News/Article The PS5 system itself is running on pc

Recently, we have seen massive developments in PS5 emulators (such as shadPS4 and Kyty), and how rapidly they have progressed in a short period.

Now, developers have successfully booted the actual PS5 system software on PC.

If this momentum continues in the future, it will eventually allow players to run PS5 exclusives directly on PC, marking the end of the era of console exclusivity.

Do you mean the PS5 operating system? Thus no PS5 hardware needed and no need to translate PS5 hardware calls to PC hardware calls?

u/BravestCashew 8d ago

people have already gotten Wolverine to run on PC, albeit laggy and slightly buggy, progress is being made incredibly fast

like holy, they’ve already managed to bring an AAA exclusive ps5 game to the emulator within, what, a few weeks tops?

The race to get GTA6 running on PC is going to be insane. The groundwork is already laid. The hunger is there.

Pair that with the biggest media launch in all of human history - this is NOT hyperbole - , nerds* are going to be tripping over themselves getting GTA6 emulated properly.

Three weeks. Maybe two. My guess is in less than a month, GTA6 will be playable on an emulator with a decent frame rate.

* I use this word as a term of endearment

u/TheFearOfFear 8d ago

Hopefully this pushes Rockstar to release the fucking game on PC on launch day. Like jesus christ.

39

u/Consistent-Sundae739 8d ago

They release on consoles first because they are locked down and shark card buyers are guaranteed where as PC users will have people shooting money at them day 1 meaning not as many players will buy shark cards

24

u/Revolver_Boxelot 8d ago

There's no release date for the next GTA Online yet. And every GTA game was released on console first. It couldn't possibly be about shark cards.

12

u/International_Cow_17 8d ago

It's about the tripledip. First you release oncurrent gen machines, then next gen and finally pc.

2

u/MrLeonardo i5 13600K | 32GB | RTX 4090 | 4K 144Hz HDR 8d ago

Triple dip is a drop in the bucket compared to shark cards. GTA Online weekly revenue is US$ 6.63M on PS5/Xbox Series consoles combined and a meager US$ 264k on PC according to the leaked data from early this year.

Those numbers pretty much explain Zelnick's interview to bloomberg where he mentioned VI is launching on consoles first because that's where their core audience is. It's all about prioritizing that recurring revenue.

1

u/International_Cow_17 8d ago

Hey, thats just a step 1. a).

1

u/Wookieewomble 2d ago

The tripple dipping is free money on top of the shark cards.

1

u/Consistent-Sundae739 8d ago

Yes thats also a large factor, they know once the PC build is out its game over for them with the rise of coding AI the game will be decompiled and modded day one

1

u/ShivamLH Laptop 8d ago

Yeah. It's double dip and anti-piracy primarily.

2

u/Unique_Ad9943 8d ago

They should still bring it forward current rumours of a year long delay is just bs double dipping

1

u/FlashyBee2330 8d ago

But they'll buy the game!!!

1

u/Tone_Dephf 8d ago

They said that the pc release will be around 6 months

1

u/Safe-Industry2465 8d ago

Its no about shark cards, its about double dipping, even triple dipping

Plenty of guys ozt there who will buy it on console (release), then on PC because the game comes with higher frames, 4k textures, new content etc. Then buy it again when it releases on PS6

Same thing was done with GTA5 (PS3 -> PC -> PS4)

1

u/sortalikeachinchilla 8d ago

Yeah that is not the reason. Online is not even coming out right away. Stop excusing them. There is no excuse for a company as big of them to not release on PC right away.

2

u/Sarewokki 8d ago

Jesus Christ was indeed well known for focusing on the PC market.

