Welcome to /r/offset *Please Read*

First, for anyone new, welcome to the sub. We are all respectful people here and we like this community, but it has been regularly asked for mods to create some rules/guidelines to avoid confusion as to what this sub is about. So, while not exactly strict reinforcement with an iron fist, but a solid reminder:

• Please post offset and offset related guitar content -including mods, refins, tech tips, artist knowledge, appreciations, etc. Just not Offset the rapper, no offense just not what we do here (you will be removed without warning.)

• Posting non offset deliberately is pointless and will be met with people reminding you it's not offset so just don't do it. If you posted jazzmaster vs strat: tones/playability or whatever, that is not deliberately "look at my strat because I can't post it at this other sub," that is offset related.

• Respect everyone. Not everyone views your view, and not everyone likes what you like. It's okay to disagree or be wrong, but how we go about that defines whether it is a respectful or disrespectful conversation. It takes no extra time at all to be kind to each other, even if we don't have the exact same ideas or interests. Deliberate hate speach of any kind will NOT be tolerated. Avoid politics at all costs, there's plenty of other places to discuss it. Also, don't continually engage in arguments - it's a total waste of everyone's time.

• Please do not list your guitars for private or reverb sale, please use /R/gear4sale for that advertisement or private sale... They are far more reputable and have a fantastic system. I've used it myself safely. Should you reach out to someone privately from or in connection to this sub, we are not responsible for any mishaps of the sale you've conducted or linked to this sub.

• OFFSET RELATED does include pickup discussion, as many of us have discussed for modding our offsets. Some redditors are actual builders and have considered demonstrating their pickups or showing some appreciation but not specifically peddling them in open air. I am okay with it as long as it stays that way, we prefer to not have self advertisement like that. These people are usually major contributors to electronic and modification questions which is a great asset to our sub. You don't have to like it but it's not spam.

• Last but not least, if you post photos, please give us a reason for your post, provide a detailed comment of what's going on if it's an issue. Tell us more about your instrument if you're just doing an appreciation post... Or better yet if there is a warm story about it, share it. Please don't just post for upvotes, be engaging and conversation stimulating.

Like I said, these are not highly enforced laws but clearly defined ground rules for how we all seem to like it in this sub. They may be updated as we go along but for now this seems like a clear path of instruction. Enjoy yourself, respect others, and always try to be helpful because that makes our community stronger.

PLEASE READ: This Subreddit has decided to go dark June 12th, and will be returning to normal June 15th. Please read & understand why, and how you can help.

Greetings everyone, kinda jealous of FB right now seeing as how I can't tag everyone to see this but I am hoping that this post gets to you all well and that it is well received, understood, and leaves no one feeling abandoned or confused by this decision.

[Reddit has recently announced and decided to modify and change some policies regarding the impact of how you might like to use the platform.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/comments/13yh0jf/dont_let_reddit_kill_3rd_party_apps

Please take a moment to let that sink in and I strongly urge you to read the link and understand that though this may or may not impact the way you enjoy Reddit directly, many of the mods, independent devs who help to create the reddit experience that you might use today, and maybe even the apps that you use (Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Narwhal, etc) to enjoy the platform are potentially at risk of being forced only reddit's app or website as the official way to use reddit - and anything that we use to make your experience better outside of those two options are officially off the table unless there is a significant change to their decision.

I urge you to read in full what is going on, both here and all over reddit, however:

TLDR:

  • This subreddit will be made private (meaning you will not be able to view any of its contents) on June 12th.
  • Reddit is making it impossible for third-party apps used to browse the site to exist, as some of them will have to pay upwards of $2 million per month. This means they will most likely shut down or impose monthly fees on their users.
  • Any tools that mods use to help keep a subreddit on-topic and or relatively spam-free that were created outside of the official app or website will be locked out and no longer available.
  • You can help. Read below to learn how.

This particular sub has an incredibly resourceful, funny, proud, entertaining, and helpful +37000 users; this is an incredible place for the offset community, as a way to enjoy and be part of something alternative to the norm in the guitar world. This isn't goodbye, we aren't shutting anything down, this is us asking you to stand with us to prove a point.

[Many subs have already joined an ever growing list who are going dark in protest of this change.](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/1401qw5/incomplete_and_growing_list_of_participating/ We are standing with them. You may have already seen something similar posted to some of your other favorite subs, and if you have read and understood it, please help us explain to everyone why this is important that we join the list. Be respectful and helpful, we know you are and we appreciate it.

"Going dark" means the subreddit will be made private. You won't be able to view any of its contents until we reverse it.

What's the plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.

