News/Article The PS5 system itself is running on pc

Recently, we have seen massive developments in PS5 emulators (such as shadPS4 and Kyty), and how rapidly they have progressed in a short period.

Now, developers have successfully booted the actual PS5 system software on PC.

If this momentum continues in the future, it will eventually allow players to run PS5 exclusives directly on PC, marking the end of the era of console exclusivity.

Sony to their customers mere weeks ago "Customers have to get used to not owning their purchases"

Customers to Sony "Get used to not owning your software, cunts"

Well done Devs! This is a huge win for the community.

While I greatly appriciate what's happening, the real deal isn't just not owning the game, but how games are more and more tied into the internet and besides seeing companies like Sony giving the customers the with property rights, they also pull online servers.

There should be laws against all that bullshit, bought is bought, you own it. Same time when a company decides to stop supporting a game, it should become public domain. Just dump the whole shit online and let "us" figure out how to get servers to run again. If they aren't willing to run a server that costs nada, than let the users do so.

52

u/Azntigerlion 8d ago

Right on target.

If you have ever pre-downloaded a game to play on release, the reason you can't activate it before the date is because the game is pinging the server for a key that isn't available until release.

This can easily be twisted into a scenario where every instance of the game needs a unique key tied to your account that is pinged periodically. If/when servers go down, it's over for everyone.

I will never drop the "Why does your single player game need to be online?" question

6

u/N3rdr4g3 8d ago

The latest advancements are less emulation and more decompilation. The more recent tools can recreate source code that compiles to identical binaries. If you have the source code or equivalent source code, you can edit it to remove any server checks.

They could try to make it harder to get the full compiled executable by requiring you stream it from the cloud, but in order to do that they'd need a client that knows how to pull the binary from the cloud.

You could then decompile the client, see how it's pulling from the cloud, make a custom client that looks identical to the server, then pull the full game, decompile it, edit it, etc.

Cue Microsoft. That was literally what the whole Xbone controversy was. They walked it back but it was too late.

That said, this is about piracy. It’s always about piracy, let’s not be ridiculous.

5

u/Azntigerlion 8d ago

Piracy is a reaction to anti-consumer BS.

Piracy has always been an option. PlayStation (previously) and Steam are still monumental successes simply because they are (were) the easier, more convenient, and ethical options.

When PlayStation (current) starts doing anti-consumer BS, then piracy is a fine response.

If they unethically decide that when you buy you don't own, then the public can decide to unethically bypass your system.

Fight fire with fire. Vote with your wallet.

I grew up with Limewire and I can easily pirate music nowadays, yet I just stream it because of cost&convenience

u/Odd_Hospital9554 6d ago

how do I get my jump Force back with all my players got to pay for it LOL dead ass serious tho but get somebody answer that question for me at least

14

u/BoredCollegeGuy1337 8d ago

It's mind blowing how little you actually "own" of Gran Turismo 7. Despite the majority of the content being geared towards single player races, it gets completely walled behind servers, if you try to play the game offline you get access to only a tiny handful of cars and maybe 5% of the "single player" content.

1

u/T00THRE4PER 2d ago

This is probably planned to eventually make servers on tons of old games obsolete though so they can push more sales for newer games and consoles though id assume.

212

u/Justinasz 8d ago

Indeed, but how long will it take for Sony to find out who these devs are and sue them for copyright and all that? I am all for this progress, but I am not putting too much hope in it, as legal actions will be taken once everything starts becoming too good.

If its on GitHub, it wont matter, and anybody can now use the same tools to decompile and do what they did. It's an unprecedented time.

89

u/GimmeSomeSugar 8d ago

Really? I've heard it's actually really easy to remove content from the internet after it's been widely distributed...

8

u/naivety_is_innocence 8d ago

I understand the trick is to draw lots of attention to it. That way, the entire population knows exactly what NOT to look at

28

u/Misery_Division 8d ago

Sorry I'm a bit clueless, why won't it matter if it's on GitHub?

And how come GitHub allows what is more or less cracked software to be posted?

109

u/Dvelasquera171 8d ago

The software on GitHub is neither cracked nor copyrighted by Sony.

Think of GitHub as a toolbox, the code inside it as the tools and manuals. Then think of the PS5 software and firmware as a piece of wood you get from somewhere else. There is nothing in that toolbox that belongs to Sony.