5

u/Same_Extension_8938 8d ago

How? I doubt they will emulate playable GTA 6 version before the end of 2027 or something like that. They need to crack new PlayStation firmware to get the files, emulate the game, optimize it so it runs without constant crashes, freezing and huge FPS drops. It will take a lot of time even with AI. And after that the game will most likely run at 30 FPS on RTX 5090 and 9800X3D

-3

u/BravestCashew 8d ago

just so you’re aware, AI/hackers have already found a way to jailbreak PS5s by simply changing your IP address in system settings to a specific one, which opens a jailbreak thing somehow, press 1-2 buttons, and you have a jailbroken ps5 that can play ps2 games among other things

On the latest version. For the first time ever. Before this, you needed to have an old ps5 that wasn’t updated because modders had to crack the newer updates every time. AI (assumedly) has made it through the latest version. Maybe they’ll be able to patch it out and keep AI out? But with the rate AI keeps improving, I don’t think that will last for long

3

u/Same_Extension_8938 8d ago

They didn't crack the latest version. Sony fixed the exploit that made possible to crack 13.60. And there will be even newer one before GTA 6 release. Yeah, i think eventually they will crack it but i don't think it will happen this year

1

u/No_Accountant3232 8d ago

Nah, that's just it. Anyone with enough to purchase the tokens will be able to decompile updates within days. We're no longer in the era of waiting weeks for a crack. We're only limited in how much compute can be thrown at it. And GTA 6 is going to have a lot of compute thrown at it. It's entirely possible it'll be bootable on PC within 24 hours and playable within a week. This is a task AI is actually competent at, and people will throw stupid amounts of money to be the first to get GTA 6 playable on PC.

-2

u/Same_Extension_8938 8d ago

Then why has no one succeeded in cracking 14.00 almost a month later? Sony (and any other big company) is using AI as well, they're not stupid. There's no way there will be a playable version of GTA 6 on PC within 24 hours. It's copium

3

u/No_Accountant3232 8d ago

I didn't say playable in 24 hours. And the why it hasn't happened yet is because GTA 6 isn't out yet. People aren't going to spend shitloads on compute for an update that doesn't exist yet, and there's no point in spending that much until the biggest game of the decade launches.

Wolverine is the proof of concept that will encourage people to spend on compute. You're a blind idiot if you can't see that.

1

u/Soylentstef 8d ago

Maybe they actually cracked it but keep it hidden until the game is released before sony can fix it again, we don't know.

ah gotcha the video I saw was 2 days old, only just now seeing the other ones talking about the patch before that

82

u/BravestCashew 8d ago

rockstar is smacking their heads on the table rn for deciding to partner with Sony/playstation lmfao

116

u/ninoski404 8d ago

Lmao I'm sure they are terrified of 0,5% population that is tech-savvy to find and run emulators, while 90% of those will but the proper game when it launches anyway

39

u/beziko 8d ago

I think it's even less than 0,5%. Not only great build you need to have but also you have to know what emulation is at all. I was suprised how many people i played games with didn't even know what is "emulator".

18

u/bs000 8d ago

4

u/roger_belmont 8d ago

Tears of the Kingdom leaked online and was pirated over a million times before it officially released. That's ~4.5% of lifetime sales pirated before launch day. Switch is much easier to emulate so it's not a perfect comparison, but far more than .5% or less

1

u/Neemzeh 8d ago

The most ironic part that nobody is talking about is that this shit is barely running using a fucking RTX 5090 lmao. Nobody is running this shit on average hardware for a while

1

u/ChropMK 8d ago

In the west emulators aren’t really that much of a concern.

But there’s tons of countries where it is, primarily third world countries since to them, it’s incredibly stupid to waste what is essentially 1/4th of your monthly salary on a video game when you can just play it for free. Piracy in these countries are rampant and encouraged.

2

u/ric2b Specs/Imgur Here 8d ago

What makes you think this will require a lot of tech-savvyness to run by the time GTA 6 launches?

1

u/ninoski404 8d ago

The fact that emulators are still extremely niche, so clearly there is a reason. Also, if it's not niche then rockstar will hunt it and going on slightly sketchy sites is also something a tiny portion of people will do.

1

u/ric2b Specs/Imgur Here 8d ago

Emulators tend to have shit performance unless you use them for old games.

If this gives you native performance it might be a very different story, especially for a game that a lot of people want to play.

