I always use LGBTQ, dispite... Me being the A in LGBTQIA...

198

u/HatMcHatty 28d ago

I usually just say queer

53

u/_the_big_ 28d ago

i do too but some people consider it offensive for some reason

86

u/GreenMan1550 28d ago

Google 'reclaimation of the word queer'

12

u/BoardWritten 26d ago

Holy hell!

9

u/ilikeswisscheese1 26d ago

New word just dropped

8

u/BoardWritten 26d ago

Pope went on vacation never came back

51

u/Phantom_Wolf52 28d ago

It used to be used as a slur

22

u/SuddenlyDiabetes 28d ago

It still is in the UK, unlike the f slur which we use for other things

19

u/Fantastic-Arm-4575 27d ago

As an English person, I’ve never heard of queer being a slur here. And the full-length f-slur is still very derogatory, though the shortened one does refer to cigarettes. I’m in the North though - is it a geographical divide perhaps or just underexposure on my part?

6

u/SuddenlyDiabetes 27d ago edited 24d ago

In the black country/west midlands we have the full length f-slur to mean a particular type of meatball, usually made by a company called Mr. Brain's, I can't say if they've spread to other places in the UK but they were a mainstay in our house growing up.

Once again it could just be my area but queer is used in the same way as the f slur i.e "is he a queer?", it makes me reluctant to use it even if I know it's for reclamation purposes but I have nothing against other people doing so!

1

u/brownryan94 26d ago

Saying "Mr. Brain's F***** Meatballs" out loud made me lol.

1

u/Fantastic-Arm-4575 24d ago

Looked it up, and I personally haven’t ever heard of those meatballs. Maybe they never spread over here, or maybe I’m just too young given you said they were a mainstay growing up

2

u/JoeBiden2007 2d ago

some people here just use the full slur to refer to cigarettes. Not that they need to since they would anyway, but i think they just want a really good excuse to say it

6

u/AuthenticatedHuman 27d ago

I though the f slur was for general use, but I recently learned that it was homophobic

3

u/geeoharee 24d ago

so did every word for queers, because people do not like queers. it was primarily 'gay' when I was at school

2

u/Theriseofsatanishere 27d ago

And now It can be used as not a slur. The evolution and change of language is cool right?

8

u/EmoWaffles_ 28d ago

Some people consider it a slur, others a political identity

0

u/No-Bat-708 28d ago

Queer used to mean weird tho? Am I missing something?

7

u/HatMcHatty 27d ago

It technically can still mean weird, but it would be used like “hmm that is quite queer indeed” so it’s just a context thing. But that’s why queer people were called queer in the first place, now it’s been reclaimed to be positive.

1

u/PixelFlyerXD 27d ago

I mean it was for a time used as a slur OwO

1

u/Calicocat2006 22d ago

It's usually LGB drop the T people who find it offensive.

1

u/Sylint11020 21d ago

It's quite a well-known reason, tbh. And it's valid too.

1

u/Atsilv_Uwasv 17d ago

Because it used to mean strange. As someone who is queer in both senses of the word, I really don't care if someone says queer or zesty or anything like that as long as it's not a slur

0

u/Jhud6669 27d ago

Even when used as reclaimed, generally not everybody who is LGBT is queer

2

u/AnarchistTerrarist 26d ago

Don't know why you got disliked. Plenty of TERF lesbians, transmedialists, anti-aroace folks, biphobia, and lawdamercy are there so many more. I wouldn't consider them "queer" as a cultural moniker.

0

u/Queerasfuuuuuuu 26d ago

"For some reason"

looks at word that used to be primarly used as a slur

2

u/UpsideDownFoxxo 27d ago

Should we maybe just rebrand to Q+?

2

u/AllHailTheApple 25d ago

I would say I'm gay even though I'm aroace simply because gay has become kind of an universal thing and not strictly homosexual

1

u/Joeyrony2 26d ago

I just say "the gays™"

1

u/Major-Training4587 25d ago

Same. It's one syllable and rolls off the tongue

1

u/Ok_Length7917 23d ago

I say GSR-Min vs GSR-Mag

26

u/EmptyKetchupBottle9 28d ago

Hence why I always include the +!

1

u/Front_Cat9471 25d ago

Isn’t the plus redundant? Q already means queer

1

u/Burger_Destoyer 24d ago

Whole things feels redundant tbh, like LGBTQ gets the point across just fine

1

u/Front_Cat9471 24d ago

Yeah lqbtq or queer are pretty much the only terms I’ll use, I don’t even bother clicking to capitalize the letters unless it’s a suggested term. It’s such a basic concept that it really doesn’t need a string of characters strange enough to qualify for most strict password requirements

20

u/Still-Tip-3100 28d ago

I'm all three of the A variations and also don't say it

8

u/RitaMyLove 28d ago

Asexual, Aromantic, and?

