Sadly they have some great talent festering away reproducing endless openworld slop (the team who made this was dismantled https://store.steampowered.com/app/2751000/Prince_of_Persia_The_Lost_Crown/ )

u/Y-Yorle Jun 17 '26

The Lost Crown is an amazing game, shame it didn't sell as well. For me it was worth the 40ish euro pricetags for the amount of time and fun I got out of it.

If you like your Metroidvania's with DMC like combat it is definitely worth picking up, especially when on discount.

u/SvenTheHorrible Jun 17 '26

Tbh, doesn’t matter how good the game is, lots of people simply won’t buy Ubisoft products anymore- myself included.

68

u/sneakyCoinshot Jun 17 '26

Ever since they ripped The Crew, which I paid for, out of my library I stopped even playing the ubisoft games I already owned. Cool as the Black Flag remake looks fuck Ubisoft.

5

u/No_Palpitation_9045 Jun 18 '26

I don't want to give ideas to anyone, but the Black flag have skull and bones in it, right? All u need is to open the drawer, take back yout dusty hat and sail the seas again.

6

u/sneakyCoinshot Jun 18 '26

Nah fuck that and fuck ubi. I'd rather spend money and time on a good game from a company that isn't shit than pirate a game from a shit company.

2

u/No_Palpitation_9045 Jun 18 '26

Well, fuck ubi, fuck acti ,fuck blizzy fuck them all indeed. But for me personally Black flag is the reason to raise the sail again.

3

u/cgebaud Jun 18 '26

I mean, if there was one game that basically invites you to pirate it...

7

u/Ceramic_Sundae Jun 17 '26

same here, over a thousand hours in division one and two. uninstalled all ubislop when their new terms and conditions were updated a few months back. put them on ignore on steam too, along with EA. anybody with their attitude can get bent.

1

u/Zarkanthrex Jun 18 '26

Just copy the game's theme and get it.

u/ElkApprehensive2319 Jun 17 '26

Same. The Ubisoft logo is a mark of shame I do not wish to display on my monitor

11

u/_Rohrschach Jun 17 '26

If it weren't for heroes of might and magic I'd delete it aswell again. But sometimes sinking an afternoon into it is worth it.

5

u/omagoleo Jun 17 '26

For me it's Trackmania Turbo. Goated game but i with i had paid the extra price on steam since i'll barely ever open Ubisoft's launcher just to play it

5

u/sonicdm Jun 17 '26

Steam just opens the Ubisoft launcher

2

u/no6969el 9950X3D | 5090 Jun 17 '26

Are you playing online?? If not, there's definitely a solution for that.

1

u/_Rohrschach Jun 17 '26

Nope, just doing the campaigns. It's relaxing between the shooters and other realtime stuff I usually play. I like to be able to roll a cig or get a beer from the fridge without havong to worry about respawning or stuff like that.

1

u/meteor_stream Jun 17 '26

The first three Rayman games for me.

2

u/Cyanide612 S620Ryzen5600x32GB2TBP5RTX4070 Jun 17 '26

Wildlands was the last I played. Rangefinding and sniping an entire base was fun.

What? Enjoying their games does not equal white knighting. "Having a different opinion the the reddit hive mind? What a white knight." get out of here with that false equivalency fallacy

u/99in2Hits Jun 17 '26

The only Ubisoft title that could bring me back would be another Splinter Cell. Astounds me that Blacklist was recevied generally well and sold well yet SP has been dead ever since.

5

u/Legitimate-Simple-20 Jun 17 '26

but that's kinda the problem isn't it? if they try to make a game that people keep telling they want and it doesn't sell, why should they keep trying? I did buy it and it's really a great game and I wish ubisoft would make more of those. but now they won't and we get more AC Remakes probably, cause I can't imagine that black flag won't sell well.

1

u/SvenTheHorrible Jun 17 '26

I mean, my opinion- they should cease to exist as a company in their current form. Only way to regain trust would be to fire the entire C suite and start over.

2

u/Legitimate-Simple-20 Jun 17 '26

But that's still a problem. if the studio that created The Lost Crown goes Indie and wants to make a spiritual successor who's going to give them money for it? It's just a risk probably nobody is willing to take. the best solution is to vote with your wallet and that means buying what you like and not buying what you don't like. you can hate ubisoft all you want but if they go down (and that's a big if) they probably get replaced or bought up by another big company.