8

u/BravestCashew 8d ago

PC players are definitely more tech savvy than the average console gamer by default.

at least, I’ve been laptop gaming for 11 years and now PC gaming and I can download skyrim/cyberpunk/borderlands mods, and have done stuff like create randomized saves for my iphone pokemon game, etc

Basic tech stuff from a tech person’s perspective, but about equal to this assuming the modders eventually release the emulator in an easy-to-download/run state)

Yeah the console players will mostly be legit, but the PC players, who aren’t getting this game for possibly 9 months to a full year after the console release? They’ll be starving lol, and some will buy a console, but if an easy to download, trustworthy, workable PS5 emulator releases? Floodgates opened

Like when I was in high school, everybody (not just techy people but totally random people) was downloading gba4ios on their phones. People aren’t totally unfamiliar with emulators, pc players especially

3

u/Jeff1N 8d ago

PC players are definitely more tech savvy than the average console gamer

True, I'm a software engineer and after working for 8 years 8h a day on a PC I dread using a PC at home, and actually prefer playing on consoles to not have to lose a couple of hours making a game work

14yo me would easily set up multiple N64 emulators with different plugins to get certain games to work (it took me a long time to get Paper Mario and Conker's Bad Fur Day working), or get PS2 Kingdom Hearts games working on a PC not exactly fit for PS2 emulation

...On the other hand, how many people actually have PCs powerful enough for emulating a current gen title, specially with the memory crisis?

With PS5 and Xbox being essentially modern PCs with custom firmware I imagine it would require fewer translation layers, but still you usually need a hardware reasonably more powerful than the original to emulate something

1

u/TPO_Ava Ryzen 7700 / RX 9070 XT 8d ago

Similar situation for me, I already work in front of a PC, when I have the option I don't game on my PC, I only do it for games where it's more comfortable, like League, CS2, Fortnite, etc. but for everything else I've got a steamdeck, switch 2 and ps5 that I'd be more than happy to use instead.

They're all also setup in different places, my consoles are in the living room to be used by me, my partner or guests, while my desktop is in the office for my own use only.

7

u/_dekoorc 9800X3D | 5070 Ti | 64GB DDR5-6000 CL30 8d ago

I understand that GTA6 is going to be a huge release, but I have not heard a single person talk about it outside of Reddit. I'm sure I will as the release gets closer, but floodgates will not be opened.

2

u/BravestCashew 8d ago

I mean this is why anecdotal evidence doesn’t work. They’ve already made $3 billion+ off of preorders alone (and that was in the first, what, week of preorders?), just because you don’t hear people talking about it doesn’t mean it isn’t the literal biggest singular game release potentially of all time, in terms of how many people will be buying and playing it

just to be clear i didnt preorder it but you should ask the average person who games casually what they’re looking forward to in gaming. There’s a reason why 2k and fifa make so much money, and that’s cause the casual gamers buy the crap out of them every year - the same ones who will be playing GTA6 cause it’s a casual’s favorite game series

disclaimer: not using casual as an insult, but a descriptor of people who play games but not a lot of games, rather just a few - the people who only buy the new cods, fifas, 2ks, assassins creed, and GTA games (etc). Very specific purchases that they buy 100% of the time because their friends also buy them 100% of the time (AC actually probably falling off in the casual scene though tbh)

0

u/Crumpled_Papers 8d ago

3 BILLION off preorders? That's like if a third of humanity had a preorder, including many people without electricity. But hey if that number is real that's a great stat for how big a deal this game is. I'm genuinely shocked.

1

u/Leffernan 8d ago

That's 37.5 million copies of the $80 version.

0

u/Chance_Commercial892 8d ago

Cuz its not like u can talk about it randomly like people just talk mostly online even I didn't heard it.... But the day it releases and after or few days before you will hear about it everywhere.... Its a huge game even big athletes , celebs are talking about it never saw this

1

u/ninoski404 8d ago

If emulator gets popular, it'll be hunted down by rockstar and pushed into sketchy sites, once again outside of normal people reach

1

u/Ok_Turnover_1235 8d ago

I set up no$gb for multiple people in highschool, i tried monetising the service but people just asked the people I did it for how I did it and suddenly there were hundreds of people playing pokemon at home for free.