16

u/Still-Tip-3100 28d ago

Agender

13

u/Stargazer_199 28d ago

Damn, do you fix cars too, triple A?

3

u/coolmanjack 28d ago

Maybe they also have an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm. They better be careful!

5

u/Joeyrony2 26d ago

Get on my level, im also autistic.

5

u/Motor-Plan-6388 she/her gynosexual transfem (no longer questioning) 28d ago

You really just went "no," huh?

1

u/Initial-Ocelot3577 25d ago

Theres nore than 3 theres abrosexual aro ace agender autosexual just to name a few

2

u/AllHailTheApple 25d ago

Abrosexual is under ace tho isn't it? I don't remember what it is because I don't bother with micro labels for myself since I'm always ~~~~~~~

1

u/Initial-Ocelot3577 23d ago

constantly changing sexuality so like ace one moment lesbian the next

5

u/LOSNA17LL 28d ago

Usually I say either LGBT or LGBT+ (or queer)

(Even tho I'm also part of the A)

3

u/AlternateSatan 28d ago

I usually stop at T and just say the + is implied if I have to elaborate, which I really never do.

3

u/vladutzu27 28d ago

If I’m talking out loud I say LGBT, if I’m writing something down and it’s important or official. I say LGBTQ+ just because it’s the most common form and I’m afraid that by saying LGBT or LGBT+ someone might feel like I’m for erasing certain identities

2

u/Vivians_Basement 26d ago

I just say LGBT+ long as there's the plus you hold everything.

0

u/MostInnocentSimp Not Trans but Transformer 17d ago

In the exact same boat…though didn‘t it stand for Ally of sum?

1

u/putbeansontoast 17d ago

Why the hell would allies be included

131

u/Universe_fs 28d ago

There was atleast a dozen more of these in the comments but this one was clearly the one with the most effort lol

26

u/mediumcarrotteacher 28d ago

Still trying to figure out how many keyboards they must have had to use

13

u/Coco_JuTo 28d ago

Was about to comment: "can we, at least, appreciate the dedication of activating, switching and selecting all those different keyboards for those characters?"

1

u/YazilimciGenc 27d ago

I think they were crashing out lmao

1

u/FreeMenu2197 26d ago

I can respect the effort for it.

58

u/Forsaken_Site_2268 28d ago edited 28d ago

Wait till they find out about my subreddit I made which has many many letters just for fun

LGBTQIAPNKXMF+

(the one post on the subreddit explains why the name is like that. Safe LGBTQIAPNKXMF plus)

35

u/Tetracheilostoma 28d ago

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Pansexual, North Korean, Xenogender, Muslim, and Furry

14

u/Forsaken_Site_2268 28d ago edited 28d ago

🤣🤣🤣

Lesbians Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer/Questioning Intersex Aro/Ace/Ally Pansexual NonHuman/Nonbinary/Neo Kin (like otherkin, etc) XenoGender Multigender/Mutosexual Ficto +

Or whatever labels you can think of that fit under those letters.

9

u/HatMcHatty 28d ago

Aro/Ace only it’s not ally there bc they are not queer

4

u/Squizei 28d ago

it’s about inclusion, not exclusion

16

u/Robota064 28d ago edited 28d ago

It's about being not straight...

Edit: or cis

6

u/Forsaken_Site_2268 28d ago

As a straight transgender person, wtf?

You mean not being queer. Queer = Either not Cis or not Hetero

8

u/LOSNA17LL 28d ago

(yeah, they edited the comment)

1

u/Regulus636 28d ago

And do heterosexual trans people cease to be trans within the LGBT acronym? lol

9

u/Robota064 28d ago

...or cis

Really had to pick at my (non-binary, aka trans) wording, huh

-2

u/Regulus636 28d ago

I thought the idea of responding consecutively was to include more and more niches within the acronym, didn't intend to criticize gratuitously, sorry...

5

u/LOSNA17LL 28d ago

*It's about being not cishet

A white anti-racist is still not a PoC

Allies are welcomed, but they aren't part of us

-2

u/Regulus636 28d ago

I thought everything here had a comedic tone, but it suddenly became very serious. yes, that's the real meaning. the idea behind my comment was that I thought we were going to continue with more inclusions of niches in a satirical and inclusive way. apparently, I misread the comment.

