Tech question Noob question about BTRFS partition structure

This past Saturday I installed Slowroll on a spare internal SSD partly because I'd been wanting to try openSUSE for a while, but mostly I was trying to troubleshoot an NVIDIA issue with my LinuxMint install. I'm sure that when I was installing Slowroll I didn't change anything at the partitioning phase, and I've ended up with the following partitions on the SSD (I used the whole disk):

sda partitions

Only sda5 mounts on startup, and the 78Gb partition, sda2, has an identical folder structure as sda5, though different file counts in those folders:

Folder structure

I'm not concerned with running out of space since I keep all my games, videos, and music, on other SSDs, but I'm curious what that partition is for, and could I, if needed, recover the space.

Outside of that, I'm really liking openSUSE, and I'm getting used to KDE Plasma. Kinda feeling like I've found my new home.

MicroOS I was wrong about Nvidia on opensuse

Hey everyone,

a good while back, I posted some furious rants claiming opensuse hated Nvidia users, ignored 90% of PC gamers and Tumbleweed was intentionally (more or less) breaking Nvidia drivers with every second kernel update.

As the time goes by it turns out the problem wasn't opensuse. The problem was sitting in my chair.

Back then, I had completely missed the importance dkms for building kernel modules dynamically against Tumbleweed's rapid kernel rollouts. In missing that my system was relying on the pre-compiled modules from the Nvidia repo, which often lag behind TW's kernel updates. Add the shift toward open source GPU kernel modules into the mix, the whole "kernel update broke my graphics" disappears entirely. So to any maintainers, developers, or community members I argued with back then: I was wrong, and I apologize.

While I take back the drama, I still believe my core criticism holds weight, getting Nvidia drivers running on opensuse, especially on aeon, kalpa or microos, is still unnecessarily clunky for regular users

If you come from distros with dedicated ISOs, hardware detection tools, or one-click toggles, opensue doesn't make life easy for you which is still a shame imho. Figuring out repository syncs, 32-bit dependencies or handling flags on immutable spins isn't beginner friendly at all. The underlying engine is rock solid, but the onboarding ramp for Nvidia users, which as stated before are in fact 80%* of a modern user base, could be way smoother.

Despite that initial friction, I recently gave microos through agama another shot and ended up building a deployment script for micro turning it into an absolute set-and-forget desktop machine, automating driver repo checks and nvidia integration, integrate flatpak with cleanup timers, polkit privilege rules, some gtk theme bridges and what not. ...

Long story short its simply brilliant. The atomic btrfs snapshot mechanism makes it virtually unkillable and from my understanding after one line of command it is legitimately the closest thing to a bulletproof, maintenance-free Linux desktop I've ever used.

So, credit where credit is due.

\Its around 75% from latest Steam survey and around 85% from JPR GPU Market Report*

I've missed OpenSuse

When I got my laptop I left Windows 11 that came on it because I was using this laptop for work, but I just couldn't take it anymore. so I picked up a second SSD and dual booted it to make tumbleweed my primary and windows my brek-glass-for-work-tools OS and it's incredible to me how much I missed openSUSE and how lightweight and snappy Linux is compared to Windows. I will never in my life understand how the worst software company on the planet bamboozled the entire world into thinking everything business critical needs to run on it.

Anyways thanks for coming to my Ted talk it's amazing to be back!

Blah blah blah slop blah blah, look, I'm not here to sell you anything or even argue for or against. Just know that I have the builds for Slowroll, Tumbleweed and Leap. Built automatically through OBS via script run from their git through mine as the RPM builds were for RHEL/Fedora. I have no connection to them, just making software available. Yell it into the void.

Community Is openSUSE made for me ?

Hey,

I am currently of fedora KDE and I never distro hopped, or anything like that.

I just need an os and openSUSE seems good.

My main issue with fedora is that the Firefox homepage keeps getting hijacked by the fedora.org page, and it keeps coming back when I remove it.

As for my use case, I only use KDE plasma, I run a few steam games, freecad and self host a few services.

I know I am not anything special but I am basically looking for stability, performance and an os that will keep getting updates (so backed by a big corp or a good track record) and doesn't have any weird quirks.

Steam Frame dongle- wireless regulatory domain issues

Wondering if anyone has a working Steam Frame wireless dongle. I'm on Tumbleweed myself, and the adapter attempts connections every few seconds. I ran the troubleshooter script from the steamVR-Linux github, and the issue I'm getting is "PROBLEM:REGDOMAIN: Your regulatory domain is set to 00 and using the DFS-UNSET rules set. Set an appropriate regulatory domain for your location."

I tried using kernel boot parameter "cfg80211.ieee80211_regdom=US" , but the problem message still appears, and then I also get a problem message about a missing driver for some reason.

For whatever it's worth, I have 2 wired pcvr headsets and 2 tumbleweed desktops and I've managed to get both of them to work. This dongle is the first real VR roadblock I've had.

Faster Download Speed

Did OpenSUSE switch servers? All of a sudden I'm finally getting faster download speeds on a par with other distros like Fedora and CachyOS. For example, OpenSUSE released a new image today on 10/10 and I'm getting a normal 14mbps or faster download speed.

