PSA: REPORT ALL AI DO NOT INTERACT

I just removed a graphically violent AI slop video involving a fake cocktoo being murdered. I expect this to happen again.

THEY AREN'T REAL.

PLEASE for the love of all that's good, if you run into a violent or suspected AI slop post, DO NOT INTERACT WITH IT. Report it. Report it. JUST REPORT IT.

Do NOT give it engagement, do not try to talk to the person, YOU CAN'T CONVINCE PEOPLE NOT TO DO THIS. For these kinds of posts, any engagement is considered good engagement. Even downvoting and condemnation is engagement. DO NOT.

Let your mod team handle this.

Rule 1: Be civil and respectful. What does that really mean?

Hello /r/parrots community! It’s your friendly neighborhood mod team here.

This sub doesn’t have too many rules, but perhaps the most important is to be civil and respectful towards others. We do not tolerate rudeness or personal attacks, regardless of context. You may ask why we take this rule so seriously.

While it’s never a bad idea to just generally be nice, we also have this rule for a very important reason: to help people take better care of their birds. How, you may ask? We strive very hard to keep this community a place where people feel comfortable asking questions so they can receive feedback.

We recognize that people feel very strongly about parrot husbandry, and that seeing birds in conditions that are not ideal can be difficult, but we also know that making attacks or being snarky doesn’t help anyone. Instead, it makes people defensive or nervous to ask questions. When we fail to foster a community where people can look for advice, the parrots lose. Every time.

Our general rule of thumb is this: you shouldn’t say anything online that you wouldn’t say in person to someone you know. Remember that there is a human on the other end of the exchange you’re having. If you’re disagreeing with them, be constructive and kind. Give the sort of advice you’d like to receive. Remember that you may be talking to people in tough situations, or a kid, or someone who has been given outdated information.

Very importantly, if someone violates this rule in their response to you, do not respond in kind. Instead, please report the comment.

That report button is one of the most important tools we have as a community! We check threads all the time, but with a constant stream of new content, it’s always possible for us to miss something.

We ask that you please hit that report button if you believe someone is violating the rules. The moderators review each and every post or comment that gets reported, and we will take action as appropriate. You can also reach our team via modmail if you have an issue.

We appreciate your help keeping the subreddit friendly and welcoming. We are grateful to everyone who contributes their time and experience to help people learn about parrots, to everyone who asks for help when they need advice, and to the folks who share their wonderful birds with us!

All the best,

The /r/parrots mods

Feather suddenly sticking out under my ringneck’s wing—vet appointment Tuesday, should she be seen sooner?

Hi everyone! My female Indian ringneck is 9 months old, and today I noticed a long gray feather sticking out at an odd angle underneath her wing (photos attached).
Her wings were already clipped when I got her, and she’s never flown while I’ve had her, so this isn’t a sudden loss of flight. The feather sticking out like this is new, though, and I’m worried it could be bent, broken, or displaced. I haven’t tried to pull or adjust it.
She already has a vet appointment scheduled for Tuesday. Has anyone seen something similar? What signs would mean she needs to be seen sooner, and is there anything I should do to keep her comfortable until then? Thank you!

Everyone's having a great time. Except Peaches 😂

Peaches was being a little bully earlier, chasing Mochi away every time Mochi tried to eat some apple. So I put Peaches back in the cage for a bit.

A little later, Mochi got sleepy and Sweetie wanted head scratches, so I put them both on my hand.

Turns out these two are perfectly happy just chilling together 😂

Then Bells showed up for some head scratches too.

Meanwhile, Peaches was in the cage looking VERY eager to get back out.

Everyone was having a lovely afternoon. Well, almost everyone lol.

Help! Plucking feathers nonstop!

Hello everyone, my dad has a blue & gold macaw, he’s had her since she was 8 months old, she’s now 32, shes always been a healthy & happy bird, loves coming out of her cage, shredding junk mail, rubbing her beak on the carpet, etc

The issue is she started laying unfertilized eggs for a while, at least once a month. When she was 20, We’d wait for her to get “bored” of her eggs and take care of them. She later eggs for about 5 years but when she stopped she started plucking her feathers nonstop. She’s bare on her chest, her legs, her back.
About a year ago she also started having night terrors and has been difficult to get her out of the cage. She also tries to bite more now. We’re not sure what’s causing all of this or if it is all connected somehow,
We’ve taken her to numerous vets and have done various amounts of testing which come to show no medical relation, her diet has consisted of seeds, pellets and some “people” food, one vet also tried to prescribed her an antidepressant but that seemed to have no effect/change

We’re at a loss cause, my dad is thinking it’s best to put her to sleep but we’re trying to avoid that unless absolutely needed to be done.