4

u/NyneFingers Jun 17 '26

Yep. Haven’t bought a Ubisoft game in over 5 years.

1

u/brainburger Jun 17 '26

Far Cry 3 doesn't seem to work anymore.

0

u/Educational-Cat2133 Jun 17 '26

Easiest company to drop too lol, they haven't made anything good for a long while.

3

u/HWatch09 Jun 17 '26

I mean I had fun with AC Mirage, Valhalla, Outlaws, and Lost Crown. I played them all on Game Pass and PS Extra though. They can make good games, but their name is tarnished and I don't think they can ever recover based on that alone. Once you have that negative reputation, especially in the gaming world, you're done.

Having said all that, I do not want to use their launcher ever or even buy anything on their storefront. I'll try their games on Game Pass or PS Extra though.

0

u/Educational-Cat2133 Jun 17 '26

To each their own. I played AC1 and the first 5 titles or so and it just felt like they released the same game over and over.

I moved to games produced by FromSoftware and even their older titles feel fresher lol

I feel like ubisoft makes games for people that suck at videogames tbh lmao

2

u/unholydistractions Jun 17 '26

Wait, so people who suck at video games cant play video games? I play for my enjoyment and because i have no life, not to make anyone else happy or to compete with anybody. (Yes i suck at video games)

1

u/Lochcelious i7 13700k, 4070s, 32gb ram, 2k res Jun 18 '26

You're not allowed to have even a SMIDGE of a neutral or positive opinion about games Ubisoft makes around here, it seems

0

u/_NameMachineBroke Jun 17 '26

Same with far cry, they struck gold with the third one and then just kept making it

1

u/Lochcelious i7 13700k, 4070s, 32gb ram, 2k res Jun 18 '26

Far Cry 6 is fun, Star Wars Outlaws is fun, Assassin's Creed Shadows is fun, Ghost Recon Breakpoint was fun, R6 Siege is still fun...

1

u/notislant Jun 17 '26

I think reddit vastly overestimates these kind of boycotts. If they produced an amazing game, the people boycotting would be well under 1%. Very few people will follow through regardless.

1

u/SvenTheHorrible Jun 17 '26

Not really a boycott- they’re just on a list of companies I do not trust with my money.

1

u/Kilroy1007 Jun 17 '26

The last game that they got me for was Breakpoint. Their marketing was top notch, "Discover your Breakpoint".. well mine was the absolute garbage you pushed out after marketing a completely different game. And Far Cry? Same game since 3. Assassin's Creed is no better. In Origins, I didn't have to pull a torch out. I could light an arrow and then carry that out instead. They removed it with Odyssey, you just put your bow up in 2 seconds. So many little touches got lost in the race to pump out another carbon copy with new characters and anything but a damn hidden blade.

0

u/SilvieraRose Jun 17 '26

After the fiasco that was Unity, I refused to buy their games at all for a good while. Then when I did, it was only second hand so the money didn't go to them mostly. I did break and get the dlc for odessy when I finally got around to trying it

0

u/amolakaloumpakoula Jun 17 '26

yup if they want ppl to buy their games they better put them in GOG cause i ain't buying a ubisoft game that requires their launcher

0

u/VelveteenDelta PC Master Race|i5 12600KF|32GB|3080Ti Jun 17 '26

I haven’t bought a Ubisoft game since the shit show that was Assassin’s Creed 3.

0

u/Y-Yorle Jun 17 '26

That's entirely a fair point yeah

-5

u/acewing905 Jun 17 '26

That is just as silly as being a fanboy

7

u/Ok-Sundae-7806 Jun 17 '26

How come?

Ubisoft have had a bad rep for quite sometime now, wouldnt it make more sense to stop buying from them if your last few purchases sucked?

I picked up Mirage as I heard it was closer to the original games and had a good time with it but I actively avoid anything Ubisoft otherwise. They have a lot to do before people trust them again like other studios.

Bethesda went the same way for me, loved their early work but fallout 76 and starfield showed me that the old bethesda was gone. ES6 might change that but I aint holding my breath.

0

u/ThePastryJeff Jun 17 '26

I won't even play the free games from epic because you have to use ubiconnect

1

u/SvenTheHorrible Jun 17 '26

I call it voting with my wallet. I want their C suite fired, and I won’t be purchasing anything from them until it happens.

From me alone they’ve lost over a thousand dollars if I bought all the games since I decided to no longer trust them. That’s not inconsequential.

