with AI.

  • You still need a PC engine: Porting a console game to PC means completely rewriting how the game talks to your hardware (DirectX/Vulkan rendering, memory allocation, Windows input/threads). It takes massive studios years to port games even when they have the source code. AI isn't converting a PS5-native engine to Windows overnight.

If AI could just magically decompile and port giant AAA games on day one, we'd have been playing native PC ports of Bloodborne and Demon's Souls years ago.

Where are you pulling this information from?

Nothing to do with LLMs

That + PS5 is practically a PC in hardware terms already + motivation from Sony's recent actions.