People vastly overestimate how hard it is and it sounds like people are vastly underestimating how much effort people are willing to put in to play something everyone else is playing that they otherwise couldn't

1

u/BravestCashew 8d ago

Yeah there’s literally a youtube tutorial right now on how to jailbreak your PS5 by changing your system IP address to a specific one, then press like two buttons and boom, you now have a jailbroken PS5. For the first time ever, people can buy a new ps5 from a store, start it up fully updated to the newest version, and immediately jailbreak their console without a USB or buying an already cracked console online.

This is another new development made within the last 1-2 weeks and it’s actually kinda scary for console gamers cause it doesn’t just enable stuff like steam (yes, people/ai are/is close to running steam on ps5 apparently), but also makes cheating a lot easier

1

u/Jeff1N 8d ago

I remember seeing a jailbroken overclocked Switch OLED running a Switch emulator on a Linux ARM64 distro and even if it was visibly worse than just playing the game normally I found it funny that it actually worked

1

u/Bubbywubwub12 Ryzen 5 9600X | 5060 TI 16GB | 32 GB DDR5 8d ago

PC users are way more tech-savvy tbh. It's still a step in the right direction.

Why defend these billion dollar corps?

3

u/ninoski404 8d ago

I'm not defending them, I just don't like wishful thinking and making stupid statements to feel better. It was the same with leaks "omg rockstar will regret not releasing a trailer sooner so much!" and a month after extended look the leaks are buried and forgotten while a quadrillion videos about extended look are being pumped out just like they were going to be

1

u/SadSecurity 8d ago

"Tech-savvy" lmao

You mean downloading a launcher, downloading a game and then play it through launcher?

1

u/sortalikeachinchilla 8d ago

Not on fucking PC.

1

u/ninoski404 8d ago

You mean it doesn't launch on PC? It will in 1-2 years with a bit of a remaster and everyone will buy it regardless of whether they had a bootlegged copy for a year or not.

1

u/Wookieewomble 2d ago

Most emulators now a days dosnt take much to learn. Some are even plug and play mostly. Will only get better with time too.

9

u/sarathsps 8d ago

The most profitable thing they can do is release a pc build as early as possible

8

u/sendmebirds 8d ago

Yeah, cash cow is Online anyway

1

u/StevieMJH 8d ago

Not accounting for all the PS5s they're trying to sell as part of their deal with Sony. Probably more profitable but they're held back contractually I'm guessing.

0

u/Chance_Commercial892 8d ago

Max 5 months i think after that ps5 sales will deadass drop hard asf. Pc is definitely gonna release next year i have a strong feeling c

4

u/Jmcur 8d ago

Lmao no they're not.

2

u/BravestCashew 8d ago

well yeah obviously not they’re making billions regardless but they are probably having meetings about it

2

u/Jmcur 8d ago

Yeah I mean it's obviously not ideal for them but they've become so big it's not going to hurt them too much but yeah it's much much worse of an issue for Sony

1

u/JooAssaasin 8d ago

Nah they've probably earned a fat sum making a deal with Sony/Xbox those stolen PC builds are only gonna be used by the .1% of people who aren't/can't buy the game anyway

1

u/ip-cx 8d ago

Not really. I am 100% sure they are following the progress of the emulation scene but the people who will emulate GTA VI on PC is so marignally low...

People bought GTA V multiple times on multiple consoles / computer. It's a cash cow nonetheless.

17

u/Disastrous-Ad-1999 8d ago edited 8d ago

2-3 weeks? Lol. The only hypervisor exploit known was just patched in 4.10 by Sony. It would be miraculous if gta vi files could even be dumped in one month. Emulation of games, sure, finding exploits isn't remotely as easy or the same. If you follow the jailbreak and emulation scene people are not as hopeful after the Jordy incident.

1

u/BravestCashew 8d ago

Is this in reference to the jailbreak where you change your IP address in system settings and it opens a jailbreak window that jailbreaks your fully updated PS5?

4

u/Disastrous-Ad-1999 8d ago

That's just a method of jailbreaking, doesn't really have anything to do with what I said. And no it doesn't jailbreak your fully updated ps5. There are no jailbreak for 14.00 and above.