First pic her before she was plucking, 2nd is what she looks like now ish (shes more bare on her chest)

Edit: my father does NOT want to euthanize her, we’ve called many rescues for advice and possibilities giving her up but we’ve gotten told they’re full, & has gotten stoned walled
He fears it is the only option left and we’re trying all of our resources

Also located in MI

Please help, thank you in advance!

Hi all, I’ve had Sprite for almost a year now, and he’s always done this weird opening and closing of his mouth. It’s usually during or after he eats, but sometimes he’ll just do it at random. Other than this he acts normal and is comfortable. Any ideas? Should I be worried?

When I got home last night, I was not greeted with the usual scream I am used to. As I approached her cage, she was not there. I started calling her and she started screaming. She was 20 feet away on the table in the hall. There is no way she climbed; she had to have flown or glided there. She never acknowledged Scooter as her brother, so I am not entirely sure why she is standing on him. 🤣😭❤️🙏

ive been trying to get into painting to expand my mediums as an artist and wanted to share this painting of my favorite parrot! (excuse the cruddy lighting ToT)

i know its by no means museum worthy but i dont know i’m feeling pretty happy with it considering its only my 3rd time painting a bird (and 3rd time painting in general other than fabric paint when making patches which is a totally different ballpark). i think my main self criticism would be to work more on the wing structure, i don’t have an issue with avian anatomy when using my preferred mediums, but translating all that to painting has been quite a challenge! he’s supposed to be doing the heart wings pose but i’m not sure it conveys it well.

for anyone unfamiliar, this is a palm cockatoo. they’re amazing and truly unique birds that have been my favorite parrot since i first found out about them as an angsty pre-teen first getting into punk culture and thinking it was the most badass authentically punk animal i’d ever seen. that hasn’t changed one bit in the years since!

one of the many things that makes this bird unique is their drumming, if you weren’t already convinced enough of their punkness. when courting, they will break a branch off of a tree and find a hard surface like a rock or a log and use it as a drumstick, rhythmically hitting it against the surface with each individual having their own unique rhythm. super neat stuff!

Cockatoo at friends house

Hi all,

I know nothing about birds so looking for opinions. I went to my friend’s house that lives with their Mom and they own this cockatoo. The brother actually owns him but has moved out and has a baby. No one in the family likes him but the brother doesn’t want to give him away. I don’t think they are caring for him properly.

The family keeps him under this blanket all day in his cage. They removed the blanket because I asked to interact with him. He would shake a lot then I played calm classical music and he would stop shaking. I thought he was cold or nervous, because the house is cold.

Almost overnight he developed this lump, and I don’t think his feathers should be missing under his belly. Anyone have commentary on this?

How do I make this more comfortable for him to stand on?

Post image

Camy loves standing on this curtain rail in my bedroom! It’s his favourite spot when he comes out of his cage even though he has a playground but I guess he just loves standing somewhere high up.

After standing up there for a while, his feet tend to get uncomfortable and he lifts them up and picks at them a little. The vet also did notice some very very slight sores from standing somewhere flat so I am assuming it’s from standing up there. He is perfectly fine standing on round natural perches in his cage etc. I am a bit concerned about arthritis etc as he gets older (he’s 8 now)

Is there anything I can do to make it more comfortable for him to stand on? It’s a rectangular curtain rail, not the normal round ones. I considered vet wrapping it but it isn’t possible since the curtain attaches at the bottom, and if i vet wrapped it I wouldn’t be able to close/open the curtains. I wouldn’t want to completely discourage him from standing up there since he loves it so much.

WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO HER?

Is this supposed to be her moulting?

A little bit context, she is Rio, around 6-7 months of age. I have been away from home for 2 weeks because of my university and I came back hone yesterda. When I left, she had some feathers missing on her hair and a few pin feathers kicking in, I assumed she must be moulting because she never did her baby moult. And now she looks like this, there are some feathers missing under her wings too but she doesn't like to be handled. I have looked up PBFD, and ruled it out myself as it was stated as "highly contagious", but she's been living with my older birds for quite some time now and they all look beautiful. I am wondering what it could be. Her diet consists of veggies, mixed seed and fruits.