-3

u/-F3rris- Jun 17 '26

I don't mind buying from them, but I recise to install any dhitty launcher or make any shitty account.

39

u/King_Moonracer003 Jun 17 '26

Yea its a great game. And they immediately dissolved the team lol

12

u/mrloko120 Jun 17 '26

The team was dissolved as a result of the disappointing sales numbers. Single player games don't usually have random spikes in sales months after release, it gets pretty clear if it is a flop or not during the launch week when the sales are the highest. Its always a steady drop from then on.

22

u/Mr_Meo Jun 17 '26

Lost crown sold 1.3 million copy during first year and 9 month ago they announced 3 millions played. Disappointing sales is another way to say unrealistic expectations...

10

u/mrloko120 Jun 17 '26

For a company the size of Ubisoft, 1.3 million copies isn't enough to keep the lights on. For a more recent example, AC shadows sold 3 million copies and the conpany is still on the edge of bankruptcy.

3

u/Mordret10 Jun 17 '26

But they don't have the same guys working on AC and the other game. They have different teams, which should get different budgets

1

u/voidox Jun 17 '26

yup, it didn't sell good enough, ppl who do the "duh unrealistic expectations" are just fanboys trying to cope cause what information are they making that assertion with? do they know what the expectations were?

fact is that the game sold poorly in part cause making a new Prince of Persia game as a metroidvania was a stupid decision, the game was too expensive for a metroidvania, so on.

3

u/MistSecurity Jun 17 '26

Yes, though it's hard to say how well it did when we do not know the budget that went into it. If they put 30M into it and got 60M out, they were just expecting too much. If they put 60M into it and got 60M out, or worse numbers than that, then the question becomes why was the budget so high, did it NEED such a budget, and/or the game was a flop.

Considering it was fairly well reviewed, cost is likely the driving failure factor.

1

u/Itsmemurrayo Jun 18 '26

I mean if you look at the Metroidvania genre/market they 100% had unrealistic expectations. They made an incredible game, but priced it at what $50 on launch I believe which is way above market value (around 2x the average release price) for Metroidvania games. Look at Hollow Knight/Silksong, or Ender Lillies/Magnolia & Blasphemous 1 & 2. They’re all $25 or less MSRP and regularly go on sale for $10-$15. Prince of Persia was released June 2023 at $50 and didn’t go on sale until March 2024 where it dropped to $30. Even the sale was priced above market value for that type of game. It wasn’t until May 2024 basically a year after release that it dropped to $25 on sale which is a reasonable price. 5 months later in October 2024 they disbanded the team when the game still hadn’t gone on sale for under $20. They were set up to fail from the start by pushing unrealistic pricing for a game that while good had a ton of much better priced competition.

1

u/voidox Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26

is this a bit to just prove what I said? nothing you said there has any proof behind it, do you know what the budget was for the game? do you know what the expectations actually were? no, you don't.

yes the price was something we can call out but that is not "unrealistic expectations" nor is it the only reason it failed, the expectations is what they saw they could make on return at the price they set it at and no one knows if said expectations were unrealistic or not. For all we know, they priced the game as they did and had perfectly realistic expectations on the returns and the game failed to meet those.

the fanboys of this game seriously go on insane mental gymnastics to try anything to not say this game flopped or blame everything but the game itself for the failure... sigh.

btw, the game was set up to fail by the devs from the start, by making a new prince of persia game as a metroidvania, so a niche as heck genre that for an old IP where the fans it has had not interest in + brand new character and story, the devs very much were part of why this game failed.

1

u/DesperateEagle4505 Jun 17 '26

Next time don't ruin the prince the character who is basically the whole game

1

u/Amadeone Jun 18 '26

no jokez i believe if game slike these were cheaper, they would sell MUCH better and probably make more. I though about buying it, but decided it wass too expensive

25

u/warriorkin Specs/Imgur here Jun 17 '26

There's no point buying it. Just pirate it.

You can emulate the Switch version easily enough from what I've heard.

11

u/KGon32 Jun 17 '26

People complain about Ubisoft and celebrate their downfall because they are sick of the open world slop, however the games that flop aren't the open world slop, it's the more unique ones.

If they kept only making slop and didn't investing in making niche games, making games and porting games for new platforms like the Vita, Wii U and IPhones, they would be much more financially healthy

6

u/RenderedKnave Peace be with all platforms! Jun 17 '26

those “new platforms” haven’t existed in years

there are no modern counterparts to any of those platforms, even the Switch is a thoroughly normal platform, and mobile gaming is mtx hell

3

u/KGon32 Jun 17 '26

the new platforms of the current day is for example the iPhone where they ported AC mirage.