5

u/LOSNA17LL 28d ago

(was a "serious" nitpicking about the joke comment, and it snowballed from there)

0

u/Forsaken_Site_2268 28d ago

Apparently I'm not the "T" now.

✌️🫥

-1

u/Squizei 28d ago

if not being cishet is the only requirement, then would you consider a gay cis transphobic man a member of the lgbt community?

it’s a community about standing up for the rights of queer people, it doesn’t matter what category you do or don’t come under. in fact that’s the whole point, not letting people define you based on what you identify as or who you’re attracted to

1

u/HatMcHatty 22d ago

Saying the A is for Ally’s is exclusion, you’re excluding Aro/ace people.

1

u/Forsaken_Site_2268 28d ago

You can be queer Sexuality wise and a trans ALLY or trans and a queer Sexuality wise ally.

Since there are homophobic trans people and transphobic sexuality queer people.

2

u/HatMcHatty 28d ago edited 27d ago

if a person is an "ally" in the broad sense of LGTBQIA+ issues, that means they are cishet, thus not queer

because those other allys would already have spots in the acronym

Like if someone says they are an ally im going to assume that they are cishet. If they are gay and a trans ally they probably would say “im a trans ally” than just ally

4

u/SomniIsGay 28d ago

Hey just wanna warn you that sometimes queerphobes will us LGBTQIAP to try and make it seem like we support pedophilia

1

u/Forsaken_Site_2268 28d ago

GOD DAMNIT THOSE PEOPLE GOTTA RUIN EVERYTHING!!

4

u/SomniIsGay 28d ago

Yeah... I really hoped it was pansexual too but unfortunately it had to be ruined by radqueers and queerphobes....

1

u/A_temporary 21d ago

But do you have cyrillic

40

u/Professional-Fix4409 28d ago

This removal in the end will give us a big L for the community.

36

u/Embarrassed_Mail6752 28d ago

Alright. Give me a moment. I have too many thoughts and a lot of typing I can do.

LGBT if you need the quick version. LGBTQ, same deal.

LGBTQ+ for the shorthand inclusive. Like for quick writing and quick texting.

LGBTQIA for the longer explanations. Might be the best place to stop.

LBGTQIA+ for the longer inclusive.

LGBTQIA2S for texting and the longer explanations, LGBTQIA2S+ for the “there’s more”. That’s actually as far as I know the letter chain goes.

Queer if you use it and need the extremely short version. Great if you want to highlight the entire community in one word.

(label) folk if you’re highlighting a specific label, like aroace folk, trans folk, gay folk, demigender folk…you don’t even have to limit it to queer labels, you can just put “folk” at the end of a label. (I just typed “folk” so many times that the word “folk” doesn’t feel like a word anymore. Why does that happen and can I map it?)

Personally, I just use LGBTQIA+ or LGBTQ+. They’re quick to write, text, and say, and the + catches the rest.

— Somebody with way too many thoughts about this (and who won’t be giving up their em dashes because they’re doing a sign-off).

7

u/Embarrassed_Mail6752 28d ago

An add-on to this comment: LGBTQIA+ (LGBTQ+ as short) and queer could be used interchangeably, I believe? My thoughts writing this was “How would somebody write this or say this referring to this community,” so I have been running on the following sentence:
“The (abbreviation of choice) community…” with (abbreviation of choice) being anything in the original comment. As a few examples: “The LGBTQ community,” “The queer community,” “The LGBTQIA+ community.”
You can also use “(label of choice) folk…” for specific labels. Any labels, doesn’t have to just be queer ones. I say it’s sometimes better than “people” depending on context, such as “neurodivergent people” versus “neurodivergent folk”. The latter has a more informal feel to it, and I again personally use folk more (especially when it comes to writing about any specific communities).

— Signed, one very tired enby.

P.S. If you wish to avoid using queer to describe the LGBTQIA+ community, please know it’s fine and that as long as people know what you’re saying, it’ll be fine. I can’t explain my brain, but if you wish to not possibly offend anybody by using queer to describe the entire community, just use the community abbreviation/acronym (LGBTQ+ or LGBTQIA+). If you can reclaim queer and you use it, use it. I’m not the word police.

— Signed again, a queer (and still tired) enby who will not take offense to the word, and an enby who words things bluntly and constantly worries about the blunt phrasing at times if it even is blunt.

3

u/Neoma08 27d ago

2S is also specific to native Americans, so it's not comply used outside of America. I've never heard anyone use it in Norway unless we're referring specifically to the American queer community. The Sami people (northern indigenous people) have Sami Pride, they have a flag, but no specific letters because there is no specific sexuality or gender identity belonging to the Sami people.