I am very scared, I don't know what it could be. Does anyone had similar experience they wanna share? There are no avian vets and general vets are not an option as one of those monsters killed my baby bird due to wrong dosage of meds. Any help would be appreciated!

Is this normal after feeding him his medicine cuz he was eating fine b4

After selling a lot of my shit like my MacBook and ipad I managed to take him to the vet and we didn’t focus on diagnosis and instead on treatment as diagnosis would be expensive.
He was prescribed vitamin A, B and antibiotics plus eyedrops. We gave him the antibiotic and vitamin B ( Doxycycline Oral Susp 50mg/ml, Thiamine Vitamin B Oral Susp 100mg Cyanocobalamin 200mcg/ml VSRx) and after that he started making these beet boxing sounds I mean he normally makes sounds when he breathes too but this machine gun gunshot sound is new and he was eating his pellets normally b4 getting medicine and after that he’s sitting with his eyes closed, looking all drunk and beatboxing.
His differential diagnoses include Chlamydiosis (psittacosis) versus bacterial sinusitis/rhinitis, along with a suspected right cervical air sac rupture with subcutaneous emphysema, infectious upper respiratory disease and air sacculitis.
The vet is closed rn so I can’t rlly ask them any questions till tmr so pls lmk if this is ok or not.

Advice needed: raising a 16-week-old Eclectus – flying to my head, boundaries and biting

Post image
40 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I have a 16-week-old male Eclectus parrot named Gideon. He is still settling into our home, and I’d really appreciate practical advice from people who have raised a young Eclectus themselves.

Gideon is very social and seems to have a clear preference for me within our family. He feels safest with me and steps up onto my hand very easily, so we already have a good connection in that sense.

However, when he is out of his cage, he frequently flies straight to my head or tries to climb onto my shoulder, even when I want him to stay on his play stand. I don’t want him on my head or shoulder at this stage, because I don’t fully trust him around my face yet. I’m still learning to read his body language and don’t know how he might react if he gets overstimulated or decides to bite. I’m particularly concerned about a bite to my face, nose or ears (earrings/piercings).

I’ve tried calmly returning him to his stand, but he often comes straight back to me. This can turn into a repeated cycle, and I’m struggling to teach him that he can be near me without constantly landing on me.

Another challenge is that he can be quite boisterous and excitable on some days, while being much calmer on others. I’ve tried a variety of treats to find something he really values, but food rewards don’t seem to motivate him particularly strongly. Sometimes he is more interested in getting to me than in the treat itself, which makes training a little difficult.

I also have three children, so my goal is to build a safe, positive routine that works for the whole family. I want him to remain fully flighted and learn to fly to me when invited, rather than feeling that he can land on my head or shoulder whenever he wants.

I really want this to work, both for Gideon and for our family. I’m committed to helping him learn, but I feel I need some practical guidance on how to teach him the foundations: boundaries, settling on his play stand, appropriate ways to interact with me, and managing his excitement without damaging our bond.

I’d especially love to hear from people who have been through this stage:
- How did you teach your young Eclectus to stay on a play stand instead of repeatedly flying to you?
- How did you set boundaries around your head and shoulders without making your bird afraid of you or damaging your bond?
- What did you do when your bird wasn’t particularly food-motivated and seemed more interested in physical contact than treats?
- How did you teach the difference between flying to you on cue and landing on you whenever he feels like it?
- Is this kind of behaviour and variation in excitement typical at 16 weeks, and what realistically helped you manage it?

I really want this to work, both for Gideon and for our family. I want to guide him properly during these early baby and toddler stages so we can build a strong foundation for his adolescence and adult life. I’m worried about unintentionally teaching him habits now that could become difficult to change later, or making mistakes at this important stage that could negatively affect his development.
I know he is still very young and has a lot to learn, which is exactly why I want to get things right from the beginning. I’m committed to helping him learn, but I need practical guidance and clear foundations to work with, rather than constantly guessing whether I’m handling things correctly.
I’d really appreciate honest experiences and concrete advice from people who have raised an Eclectus through these stages. I’m not looking for perfection, and I’m not looking for a quick fix.
I’d genuinely appreciate honest experiences and concrete, practical steps for teaching him a solid foundation, especially from people who understand Eclectus behaviour in a family home.

Thank you!