1

u/SpezRuinedHellsite Jun 17 '26

Ubisoft isn't a shitty company because they make open world "slop".

Ubisoft is a shitty company because they pioneer and invent anti-consumer practices like always-online requirements for single player games with no online components.

0

u/BlackholeDisco Jun 17 '26

It’s both, all their games follow the same shitty slop, with new textures. It’s pathetic

2

u/UntitledCritic Jun 17 '26

I hate 3rd party launchers and accounts, only thing keeping me from buying it on the Deck.

1

u/RCTD-261 Jun 17 '26

it is a good game, but the trailer left a bad impression for most gamer because of the music and character design

1

u/11_forty_4 9800X3D | 4080S | DDR5 6400 | 3440x1440 Jun 17 '26

Yeah I loved The Lost Crown I thought it was excellent.

1

u/coreyc2099 Jun 17 '26

100% I loved it. I bought it early and ran into a glitch though and couldn't 100% the game. I do have it loaded on my switch yo restart. Its a great game. Wish it sold better

1

u/Emergency_Lie42 Jun 17 '26

Ubisoft are bargain bin games now no matter how good they are.

Thankfully, since Ubisoft is failing so much of their games end up in the bargain bin anyway. $12 is basically retail price for them now.

2

u/The_Iron_Mollusc Jun 17 '26

Yeah I recently picked it up for my switch cheap and it's been well worth it. Sad to hear about the devs; hope they all land somewhere better!

-4

u/HEX_BootyBootyBooty Jun 17 '26

Lol, no. You could just go play Dead Cells. Better game, not ripping any other shit off for a quick buck, it's what Lost Crown was copying.

8

u/Grabs_Zel Linux Jun 17 '26

You could make a case that Lost Crown takes a lot from Hollow Knight and the precision platforming from Celeste, but Dead Cells? Have you played either game?

It's great if you like Hollow Knight and SilkSong.

I don't know about the whole black character controversy.  I always thought he looked Egyptian.

1

u/DKu_03 Jun 17 '26

Dead Cells is a roguelike with a different combat system than The Lost Crown

-1

u/Worldly-Wind-1632 Jun 17 '26

Star Wars outlaws is the best in game experience of the Star Wars world as well.

0

u/DesperateEagle4505 Jun 17 '26

This is the game that turned the prince black right? As someone who played the ps2 sands of time game I feel like my outrage over that is more valid than people who never played the game telling me I have no right

12

u/TheOneWithALongName Specs/Imgur here Jun 17 '26

The Lost Crown was the first Ubisoft game I bought since Prince of Persia (2008). Boss fights were very hype, and the combat. Oh man, the insane combos you can create near the end.

1

u/SheevSyndicate Jun 17 '26

Lost crown on steroids is what I was thinking of when the rumours of a greek god of war metroidvania began spreading. That game could have been THE AAA sidescroller/metroidvania.

30

u/MentalBomb Ryzen 7 7800x3D | RX 7900 XTX Jun 17 '26

Then the "talent" should take a page out of Sandfall Interactive and say: Screw these corpo fucks, let's make a game we want to make and play. Then continue to make GOTY.

55

u/blueblip Jun 17 '26

Easier said than done. Not every dev is good at securing funding and going their own way. You can't just start making a game out of your home with no income to cover living expenses, people's salaries, etc.

30

u/Immolation_E Jun 17 '26

Plus the social skills to build relationships required for people wanting to take a risk with you. Not just investors, but creative collaborators.

11

u/IM_A_MUFFIN Laptop Jun 17 '26

Yeah, being a developer ain’t the same as running a business. It takes an entirely different skillset that are basically all soft skills where everything is non-deterministic and your biggest issue isn’t the tech you’re working on, but getting people on board with what you’re doing. Tech problems are easy; people problems are hard.

6

u/YesImKeithHernandez Jun 17 '26

Also, soooo many dev teams are trying to do the independent route. With loan interest rates being what they are and investors scrutinizing more than ever, you're competing with a whole bunch of talented people trying the indie route in a way that was absolutely not the case even 5 years ago.

-2

u/kulingames Ryzen 5 3600, RX580, 16GB DDR4 Jun 17 '26

5

u/puppytailwagger Jun 17 '26

okay, what's your game then?