The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

In Offset Mod Discussion, we have decided to go dark on June 12th. We will return it to normal on June 15th. We understand the importance of the protest, and feel it is important to stand in solidarity, but we wish to not inconvenience anyone further should there be no amicable resolution. We are fully aware that in the end it is reddit's rights to do so, but that doesn't mean that what they are doing and how it has been proposed IS the right way to do it.

What can you do?

  1. Complain. Message the mods of r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
  2. Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at r/ModCoord - but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.
  3. Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
  4. Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible. This includes not harassing moderators of subreddits who have chosen not to take part: no one likes a missionary, a used-car salesman, or a flame warrior.
  5. It goes without saying, but I will make clear anyway, that users must understand and accept that this needs to happen and not to argue or harass our stance in supporting this protest. Reddit is for the people, and the content generated is by the people. We are those people, they need to understand that by a show of solidarity.

Thank you and if there is anything you'd like to ask, ask it here. I will do my best to make sure you are answered or linked correctly until the switch to private has been made.

Squier Toronado

I’m looking at this Squier Toronado that is for sale locally for £210 (US$278) described as being in “as new” condition. Money is tight so I’m hesitating on this but I’d be interested in your thoughts on both the Toronado and the price.

64 & 65 A Necks 22.5 & 24

So I won an auction on Yahoo Auctions (Japan) for a 64 A neck 22.5 Red Mustang. Paid. Get ghosted, and see the seller had relisted on Yahoo Auctions AND Yahoo Fleamarket AND Rakuten used goods site. At the same time.

Submitted many reports. Seller cancelled bid (an absurd function which allows sellers to unilaterally cancel an auction days after the auction is finished and Yahoo has your money in escrow account).

Will eventually get money back, but will never, ever trust any e-commerce site again. That guitar is still listed for sale on Yahoo and other sites, in violation of Japanese law - not to mention flagrant violation of the hosting sites.

Anyways, the universe subtly aligned and the Mustang on the left turned up, just got it a couple of hours ago. 1964 A neck, 22.5 scale, all original (except trem arm as usual). Clay dots, black bobbins, original pots and wiring, Brazilian slab, all the goodies.

The one on the right is a 1965 A neck, 24 inch scale, all original. The neck on that one is the slimmest neck I have ever seen on one of these, it is like a toothpick, The 64 neck is like that at the nut, but goes to a chunky, wider heel.

Absolutely stoked with this pair. So pleased people do not like them (while never even trying them) which means I did not have to pay anything like what similar vintage strats, teles, LPs etc go for.

Fabulous.

Thoughts on Jazzmaster player II

Post image
77 Upvotes

Hey ! I’m thinking about getting a Jazzmaster playing II on thomann, since there is no way to try it near where I live. I really want an offset guitar for the look and also for the vibrato sound.

Since I already owned a MIJ Jaguar and I had a few problems with it… almost no sustain, the infamous bridge, uncontrollable microphonic feedback with 0 gain TS9 and 1/3 drived RAT2 into a Pro Reverb …

I consider the JM because of the look, the pickups, the larger scale, the mustang bridge and the better neck. It’s (relatively) cheap, and I guess it’s playable right out of the box.

I play in a band, garage rock / punky / shoegaze stuff with lots of leads. Do you think the JM is for me ?

The Trifecta is Complete

Recently a customer friend had me take two Jazzmasters and build him what he wanted from the parts from each and then use the other parts to build another he was going to sell.

As you can see, I have a thing for Sunburst Fenders…and I was really happy with how the “leftover” one came out so we worked out a deal (I was doing a bunch of other work for him as well) and I get to keep the burst!

Aside from needing better pickups (the bridge pickup on this thing is not great…) it’s basically a new guitar and because I knew he was planning on selling it I cleaned it up and set it up really well. Absolutely love it.

I don’t make a habit of doing things like that but he’s a bit strapped for cash and I really wanted the guitar so it was a good trade deal for both of us.

Halon vs descendant vibrato

Anyone have experience with both?
I like the look of the “classic” Halon and leaning toward that purely from an aesthetic POV and the fact that it’s cheaper. Is Descendant worth the up charge?

Jazzmaster Bridge tilts forward and staying that way after using trem?

My bridge always keeps tilting forward and staying that way when I use the trem even once? Does it have to do with the pressure on the bridge I’m currently using 10 gauge strings should I put und 10,5 or 11s?

New build - an evolving design

This is a design I've built a few of, both guitar and bass, starting as a short scale guitar based on a slightly tweaked Jag shape. After three basses, I trimmed the body shape a little further and reworked the pickguard design to this, and I'm feeling pretty happy! This is the Eda bass v1.5, chambered mahogany with a quartersawn maple neck. Novak Bisonic (w coil splitter) and H22 pickups. I don't care for bridge pickups on their own on a bass, but the neck and middle positions both sound GREAT (and the bridge is cool with some chorus and verb playing up the neck a bit.) I haven't had a bound body bass since I sold my Ric many many years ago and forgot how diabolically anti-ergonomic it is, but that's the price of style. Finish is Mercedes Blue nitro lacquer.