-6

u/Melodic-Luck-8772 8d ago

doesnt matter, someone will rip the game from the console.

if we can run the os on an emulator, someone will find a way to read the filesystem on a pc.

there are several other methods to rip a game from a console.

12

u/ithinkitslupis 8d ago edited 8d ago

...it's encrypted. You aren't just finding a way to read the filesystem and decrypt a PS5 pkg on PC because you can run decrypted parts of PS5's OS.

There really aren't several other methods. If someone wants to try one without software based dumping through a jailbreak that would be awesome, but it would also be the first confirmed time of it happening to a PS5 game.

11

u/-CODED- 8d ago

These people are just straight up talking out of their ass and getting upvoted because it sounds nice.

-8

u/Melodic-Luck-8772 8d ago edited 8d ago

welll... no. ive seen games getting ripped while playing them.

ive seen filesystems and encryption hacked.

would not wonder me if encryption keys lying around somewhere.

other than that: someone will eventually find a hardware exploit.

it just doesnt seem nice, it has to potential to happen.

well see.

with the operating system running in an emulator its possible to see which libarys the ps5 is using.
this is huge and is going to speed up progress exponentially.

3

u/Disastrous-Ad-1999 8d ago edited 8d ago

The whole point is an exploit was found, was kept secret for GTA VI, but somebody decided to report it to Sony for bounty money. There aren't just an infinite amount of exploits to find, and if there was one found, would it be reported again?

You've seen games being ripped while playing them on a non-jailbroken ps5? Yes the decryption keys are lying about somewhere. It's called the firmware.

-7

u/Melodic-Luck-8772 8d ago

i know that story. pretty bad backstab.

but hey, we will eventually find a way before gta 6 release.
its gonna happen, i have no doubt about that.

one way, or another.

I was referring mainly to shinyreddwarf and his confident timeframe.

3

u/Disastrous-Ad-1999 8d ago edited 8d ago

The whole OS isn't running in this video... This is just basically the visual interface running. What several other methods are there lol?

-4

u/ITuser999 8d ago

My bet is someone somehow makes GTA6 being playable on the 13.6 firmware and thus dumpable.

5

u/Disastrous-Ad-1999 8d ago

Amazing wizardry if they can do that without the game /s

Backporting requires the game to first be dumped which is the whole issue.

-1

u/ITuser999 8d ago

Yeah that's what I meant. Maybe you can somehow trick the store to let you download the game on the older version. Then it should be able to be dumped if there isn't any other protection on the game.

5

u/syopest Desktop 8d ago

Downloading the game isn't the problem. The files are encrypted and the keys to decrypt the files are in the firmware that's required to run it.

-1

u/ITuser999 8d ago

ah ok mb then. Makes sense that it works this way. This then makes it a lot harder if there isn't any other weakness for upcoming firmware found.

2

u/Disastrous-Ad-1999 8d ago edited 8d ago

You can download. You can't run or decrypt to dump. And if you're on 3.60 and below you can't even connect to psn.

6

u/roehnin 8d ago

6

u/xCeeTee- 8d ago

They always release their games much later for PC. GTA V didn't drop on PC for another 19 months. I think it'll be in the next holiday season if we're lucky.

1

u/kubarotfl 8d ago

Is it theoretically possible to run GTA6 or AAA console game on PC with better frame rates than on PS5?

1

u/ThrowAwayYetAgain878 8d ago

Afaik it is possible with Switch games, so if your hardware is powerful enough, I would guess so. That's just speculation, though.

1

u/skyturnedred Old & Rusty machine 8d ago

Pardon my ignorance, but wouldn't getting the Xbox version running on PC be easier?

2

u/fvck_u_spez 8d ago

The problem is that the Xbox is an incredibly secure system with no known vulnerabilities or exploits. This means that people can't break into the system to do research on how it works and reverse engineer it, nor can they dump the encrypted game somewhere. The PS5 isn't as secure of a system, and it relies on many open source components where there are known public vulnerabilities, so it is easier to write web exploits that can then privilege escalate all the way to the hypervisor and give somebody complete access to the system.