Tech question Tumbleweed with Ext4?

OK, currently on Arch, thinking about trying tumbleweed.

Is it a big headache to install it without BTRFS and all other that comes with it. (I have some doubts with BTRFS regarding filesystem maturity and impact on NVME drive, if it is wrong assumption please explain why?

I have AMD card so i don't expect much problems regarding drivers, but i see some concerns about codecs. Can you explain what codecs are we talking about here. I use MPV which installs its own codecs and i have yet to encounter something it can not play. Is it like a codec for web browser or what exactly.

Is KDE the best flavor currently, i see Gnome 51 still has not landed?

Is it safe and possible to remove YAST if it is abandoned?

Thank You

Community Want to switch to OpenSUSE from Fedora

So, as the title says, I would like to try OpenSUSE, because I miss the old time of me trying new distros, since now has been almost 9 months that I'm on the same installation of Fedora.

I've used Linux since 2019, with 6 years of Debian based distro, a couple of week with Arch and then almost 9 months with Fedora.

I would like to know what make OpenSUSE different from others distros I'm your opinion, and if you have any advice or thing to know before switching to OpenSUSE

Firefox is still on version 156.0 on openSUSE Tumbleweed

Does anyone know why Firefox is still on version 156.0 on openSUSE Tumblweed?

I have also Fedora installation, and there the version is already 157.0, if I remember correctly it was updated very soon after it was released by Mozilla.

PSA: copy/paste stops working in GTK3 applications such as Firefox in the 1008 snapshot

The latest mutter change has broken copy&paste in GTK3 applications like Firefox.

There are multiple ways to work around this if you are using Firefox, but my recommendation is to wait until either the tumbleweed gnome team reverts the change or gnome devs fix the regression.

Why openSUSE?

Hi everyone!

I have been interested in openSUSE for about a week now, and I would like to hear your opinion on it (along with other distros you tried).

I tried Endeavouros (arch): Windows preformed better in terms of battery life (Laptop with Nvidia) dGPU, ubuntu long time ago: too bloated and too beginner-friendly i guess?, Fedora but not for long: don't remember why i moved away, and would like to try something new.

NixOS is pretty interesting but everyone is facing problems installing not-too-niche software, and I can't find anyone glazing openSUSE enough, I guess because it just works?

Also if you like, I want to know what wm, shell, or whatever its called u use as your explorer.exe.

Thank you

Installed Generic Desktop and was pleasantly surprised to see a DE

I am trying OpenSUSE Tumbleweed on my desktop computer.

Initially I installed Gnome, but on my second boot, I tried to update with zypper up and it said something was holding the packagekit resource. I assume Gnome is very oppressive (I've had issues with it elsewhere sadly).

So I just re-installed and I chose Generic desktop. I guess I thought desktop meant like, the type of computer. So I fully expected a bare terminal.

But then it gave me a graphical login screen! Little did I know it is a fully functional desktop (if old and maybe unintuitive for modern senses). I assume it's IceWM ? Just guessing from looks.

I'm not familiar with how to get IceWM all setup nicely for use, but I'm thinking I will keep it. Most distros that offer IceWM do not start it off as well configured as this!

Let me know if any of you use the Generic desktop install. I want to add a Wayland session to have available, but I'd love to keep this installed in parallel.

Just wanted to post my immediate feelings after this happened. It felt so nice to get a pretty polished setup when I wasnt expecting it, and even better when I realized it was a nice IceWM config for me. Someday I'll learn how to get these window managers / older DEs, setup as full modern desktops.

Stuck in zypper dup dependency loop with ffmpeg-8-mini-libs and Packman codecs on Tumbleweed

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to run a normal `zypper dup` on Tumbleweed today, but my update keeps getting stuck in an infinite dependency loop.

It's throwing this error:

`nothing provides 'this-is-only-for-build-envs' needed by the to be installed ffmpeg-8-mini-libs-8.1.2-6.1.x86_64`

When it prompts me to resolve it, it tries to force official openSUSE versions over my existing Packman multimedia libraries (`libavcodec62`, `libavformat62`, etc.) or pulls up a massive list of conflicts. I want to keep my Packman codecs intact without breaking my system or having to accept vendor switches.

What is the correct way to handle or bypass this package right now so I can finish my system update safely? Any advice would be appreciated!

Tech question Arc B580 compatibility

Hows the B580 on OpenSUSE? (Tumbleweed obv) Especially with gaming… I’ve been running it on an Nvidia laptop and I’ve been LOVING it, and didn’t have any issues with compatibility or any of that garbage especially with XFCE, so is it the same with arc gpus? I want to install it on my main PC currently running mint. Or should I wait until I can afford an amd gpu?

Can i use the next TW?

I have a series of questions to ask. I'm using Tumblweed Gnome with great pleasure, but I'm wondering if I can clean it up and use the likely OpenSUSE of the future. Yesterday I removed the packman repo, which was causing updates to be out of alignment.

- Can I uninstall the gnome packagekit since I update from terminal or via myrlyn?

- Can I start using Cockpit?

- Was I right to remove Packman? Will it still be supported?

Thank you for your answers ❤️
