I work in the card processing industry. This is so impractical from a cost stand point that it doesnt make sense. The amount of risk for a card not present transaction, not tied to a vendor with an agreement with the card brands, and ran inside of someones home with only some kind of EULA dictacting its use? What could go wrong?

I hope tysys or global whoever processes for them fucking reams them on any of these stupid ideas from a cost standpoint.

How is this different than manually typing card info into a website? I don't know anything about card processing machines but it sounds like the same thing to me.

The technology itself could feasibly be more secure. But because you're putting a card info collecting device into everyone's living room the hardware itself becomes the weak point. You have increased the surface area for attacks by several orders of magnitude. They then have to maintain this system for compliance for years. I dont even know how you would begin to certify it through PCI.

I dont see them ever being true in person transactions too - because you cant prove the cardholder themselves were the one tapping it. So you're essentially just doing it for convenience/opportunity to capture more transactions that people dont back out of but you're not saving any money on the processing side and you're spending prob billions on creating and servicing this infrastructure.