19

u/Misery_Division 8d ago

But isn't the ps5 software code literally Sonys property? I'm sure I'm missing something, just can't figure out what

59

u/National_Airline1 8d ago

Think like this for emulation you need 2 steps

1 the game 2 the machine

The game is completely illegal to copy But the mschine itself its not a ps5 it doesnt use ps5 code but it can run ps5 games but as long as it doesnt have SONY owned code its a grey legal zone since Nintendo did got his way with enougth money one time.

Its "on you" to get the game files.

9

u/HeyItzEman Ryzen 7 5800x, RTX 3080, 16 GB 3200MHz RAM 8d ago

Oh is the way this becomes wide spread for emulating any ps5 game that people “obtain the game files” aka pirates them?

-2

u/punchanaziisethical 8d ago

Won't even need to pirate, thats the beauty of it dropping on GitHub and becoming open source. You dont need to pirate current games you emulate, they're all widely available on Google. You may need a little technical know-how currently but in the near future could be as simple as emulating a ps2 game is now. You download the emulator and you download the rom/iso. Plug and play baby.

6

u/ThisHatRightHere 8d ago

Just so you’re aware, downloading a rom without having purchased a license for the game previous is pirating.

2

u/HeyItzEman Ryzen 7 5800x, RTX 3080, 16 GB 3200MHz RAM 8d ago

I’m confused. If I wanted to emulate ghost of yotei for example, you’re saying I wouldn’t need to pirate to obtain the game files even though the game costs money?

→ More replies (0)

2

u/Paralystic 8d ago

So are you saying they recreated Sonys software system with ai? Is that how emulators work? Theyre just homegrown software systems made to work like the original?

0

u/ThisHatRightHere 8d ago

From a legal perspective, at least in the US, this isn't really the case.

2

u/National_Airline1 8d ago

Then what happened to bleem! ? They won the legal battle but got thrown into bankrupt because of the insane amount of fees.

3

u/Dvelasquera171 8d ago

Yes but like I said, the PS5 code is the thing you "get from somewhere else". Sony can't sue the toolbox.

i think you can download the updates from sony, and that has the firmware, which is what you need anyway

or at least that would be one idea of how to get it

1

u/Commentator-X 8d ago

It's not Sony's code on GitHub, it's unique code that is capable of interacting with Sonys code. And it's on GitHub so anyone can download the code.

1

u/CLow48 8d ago

Reverse engineering tools are not illegal, reverse engineering copyrighted software is.

Think of it like a gun. A gun alone can be very legal, a gun used for nefarious purposes is illegal.

The person who made the tool to do the thing is equivalent to a gun manufacturer in this scenario. Github is a gun store.

Nothing in the tooling is owned by playstation, and if generic enough it can be said that its not intentionally built for defrauding Sony.

The same way that browsing pirate bay is legal, and even many torrents from there are legal, but if you use it a certain way, thats illegal for only you and the people distributing illegal material.

If this dev was also dropping the raw PS5 OS, with the tool to crack it open, that would likely be illegal.

72

u/ghost3012 8d ago

Because they’re not posting cracked software? Its a legitimate emulation software. Until you use the emulator to emulate a game that you don’t own or isn’t released for the platform, you’re not doing anything illegal

2

u/Dapper_Woodpecker621 8d ago

I just went and downloaded it; it's sitting on my desktop in a folder named “Sony Big Mad”. I probably won't do anything with it, but I could if I wanted to and that's what matters.

2

u/ARCHISMAN- 8d ago

Which repo?

1

u/gigglefarting 8d ago

What if I told you that disseminating software via GitHub is still disseminating software, and the person doing it could still get in trouble

Might be impossible to take it out of circulation once people start getting it, but not impossible to get the person who hosted it in trouble

30

u/topdangle 8d ago

emulation isn't illegal in many areas (maybe everywhere), including the US.

sony got a private emulation company fined for shipping proprietary firmware, though if they had enough money they would've survived (bleem!). nintendo got people to settle to avoid lawyer fees. nobody has managed to create a winning legal argument against emulation in general, though.

2

u/Dasheek 8d ago

In US they use law that prohibits circumventing digital locks. So if something is encrypted by Sony and you crack it you are technically committing a crime.

5

u/topdangle 8d ago

emulation doesn't require circumventing DRM. if there is DRM locking the content down, its on the user to circumvent that or provide a legal key (such as the original disk/firmware/production keys). that is another of the many reasons sony and nintendo keep losing cases against emulation when people actually take them to court.

to reiterate, sony and nintendo have only LOST cases that have made it through the system, both in US and Japan. they have never won a case against emulation, only scared people into stopping development to avoid legal fees.