Then there were six!

These are my guitars: five Jazzmasters are on the sofa—the MIJ Hybrid II, Troy Van Leeuwen, Squier Vintage Modified, Vintera III ’60s and Squier 40th Anniversary. The sixth, a Squier FSR JM Classic Vibe Black, is on its way. What a collection—and pure happiness!

PS
I love my guitar obsession, to be honest. I’ve played guitar in a jazz band for 30 years, and I’m fortunate to have spent all those years making music. If that’s an addiction, I’m happy with it.

What is the name of this part?

I got a jazzmaster bridge gifted to me and I know I need those things that go in the guitar to be able to mount the bridge. What is the name of the things the bridge sits on? The things that push into the body of the guitar.
I am struggling to find a place to buy them online
Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this question.

Came with a swapped mint pickguard which I much prefer over the gold that comes stock. A great deal off FB marketplace for $400. Absolutely love the thing and I completely get the hype behind them. It's got me looking forward to recording again.

2005 AVRI ‘62 Jazzmaster:
At this point I had owned a 1995 Fender “Squier Series” Strat that was my first “real guitar” as a teenager, that I got in its birth year. After 10 years of on & off playing I had finally gotten a lot more serious about playing, was getting better, started jamming with people and stuff etc. So I got a big tax return that year and decided it was time for my first “REAL real guitar”. Had been getting into sonic youth and dino jr, and was very intrigued by the Jazzmaster, seemed like the coolest guitar ever to me….luckily at this time (2005) the AVRI series was happening. I REALLY wanted a Sea Foam green one, and saw they were in stock at the typical online dealers. But I wanted to be “cool” and support my local brick & mortar super crummy, scammy guitar shop so I ordered the guitar from them instead. Ordered the Sea Foam green. Needed to put down a deposit. A few weeks later they call and say sunburst is the only color that is available (online stores all had the green in stock….) and since I gave a non refundable deposit, guess I was getting a sunburst! 2 months later, my guitar finally arrives. I ended up paying like $200 more going thru the local shop. Whole thing sucked, lesson learned. But….the guitar was really magic, I ended up playing in a gigging band for a couple years soon after I bought it,
and I got way better at guitar during this period. Owned it for 21 years now, it’s all dinged up, scratched up. Recently put new Lavaguard pickguard on it, looks legit 60s now, so stoked on this guitar. It’s amazing how crappy the stock fender tortoise guards look in comparison. NEVER goes out of tune even with heavy trem work. Love it.

2024 MIJ Traditional II Jaguar, Kinko music FSR:
Got this one a couple years ago after being hit & run while riding my bicycle by a crazy drunk/drugged lady. Somehow escaped with minor injuries and received some $ in a settlement….so I did what anyone would do, buy a new guitar! Had been seeing a bunch of the matching headstock FSR MIJ Jags and JMs on Reverb etc., they looked super nice, and figured what the hell, I’ll give the Jag a shot. Always loved sonic blue too so the choice was easy….I had ignored the Jaguar in the past because I already owned a JM, figured they were pretty much the same. Boy was I wrong. What a cool and different instrument. The shorter scale is really fun, thing is really easy to play….really love the dif tones you can get with the pickup selection. I unscrewed and flipped over the whole pickup selector plate so I wouldn’t accidentally switch off the pickups while playing aggressively, worked perfect. The build quality and finish on this guitar may be the very nicest I’ve ever seen, like it’s literally perfect, the Japanese aren’t messing around….Very happy, might be the best guitar I’ve ever played.

New Am Pro Jazz and Jag

Without dragging up the Strat debacle, what does everyone think to the new American Professional models?

The addition of the Custom Shop-ish, Bensonite-like bridge is cool, but I find the colour selections too middle of the road. Oxblood is nice, Dark Night isn't to my taste and the other are very very normal.

Also, why no Mustang in this series. There are a LOT of Mustang players!

Any more thoughts?

Sonic Mustang Neck Screws

Post image
8 Upvotes

Well I’ve been wanting a player II neck for my Squier sonic mustang for a LONG time. And finally got one. This is only the second time I’ve done a neck swap and honestly it went way smoother than the first time. That is until I went to try and set action and realized after I screwed the neck in it kinda changed angles so the strings are resting at the high fret. For some reason the screws are basically frozen in place. I was able to free 3 but one is still stuck. But I stripped them pretty bad regardless.
Anybody know if there’s anything special to these screws? Or just go pick up similar screws at Lowe’s or whatever.
Also wanted to share a pic as I feel this looks pretty sharp.
