Absolutely something that people should be angry over. They're basically just abusing intellectual property laws that were made for a very different kind of product.
Idk about your country. In mine, if that happens, or say you find someone’s cash on the ground, legally you’re supposed to go to the police and give it to them.
After that they wait for two years, if no one has claimed it, then and only then you can come back and claim it since you found it and it seemingly belonged to no one, so now it’s yours.
In practice it doesn’t happen. But legally yes, if you found what someone lost/left in the street and take it, it’s stealing
Do we really need to keep every single game ever made alive for historical reasons? Sure there have been made a lot of great games that have shaped other games and changed the way of gaming, but there's also a lot of games that are just nearly literal clones of other games that wouldn't add significant value to the history of games.
What do you even think "Stop Killing Games" is about?
See this is how I know that the whole thing is based on misinformation and memes.
This has nothing to do with "games being taken away from you", it is only about games that require a company to spend money and run servers and pay people to maintain them to keep a live-service online game functional.
The demands of "stop killing games" are for the government to force companies to keep providing those services for free forever to everyone who paid them for access to it even once, even if fewer than 100 people total have used the service in question for five years in a row, as was the case with The Crew, the game that started this absurdity.
not quite. the demand is to keep the game playable (not kill it, it's in the name). it doesn't matter if it's maintaining a server or giving the option for private servers.
Stop killing demands that online games remain playable even if the Server shuts down. There are tons of games that have singld player and dont need a server to run but do run over an online server anyway. That are the most agreages ones.
Anthem is an example of that. That game eorks completely fine in singleplayer but you cant play it anymore because you need to run the game over the servers, which were shut down.
I’d say it’s safe to assume that every single online game will eventually become unplayable at some point in the future.
Hell, I’d say this about any game because I have a suspicion that Windows 28 isn’t going to work well with a game developed around Windows 10. There will eventually be straight up compatibility issues
What point? That devs need better DRM? Why the fuck are you playing games made by companies you hate? Spend your time and money of games made by developers thay agree with you.
Your point was that you should pirate games you don't want to support. How about just not support them financially as well as not showing them that their games are popular by driving up piracy numbers. Just don't play them. Pirating them just shows that their games are still good enough that people want to play them.
Full disclosure I had partially forgotten what the topic was when I responded.
I don't personally pirate games, at least not new ones. When I said "I already do", I meant I don't buy games from companies or devs that are shitty people.
However, whether or not the game is good has nothing to do with the company half the time. There are plenty of good games made by companies I don't want to financially support, and while I don't personally pirate, I'm at the point where if someone's gonna play the game regardless I'd rather they NOT support the shitty devs and/or company.
Actually this isn’t true, in the case of MMOs, private servers make the game work. In the case of always online, it can be hacked to fix that, just talk to EA and their sim city debacle.
it also wouldn't be the case is stop killing games was passed as a law, you can't force developers to maintain and moderate servers forever because it has a cost. the proposal was to give people the tools to self host those games after the EoL date was reached and servers taken down
Ehm.... yes, it will. Unless it's completly hard coded into every function of the game. And even then, they will find a way. Best example for me was Just Cause 3. AFter release they had massive problems with their online servers. You couldn't play the game legimitaly because you weill get an error every few minutes "can't connect to the leaderboard servers"
The Pirated version changed the Server address so that the game wouldn't try to "call home" and you can play forever!

But piracy won’t make the game work if it needs to connect to an online server/service that is no longer active.