Look up the most famous emulation court case in history before you say that.

1

u/YOUR__LEADER 8d ago

There's no crime to prosecute for here. Emulation is perfectly legal. As long as they don't distribute any Sony software, they're good.

1

u/Trick2056 i5-11400f | RX 6700XT | 32gb 3200mhz 8d ago

once they properly decompiled and reverse engineered its pretty much gonna end up like Ryujinx where it was pretty much legal that Nintendo had to pay off the lead dev to stop the development

3

u/mut1n3y 8d ago

That's pretty much the exact same time line as when they removed Linux from I think the ps3.
It was un jailbroken for like a year and half, then boom less than a month after Linux was removed it was jailbroken.

u/matti-san 8d ago

Sony to their customers mere weeks ago "Customers have to get used to not owning their purchases"

Unless you choose to pirate everything, what argument are we making right now? This is the exact same situation Valve puts Steam players in. The vast, vast majority of games are sold with DRM on Steam and are technically no more than licenses either.

Like do we have a moral argument to make or are we just biased here?

29

u/Skwalou 8d ago

I see this argument thrown around but it's missing a crucial point in that console games are tied to specific (and closed-off) hardware and OS ecosystems entirely controlled by one corporation.
Steam on the other hand is not tied to specific hardware and, sure they could decide to self-destruct and close Steam, in which case I'd say it'd be a good time to sail the high seas, but should a game on Steam not be compatible with a specific OS or hardware, it's much easier for the community to mod it to be (see what Proton did for Linux for example) without even risking getting banned by Valve (unless it's a multiplayer game I guess).

Preservation of digital games is also much easier on a PC than a console (good luck extracting the game files of a game sold only through a digital storefront on an OS entirely closed-off and controlled by one entity).

1

u/matti-san 8d ago

That's a fair point that you make, but that's not the point the person I responded to made.

Sony to their customers mere weeks ago "Customers have to get used to not owning their purchases"

They specifically said it was about software licenses

8

u/PurbulentTriest 8d ago

And it doesn't have to be.

2

u/lombax165 8d ago

Yes, but for the majority of games, you can choose a different store if you don't like steam (and/or the price there). So yes, we do not own a game on steam but at least for me, that comes with a significantly lower price (aka steam sale...). I would not by a license on steam for full price.

The missing competition is the far worse effect of this decision imo.

1

u/Future_Calamity 8d ago

As someone that has multiple PCs, a PS5 Pro, and a Switch 1&2, console also have great sales because those sale prices are set by the developer/publisher, not by Steam, Sony, Nintendo. The developers and publishers are the ones with all the power, the storefront is just a middleman to sells games to customers

1

u/ForensicPathology 8d ago

for the majority of games, you can choose a different store if you don't like steam

Absolutely untrue. The majority of games on Steam are only on Steam.

I feel the same way. If for some reason Steam went to shit, and started revoking licenses of games I actually want to play...I feel legally and morally obligated to pirate that game.

I paid for it, I should get to play it. Steam could at best argue that the license is for their files, since they host...but I didn't get the files from them. I purchased the game, I have a legal right to own that game. How I get the game after that shouldn't be part of the equation.

I bet this would make for a very interesting case law.

2

u/robbiekhan 🖥️ 12700KF / 64GB / Zotac 4090 / AW3225QF 8d ago

The whole whataboutisms people resort to and aim a finger at Steam as if it's somehow the same is also quite laughable. Sony has made it clear that you don't own what you buy, valve has never alluded to anything like that. The only games removed off Steam are also dodgy ones that broke the rules, meanwhile if you still had it installed and in your library then you could still play it.

There is a reason why Steam is so huge and untouchable by any other platform on PC. It does content distribution the right way and often rewards its members.

-1

u/ChongusTheSupremus 8d ago

If this was about digital ownership, people would already buy everything on GoG tho.

Also, console wise, Sony Is the most consumers friendly company out there, considering Nintendo's antics, and Xbox's past and inneficiency.

What did they do to "deserve"  this? Increase Console prices to keep up with shortaged caused by AI and the idiot's tariffs?

Before becoming increasinly Anti-consumer again, Nintendo's Switch and 3ds were already emulated.

At the end of the day people will pirate because they want to, they dont need a reason, let alone a cause.