3

u/ItzMeSneaky 26d ago

Regarding your question about typing the word "folk" so many times that it stopped feeling like a real word, that's because your brain keeps itself from overloading one exact section of it so if you say any word too many times it will stop feeling like a real word

10

u/SomniIsGay 28d ago

I generally type LGBTQIA+ cause I'm the T,Q, A, and the +

13

u/marchalves6 28d ago

dude forgot the § at the end, queerphobic fr.
/j

1

u/HarperTheOtherOne 22d ago

He forgot = to smh /silly

1

u/BinglesPraise 16d ago

Is it in the acronym to represent The Sims/SPORE characters, or Minecraft Bedrock players?

5

u/No-Heat-6149 28d ago

LGBTQ, LGBTQA+ if i am feeling fancy :3

4

u/RevolutionAccurate56 28d ago

LGBT is ok, it gets you a lot of common identities
LGBTQ is what I use, queer is an all encompassing term to be so it covers everything
LGBTQIA+ is the most id consider reasonable, it directly recognises intersex and asexual people and both are criminally underrepresented a lot of the time so if you want to use it the fuck yeah, do what you want
Anything more is just a bit much imo? Like at a certain point it just looks like a bunch of letters

1

u/M4TTEO_S 6d ago

queer is an all encompassing term to be so it covers everything

Then why don't you just use the word queer

3

u/Conscious_Reach_1655 28d ago

I just say lgbt as the shortened version, I dont see it as excluding people as I am the A and the full thing needed a + anyway

3

u/Prometheos_II 27d ago

They say that as if it wasn't transphobes that always are like "What's the P?", "What's the +?", or even explicitly cropping the TQ+

2

u/lunar__boo 28d ago edited 27d ago

all I got from this is that this person can... kind of count to 10?

2

u/Aromatic_Shoulder146 26d ago

frankly at this point the acronym has become to large and just saying "queer" makes more sense

1

u/M4TTEO_S 6d ago

Trying to say in a real conversation an acronym made mostly of consonants just sounds weird in general, so queer it is, i think. Anyway as for text i prefer lgbtq+

I just say +

1

u/bard_of_space 28d ago

i just say queer

1

u/Ascii-CoDA2148 28d ago

[r/one](r/one)[joke](r/one) post so good I downvoted on instinct.

1

u/Jbolt3737 28d ago

Has this person never seen it with the +? I feel like they got this idea from a bigot because I have never heard a queer person get mad about not including letters, maybe besides when someone intentionally edits a document to remove letters that were previously included

1

u/espa101 28d ago

i generally go for GSRM cause you dont need a plus to include everyone :)

3

u/Prometheos_II 27d ago

Honestly it's really a shame GSRM, MOGAI or MELTING HEARTS never picked up, since they are unambiguously inclusive of trans people and other minorities without being a growing alphabet.

1

u/Apprehensive_Ad516 28d ago

I just use legibitiqua

1

u/mgsmb7 28d ago

They put so much effort into this

1

u/ParticularOkra7432 27d ago

I just do LQBTQIA because it rolls off the tongue nicely, and taste pleasant to say. Sometimes I add in the plus for a little extra spice

1

u/redstowen 27d ago

Ah yes, diameter (ø) gender, my favourite

2

u/AllHailTheApple 25d ago

That can also mean empty (idk if that's what it's called in English) so it could work for the As like "nope nothing here. Was there supposed to be something?"

1

u/redstowen 24d ago

Didn't know that, thanks for teaching me something new

1

u/Isadomon 27d ago

It IS getting awfully long, not gonna lie

1

u/howelleili 26d ago

you dont have to spell it all out all the time

1

u/Boring-Dig4583 27d ago

its 7 fucking letters and plus yes it can be 5 or 4 letters but still

1

u/5D_Fanatic 27d ago

I just say gay if it's a sexuality and their gender identity if it's anything else, y'all are putting in too much work

1

u/Purplcurse3732 27d ago

i just say queer

1

u/Hexhider 27d ago

I use LGBT in speech but LGBTQ online

1

u/Ravenqueer077 26d ago

I mean I use either queer or lgbtq+ because that's what I grew up with

1

u/wortwortwort15 26d ago

I usually just either say LGBTQ or LGBT+

1

u/AzureLlama1 26d ago

Poor guy feel through a wormhole while talking. :(

1

u/Little-Wishbone-4699 26d ago

I just say LGBTQIA++

1

u/Johnirequirelasanaga 25d ago

The more letters you include, the more you'd have to include. LGBT is fine, no more letters needed

1

u/Leonartu 25d ago

My atte span runs out afte the four lett

1

u/dunkernater I'm behind your ear 25d ago

Instead of 3? Hasn't it always been lgbt?

