Even if you support this, this adds to the cost of an already expensive controller.

It’s only a few cents. It’s the same as putting an amiibo reader on a Nintendo switch controller. Same tech (hell my cellphone can read amiibos and credit cards. This means amiibos are just glorified prepaid cards).

But yeah. Sony is clearly using some pretty gamer-hostile and greed-driven language here. Could’ve said it’s for some toys to life stuff like Skylanders or Disney Infinity or whatever the hell Lego calls their NFC toys. But nope, for reading credit cards. Way to anger gamers Sony.

You're getting downvoted, but it's true. An NFC reader is pennies.

However, I think you needed to point out - of all the cool potential reasons to add an NFC reader to a controller - this is not one of them.

What are some potensial reasons for NFC readers in controllers?

Toys to Life Mechanics. The most infamous reason being the amiibo, but there’s also Skylanders, Disney Infinity, Lego’s NFC toys, Hyperscan cards, and so on. Nintendo has been doing it since the Wii U. Even the Switch and Switch 2 has it on their right controller and the Pro controllers.

It can even be used for the home console ports of those card games from arcades like Pokemon Mezastar, Dragon Ball Dive, and so on. Ie you get NFC card gacha from the arcade machines.

Final cost will not be a “few cents” lol especially to the consumer