-4

u/matti-san 8d ago edited 8d ago

I currently buy everything on Steam because it's a good product but if Gabe retires and his successor decides to enshittify or revoke licenses then I always have the option of pirating all my games and continuing to play them - an option you simply don't have on PS5 or Switch 2.

But then it begs the question, if Sony did offer an objectively shitty service, why is PlayStation so popular? Like we have to presume that PS users are happy with the service they get for the most part.

So, the argument is now - people are happy with PS (perhaps except for the move to digital), people are happy with Steam despite it only selling digital games. Both sell licenses. Neither have revoked game licenses.

Therefore, what's this all really about? The option to pirate games on PS? For which you would need a PC anyway it seems?

9

u/keyexplorer791 8d ago

PS is popular because the vast majority of PS owners don't give a fuck or know what is even happening

2

u/TPO_Ava Ryzen 7700 / RX 9070 XT 8d ago

But then it begs the question, if Sony did offer an objectively shitty service, why is PlayStation so popular? Like we have to presume that PS users are happy with the service they get for the most part.

If you want a console that plays triple A games, you don't really have an alternative. Xbox is (was? I can't even find it in stock in my local retailers anymore) more expensive and doesn't have Sony's exclusives. It's basically a more limited PC, the only upside it had going for it is Game pass but even that doesn't apply to people who have game libraries already or simply only play a few games.

But that's Sony's prerogative. In the same way any developer that releases only on PC can choose not to release their games on PlayStation? I'm sure there are many PS and console players that might like to play Tarkov, Ultrakill, Half-life Alyx, Project Zomboid, Peak, Meccha Chameleon... I could go on

u/matti-san 8d ago

Well then they can write a PC emulator for PS5 then

Will they though? Like the moral argument collapses if they don't.

I'm going to enjoy playing Demon Souls on PC when it's available. It's Sony's perogative to not sell it for PC, it's mine to play it for free anyway.

Of course it's your prerogative - you have free will. But you also cannot draw a moral equivalency either. Saying this as someone that does pirate and emulate games.

This is the exact same situation Valve puts Steam players in.

Nope, Steam does not in any way force games to use DRM, and a lot of them don't.

That's a developer choice.

2

u/ForensicPathology 8d ago

Being forced to put Valve's software on my computer to download someone else's game is DRM.

1

u/donnyb99 8d ago

But it's not. You can remove Valve's software and the game will still work just the same without it. That is definitively not DRM

0

u/ric2b Specs/Imgur Here 8d ago

If you consider that DRM, ok, but most people don't.

It's not that different from running the installer program that used to come with games on discs, conceptually. It just has a lot more features.

1

u/Bart-Harley-Jarvis- 9800x3d | 5080 | 32gb 8d ago

PC users have storefront options, console owners do not. It's not the same situation at all.

3

u/Future_Calamity 8d ago

While there are multiple storefronts, the prices are set by publishers and developers so it’s more like an illusion of options because the storefronts do not create competition when they do not set the prices.

0

u/Bart-Harley-Jarvis- 9800x3d | 5080 | 32gb 8d ago

This is only partially true. Publisher's also comply with the pricing on storefronts if they want to keep having their games made available on them, hence why publishers will still put their games on steam, despite steam taking a 30% cut.

Storefronts can also discount their own games and frequently do in order to encourage competition. This does not occur in monopolistic scenarios like consoles.

So no, it is not even remotely analogous.

1

u/Future_Calamity 8d ago

This is also not true. Game creators and owners have ultimate pricing control on digital storefronts like Steam, GoG, Epic, etc. The storefront cannot change the price of a game or discount it without their consent.

Some authorized resellers like Green Man Gaming or Humble Bundle buy keys direct from the publisher and can discount the game by eating into their own profits, which might be what you’re thinking about, but publishers can also choose not to sell keys to those key resellers.

1

u/Bart-Harley-Jarvis- 9800x3d | 5080 | 32gb 8d ago

The storefront cannot change the price of a game or discount it without their consent

True, but steam sends out "recommendations" and publishers play ball. EGS also do things like give out coupons that come from their own pocket that people can use to buy games, thus discounting purchases. GoG and EGS and AGS also gives away free games to attract customers.

You're being overly pedantic to ignore the fact that the existence of multiple sales platforms on PC means that it's not analogous to a console's monopolistic storefront. I don't know why you're deepthroating console dick so hard, but it's quite disingenuous.

1

u/GrosBraquet 8d ago

For me, the big difference is that Steam was fully digital to begin with. Whereas Consoles were physical first, then pushed digital, are now fully stopping physical, and are starting to attack the notion that you own games, even ones already purchased.