1

u/Universe_fs 25d ago

Yes, but a lot people try to cut out the T. "LGB" without the "TQ" stuff like that.

1

u/JaylaTheGayla 25d ago

*cracks knuckles* *inhales*

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, aspec, 2-spirit, caedspec, demispec, enby, finsexual, HRT, jackalope, keinfluid, M-spec, non binary, omnisexual, pride, unsure, voidpunk, wlw, xhelp xme, yaesexual, zeloromantic, oh 13456789, ...holy shit. Well, here goes nothing, *inhales* *explains, but you can't hear me because I am now in the 17th dimension*

1

u/TheRandomRadomir 24d ago

I mean i always use LGGBBDTTQQUIAAAAPPP2SNBGVGQGNC+ and I don’t know why anyone would use any less

1

u/WikiRaze 24d ago

I use "LGBTQ+" not as a abbreviation for the specific words they're supposed to stand for. Instead I use it as a wider known synonym for GSRM (Gender, Sexual and Romantic Minorites).

1

u/Future_Sock_4927 24d ago

See that's the thing, they'll just keep cutting and cutting till they find a different thing to cut.

1

u/jan-Sika 24d ago

isnt l+ technically enough

1

u/Kodo_yeahreally 23d ago

to be honest, i always just use LGBT instead of the whole thing, but like i do it for convenience, because everyone knows the community more as "LGBT" rather than the much longer "LGBTQIA+" (keep in mind i still support everyone in that community, despite me not uttering every letter.

on the second hand i CAN'T STAND those who say "LGB", they can go to hell.

1

u/amanda_huggin-kiss 23d ago

after the first 4 letters it just gets redundant

there's a + for a fucking reason

1

u/Ancient-Handle-8137 23d ago

Cant you just abbreviate to Q or queer

1

u/RamRenegade 23d ago

LGBTI+
I dont use Q or A because
Queer is repetitive since that's the whole thing (I dont call the whole thing gay because gay is guy specific)
& Aero/ace by itself isn't queer at all because it's not gender changing or gender preference related (lack of attraction isn't a gender preference)

1

u/Estus_Flask_ 23d ago

LGBT+ or LGBTQ+ was where I stopped, the later one already having two big encapsulating terms

1

u/SynV92 22d ago

Yeah but watch what happens if you call a magazine a clip or call an m14 an AK

1

u/Relative-Banana7545 22d ago

gay people in real life: hey what’s up

1

u/lunswolfy21 21d ago

I can confirm that the full name of it is: LGBTQIAnd Gandolf the Gray, and Gandolf the White, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail's Black Knight!

(I don't know if this is offensive, sorry if it is. :'3)

1

u/reddboi386 20d ago

you can HEAR the cartoon steam coming out of their ears 😭😭😭😭

1

u/OrangetangyOrka 17d ago

theres like, levels to how many letters you can leave off of lgbtqia imo

  • LGBTQIAA2SP+ is new, you don't hear it much
  • LGBTQIAA/LGBTQIA+ is like, professional level
  • LGBTQ is more common in casual conversations
  • LGBT is similar and I'd argue atp is the acronym of the acronym
  • LGB is transphobic
  • LG is a television company

1

u/_i_dontkno 28d ago

Shoutout to my 2SLGBTQIA+ homies

2

u/Enchxnted_Crxstal 28d ago

I always wonder how this specific one came about. The L being at the beginning has a lot of historical significance

-1

u/_i_dontkno 27d ago

Sounds better

-2

u/Prometheos_II 27d ago

I guess it's because Two Souls was a thing probably even before the Europeans imigrated? But at this point, we should probably add H (Hinja and HIV victims) at the beginning too.

-1

u/CalculatedGoofball 28d ago

i just say "the queers" (or "the queer community" if i'm feeling formal) bc it just takes too long to say all the letters (and also kind of feels like we aren't human idk, it feels like LGBTQIA+ just feels like the name/serial code of a robot from wall e or smth, "queer" just feels more natural and pleasant to me)

-2

u/Conscious-Use9772 28d ago

Oh yes the genders: Lesbian Genderqueer Bisexual Transgender Questioning Asexual/Aro/Ace/Ally 2gender Sauauajw Cat Djahsj Ejshis Fisis Hsibd Jaibenw Ksihsjw and more

0

u/Open_Price_1049 27d ago

With the pic cropped, it looks like the user is having a mental breakdown writing that
