Recently went to Almaty, Kazakhstan and somebody mentioned the developers were based there. I am otherwise going in blind.

I absolutely loved Kazakhstan. Just spent several weeks backpacking around the country. I really fell in love with Almaty. While there, I met somebody who mentioned the developers were based there and was recommended to play this. Just thought it was sweet to see some KZ devs. I'm already blown away by the title music. Other than a brief description and mentions of it being a brutal experience, I'm going in blind! Wish me luck.

Have a good time! Contrary to what another commenter says, there is actually content and very deliberate dialogue locked behind you dying, so just take it as it goes.

Not sure about the latest Ice-Pick, but Pathologic 1-2 were 100% developed in Russia. And going blind is the way to play them!

I wouldn't be surprised if they left after the War in 2022. Actually I was kinda surprised to see Pathologic 3 released with all the sanctions. Now I get how/why

Most likely, same as many other Russian and Ukrainian companies who had to relocate because of the ongoing war. It just feels weird when someone calls Ice-Pick a Kazakhstani dev)

that makes sense. historically, and moreso after the start of the war, there have been many Russians who live in Kazakhstan. Everybody spoke Russian, all the signs/menus are in cyrllic, and there are still many old Soviet statues or monuments. Of course, it is Kazakhstan and not Russia, which is central Asian. No sanctions there. In fact, all you need is an American passport and you can get in with no visa or other bullshit required. Safer than almost anywhere in the USA. really lovely country.

Not ALL the signs are in Cyrillic. Kazakhstan has been trying to implement the Latin version of the writing system for a while now, so many official and random other signs are in the Latin alphabets (well, at least 3 different versions existed over the years 🙃)

However, afaik the Cyrillic version is still what's taught in school, so... yeah.

Yes, fair. And I will reiterate I don't expect it to be Russistan. However, it is nice to have a lingua franca. I used Russian with as many kazakh words as I could learn

Highly recommend. Amazing nature. You have canyons, the open steppe, mountains, dunes and so on. Plus, Almaty is an amazing metropolitan city

Yes I think they stated explicitly that this was the reason for the move to Almaty

Endure. No matter what happens. No matter what is offered to you.

There will be a happy ending.

That… doesn’t seem right to me.

An ending.... perhaps. Depending on your choices.

Good luck <333333 I hope you have fun!
Don’t get too worried about mistakes. The point of the game is living with consequences and there are no right or wrong choices, just the aftermath.

Any choice is right, so long as it's willed. That's the truth.

Good luck man. Have fun. Also Remember that you are the only competent doctor in the entire town so if you die, everyone else dies with you (and you get a debuff). So try to not die.

Ice-Pick Lidge has always been based in Almaty, though most of the developing team in Russian and the game is very Russian as well. Incredible, though. Enjoy! Also, I'd really love to go to Kazakhstan, do you have any advice? :)

Which country do you live in? The country has very good relations with western countries, so it is very easy to travel there. Just need a passport and can stay visa free for 30 days. I went from the USA on Turkish Airlines: west coast USA -> Istanbul -> Almaty. Daily flights to Almaty out of Istanbul.

If you go, I recommend flying in to Almaty because it truly felt like the gateway to the country. It is very modern, metropolitan, and walkable. You can take day trips to some phenomenal national parks in the area. Then, I really enjoyed taking the train to Karaganda followed by Astana. I flew back home out of Astana.

It is ideal to know at least basic Russian. it is the lingua franca and I found I was expected to speak Russian during most interactions. it's great to know Kazakh, but it is normal to speak Russian. Russian is also useful to learn so that you can go to Kyrgyzstan, or other CIS/post-soviet countries

Thank you! I'm from Spain, so I assume my passport won't give me trouble, but I'll look into it. I'll definitely check out Almaty, I hadn't even though about making base anywhere other than Astana, lol.
Also, я немного знаю по-русски) i'm learning now (bc of this damn game, btw), so it'll be cool to get to use it a little, hahah