2

u/SOSpammy iMac 2017 i5-7500, Radeon 570 Pro, 32GB DDR4 8d ago

There were a bunch of disc-based games that required Steam to activate, Half-Life 2 for instance.

1

u/GrosBraquet 8d ago

Ok maybe, but I mean that was an extremely long time ago.

1

u/Future_Calamity 8d ago

And in 10 years consoles going all digital will also be “an extremely long time ago”.

1

u/GrosBraquet 7d ago

That's besides the point. We're talking about how people feel about what Sony and Microsoft are doing now. Not what people will think in 10 years.

My point is that if you bought a Playstation with the promise of physical games going on and have many of them, and with the idea that even if you bought a digital one you own it forever, this feels like absolute betrayal.

It's also questionable strategy wise, because now consoles will have less and less arguments going for them over PC gaming. The only things going for them are exclusives, and the fact that most people still won't plug their pc into their TV whereas consoles offer that convenience and compatibility. But again, now with the Steam machine for example even that is not an argument anymore because if you own some Steam games on your gaming PC, you can just get the Steam machine plugged into your TV and have the same games library.

It is a huge win, but it's also a bit terrifying.

If source code is now just a couple days of decompiling with current LLMs instead of months or years of manual decomposing, then software is effectively no longer "secure."

The security of closed source code was in the fact decompiling it was too challenging for regular people.

Now we have LLMs that fully decompile entire projects in a few days. Just look at all of these game mixer mods that decompile entire games and then mash them together. Also, I am aware of the easier "passthrough" mods, but there are straight up decompiled games imported into others as mods as well. It's how the Skate physics in MW2 worked.

But the knock-on effect that freaks me out is that if all closed source code is no longer secure, then it'll get moved to online servers. It's essentially accelerating the push to online-only game streaming because releasing the actual compiled game into the world means they're releasing the source code as well at this point.

Things are about to suck in the next couple years. It's gonna be great for companies, terrible for consumers.

1

u/Future_Calamity 8d ago

That quote was said by an Ubisoft exec back in 2024, not Sony. PlayStation sells you licenses the same way Steam does. I find it interesting the “PC community” chastising Sony for doing the exact same thing that Steam does and Steam was basically the pioneer of selling digital game licenses.

0

u/Future_Calamity 8d ago

Cmon dude….show me in that screenshot where is says “customers have to get used to not owning their games”. That is a straight quote from an Ubisoft exec a couple years ago.

You’re being disingenuous at best. Sonys quote is “reasonable consumers already understand that what they are buying is a revocable license”

I’ve purchased a lot of games on Steam and at checkout it literally says “A purchase of a digital product grants a license for the product on Steam.”

It’s literally the same thing the PlayStation Store checkout says. Ownership on Steam is the same as PlayStation, which is to say you don’t own the game, you own a license for it.

Deleted cos you finally googled what Sony said in August 2026 during the lawsuit commencing June 18? Thought so… Reddit, where uneducated people argue a point then vanish when they get proven wrong and aren’t intelligent enough to apologise or admit they didn’t know something. Sadge for you boo

Good lord you are both annoying and wrong. I deleted because I felt my reply wasn’t needed, but I guess it is.

I already quoted what they said in the court filing “reasonable consumers already know that what they are buying is a license and they wouldn’t be misled”.

I’m not saying Sony isn’t a piece of shit company, they are, but at least get your facts straight and stop gargling Steam’s balls, because they literally do the same thing. Same goes for every PC storefront including GoG where they sell you a license.

Just so you can be educated, I’ve added some links of the quote from the Ubisoft exec and what PlayStation said in their court filling

Ubisoft exec saying what you claim PlayStation said - https://www.ign.com/articles/ubisoft-exec-says-gamers-need-to-get-comfortable-not-owning-their-games-for-subscriptions-to-take-off

Sony ownership suit - https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/sony-says-reasonable-consumers-know-they-dont-own-the-digital-games-they-buy/

Edit: Awwww, look whose out here deleting their replies now 😂

Keeping physical discs isn't the real point, getting rid of invasive DRM and having actual ownership of your copy of the game is what we should be advocating for instead.

Edit: This is now my most controversial post of the month. Imagine fucking owning what you bought and paid for being controversial. Also, edited for clarity.

Their terms are exactly the same as the terms for essentially all software for the last 40 years. I thought you PC only people were more informed?