If you had the code for the Xbox game, it would be a lot easier to get it running on the PC versus the PS5 code. But without a source code leak we won't get that for a long time.

Additionally, there is more of an effort to emulate PS5 games because it has actual exclusives on it, whereas pretty much every game that comes to Xbox also comes to PC. Even if the Xbox was easy to exploit, there isn't a lot of will power or reason to get an emulator/compatibility layer set up for it.

There is no guarantee that GTA 6 will be dumped on PS5 anytime soon though, because Sony has just patched a big hypervisor exploit that was disclosed to them, and you will need a patched version of the OS to be able to download the game. That being said it seems like people are always finding new exploits for the PS5 so we will see.

1

u/-Shoebill- 8d ago

We'd need another PS5 firmware exploit after launch to dump decrypted GTA 6.

1

u/Wiseon321 8d ago

There will be no race.

This is all smoke and mirrors.

1

u/SadSecurity 8d ago

I hope GTA6 will be cracked really quickly. It would be so fucking funny.

1

u/CodeNCats 8d ago

It will be done within a week. Maybe even days.

If the people who are hacking this stay fragmented on individual paths. Maybe a few weeks.

If they instead work together while leveraging AI. This could likely be done in a few days. The desire is there. Being the first to do it is a huge cred boost. People will be working around the clock on this with agent swarms.

1

u/FantaFantastico90 8d ago

this is NOT hyperbole

bro, Star Wars The Force Awakens sold Star Wars branded oranges in it's lead up. GTA6 is big, and certainly the biggest game, but not the biggest media launch.

1

u/ShiningRedDwarf IBM 608 8d ago

Find any media release that made more than 5 billion dollars in its first week and I’ll admit I’m wrong, because that is the estimated amount Rockstar is looking to make

1

u/FantaFantastico90 8d ago

Star Wars TFA sold 110 million tickets in the US and Canada alone across it's full run. With the world-wide boxoffice being three time the US domestic, I'd say ~300 million tickets world wide. Since you account for pre-orders in the first week, I'd say this is a rough but fair comparison.

1

u/zeldor711 i5 4670k @ 4.2 GHz || GTX 1060 6GB 8d ago

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if GTA VI is part of the reason we've seen such massive strides in the last couple of months. When it actually comes out, assuming it can be dumped (not sure this is a given since there's no disc and will presumably need an updated PS5) I would not be at all surprised if it's fully playable at the original frame rate within a month. Hell, maybe the FPS cap will get broken and it'll be playable at 60fps this year. The dash to get it working will be like nothing the emulation scene has had before.

1

u/Iordbendtner 8d ago

Whatch gta getting delayed

1

u/Davictory2003 8d ago

Actually software developer here, Rockstar with the help of Sony can literally just implement a hardware check, this is not something that an emulator would be able to bypass

1

u/Neemzeh 8d ago

You’re going to need a $5000 rig to run it on PC though. You’re not getting anything optimized to run on lower hardware that quickly

So yea, spend 5k for your 5090 instead of 1k for your ps5 lol. That’ll show Sony!

1

u/fvck_u_spez 8d ago

I already have to buy it on PS5 since it isn't on PC at launch. I don't care what improvements the native PC version has, if I can uncap the framerate in a PS5 emulator then that is good enough for me. Rockstar is not gonna get me to double dip

1

u/z31 5800x3D | 4070 Ti 8d ago

You guys are really optimistic that a dump of the GTA6 game files will be available before the game actually releases on PC. Considering you need a jailbroken PS5 to dump a digital-only game and Sony just rolled out a firmware update this week to address "security fixes" I just don't see that happening.

1

u/TheWalrusPirate TrinalHydra 7d ago

Um actually I don’t care for the largest release of all time, I have shovel knight and star dew valley 🤓

1

u/Wookieewomble 2d ago

No need to port it perhaps. the recent gta 6 leaker got the dev build on pc. Said the game is playable from start to finish, inlcuding end credits. And is interested in leaking said build if his scam coin gets to a certain market cap.

Reagardless, we will see GTA 6 on PC before it's official release either through the leaked build or emulator magic no doubts.