0

u/kulingames Ryzen 5 3600, RX580, 16GB DDR4 Jun 17 '26

Brother i literally just said that, give me like two weeks to get some basic design drawn out. Hell even set up the remindme bot, then you can hate

3

u/blueblip Jun 17 '26

Fool! If you had vibe coded a game, you would have finished by now!

1

u/kulingames Ryzen 5 3600, RX580, 16GB DDR4 Jun 17 '26

I would rather fuck myself with 3 crowbars wrapped in barbed wire

2

u/blueblip Jun 17 '26

Yeah, but on the flip side:

You are still game-less, AND you don't have anything shoved up your butt.

Is this really anyway to live your life?

1

u/Xerxes457 Jun 17 '26

Yeah just like every dev team that was formed from former devs. Surely they all made great games that are GOTY worthy.

0

u/UltraJesus Jun 17 '26

Games take a massive amount of time to iterate to find the fun and trim the garbage. There is a reason why you typically see senior talent to start their own studio. Time and money with institutional knowledge(not necessarily requires, but it's massive to help informed decisions though)

"massive amount of time" is an understatement. E33 took 6 years to make. Mewgenics took ~7 years. it's been 10 years since I've seen it but I'm pretty sure Indie Game The Movie well elaborates the stress of it all if you aren't financially set already.

Plus external funding is somewhat shying away from games, because Fortnite isn't making trillions.

0

u/pkzilla Jun 17 '26

It's not that easy, you gotta start a company and secure millions in funding. It's not just about being a dev and doing what you're good at, there's a LOT more too it.
Add in that most experienced Devs don't have the time or energy to work 60+ hour weeks whcih is generally what you gotta do when you start a business, and cost of living is incredibly high in most places, and there aren't much jobs in the industry at the moment

0

u/WealthyTuna Jun 17 '26

Clearly you have no concept of how difficult it is to get funding for games these days and just assume someone's willing to write that check for 200 million dollars

0

u/11ce_ Jun 18 '26

Most devs aren’t good at business and management and starting a company. They just want to clock in and make games.

2

u/NikosJax7 Jun 17 '26

Im pretty sure the same team is working on the rayman legends remake

1

u/Varonth i7 3770k - Asus GTX660 TI - 8GB DDR3 - 120GB SSD Jun 17 '26

And a lot of the Prince of Persia team made the original Rayman Legends.

Ubisoft did not fire these people after they made acclaimed games, they just move them to a new project.

1

u/rehoob Jun 17 '26

Man sometimes I think I should turn off Ad-block cause I NEVER heard of this 2 year old game and I love the series... then I turn it off and get Ads Ill never buy anyways

Good looking game tho back on topic haha Ill have to grab that

1

u/Zeke_the_Sleek_ Jun 17 '26

Have never even heard of this game. Looks like they put a lot of time into it but I feel like games of this style were popular during PS3 days, not sure why they’d make a game with that POV and think people would like it

1

u/sphafer Jun 17 '26

Dismantled? I thought they were the ones working on the new rayman origins remake?

1

u/wildeye-eleven Ryzen 7 7800X3D | RTX 5080 FE Jun 17 '26

Super fantastic game. Probably the best thing Ubi has made in over a decade.

1

u/GarikCarrot Jun 17 '26

I love this game a lot, but I almost drop the game before entering the menu. Signing in to Ubisoft account was required to play this game on PS4 - and I'm not going to do this, I hate typing on gamepads. So I turned off the network every single time, when I wanted to play

1

u/M4TTEO_S Jun 19 '26

Nah, those great talent people ran away while they could and made Clair Onscur

1

u/mrloko120 Jun 17 '26

What happened to prince of persia was a crying shame.

People keep wondering why ubisoft never tries anything outside their usual formula, but every time they do, like with this game, no one buys it. Its almost as if the people who go around loudly complaining about games were never willing to buy them in the first place.

-1

u/DarthWeezy Jun 17 '26

Those people aren’t buying or playing any games, complaining is their hobby and Ubisoft is the easiest choice to engage with countless such people and bots.

1

u/RoyalMagiSwag 9800x3D | 9070XT | 32 GB DDR5 Jun 17 '26

The team for that game was reunited

0

u/HEX_BootyBootyBooty Jun 17 '26

..... Ubisoft was a shit company 30 years ago. They made licsened games that people were willing to buy. It's always been slop.