Week 1 sales are estimated to bring in about 5 billion dollars.

With a B!

My guess for the number two spot is either Avengers Endgame or one of the Avatar movies.

It's hilarious that the "60fps or jail" crowd is excited to play the 30fps game at 2fps

u/sarathsps 8d ago

If it runs on 2fps, it'll take a month before it get's to 60 with current progress

u/no-shells 8d ago

Y'all are dreamers, I'll give you that

1

u/ITuser999 8d ago

There are cases of games where it happened. Won't bet on GTA though as this is probably optimized to the max already on the console

It's exciting because It's historically taken a decade or more for a decent emulator to come out for any console. And the PS5 is getting this level of progress after just under 6 years of it being on the market.

You're missing the part I find funny

1

u/Shaggy_One 5700x3D, 9070xt 8d ago

No I got why you think it's funny.

I don't think it's all that funny that enthusiasts are excited about a tool improving far faster than expected.

u/no-shells 8d ago

That's not what I thought was funny either tho

people have already gotten Wolverine to run on PC

Now they just need to figure out how to make input work.

Now that consoles are basically just PCs running custom operating systems it should've been a lot easier to build an "emulator" (it's more like a compatibility layer like WINE/Proton) to get stuff running. There was probably no incentive when games were coming to PC anyways. Now with all these dumb decisions from Sony and the advancements of AI, this was bound to happen. They just need to improve the performance.

AI doesn’t code people, people code people

except in this case, AI does indeed code people

people have already gotten Wolverine to run on PC, albeit laggy and slightly buggy

On console there was no problem, but I'm not sure I'd want to occupy my PC for that long while I was waiting for the game to complete itself.

This is the VSH (Visual Shell) which is the user interface for the system menu. Think XMB on the PSP/PS3, which is those system's version of VSH.

It itself is just software being emulated just like a game, although usually the VSH is especially difficult to run because it uses a bunch of system libraries and features that games usually don't use, so it's often the last thing to be emulated successfully. It's not the entire operating system, and it doesn't mean they're running the PS5 kernel directly.

Aaah ok. Thanks for the real answer

u/Neocat_ 8d ago

This would be a godsend for the modding community if so!

1

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 8d ago

How would emulating the PS5 Home Screen be a godsend over emulating the PS5 as a whole to play games?

If anything, the Home Screen is the last thing worth emulating

u/Free-Macaroon8433 8d ago

People forget that modern consoles are literally just locked-down prebuilt pcs running a custom os so the architecture isn't even that alien

PS5 has an AMD chip, so there's no much to translate. That's why this generation is being good for emulation

3

u/LickingSmegma 8d ago

The first Xbox had a Pentium in it, and dozens of devs tried the ‘not much to translate’ approach until they all grokked that the modified architecture in fact means that they need to translate.

u/jbaenaxd Macbook Air M4 | 24GB | 1TB 8d ago

Not really. The OG Xbox stalled because the custom Nvidia NV2A GPU was completely undocumented and games bypassed standard APIs to hit bare metal, not because x86 translation was hard.

Here, the CPU instructions run natively without a JIT. Projects like shadPS4 are compatibility layers (like Wine orProton) translating OS syscalls and mapping AGC to Vulkan, rather than full hardware emulation from scratch.

Xemu, by far the most successful Xbox emulator, is originally based on QEMU. Which differs from other virtual machines in that it simulates much more of the hardware instead of just translating the instructions — including simulating a CPU on a wholly different instruction set architecture.

It was a known thing back in 2010s that multiple emulators failed due to running into the Xbox differences from x86. Emulation General Wiki mentions the HLE approach tried by many, but that seems even more high-level than translation, about on par with Wine.

u/Syygnis 8d ago

I mean PCSX2 can run the PS2 bios, it's still emulation. But cool nonetheless

1

u/Episode-1022 8d ago

that would be anyps5(or something) a translation layer

1

u/aykay55 7d ago

No this is the PS5 operating system running inside of an emulator, like a virtual machine.

If you don't have PS5 hardware....... guess what needs to happen.
