That’s how you got into the suit. The hole gets bigger. You put it on the floor, step into the hole, work your legs down into the pants section, and pull the suit up over your head.

Then you pull the drawstring on that hole to shrink it down until it’s nearly shut. Then you pull the drawstring on the hood as much as you want, to get a waterproof seal around your face.

There is no back zipper, or anything that would require two people to put this on. It was designed for one person to be able to put on unassisted.

Then the hunter could go out in his kayak in the arctic and hunt in extremely cold temperatures, staying almost completely dry.

Like the freezing cold, and staying pretty much dry, and many other things, yes. But those first two things require this suit (as far as low-tech/no-tech goes)

They’d pull a drawstring around the hole so it got really small. Then they could wrap some more leather around that one area and tie it if they wanted to be extra dry.

From what i recall seeing this last time, that is how you put on the suit. It has a drawstring to cinch the hole a closed as possible and then a leather flap that sits behind it that is supposed to sit between the wearer and the opening to make it water tight/resistant.

If it was all for the Quatto joke, it was worth it.

The most I’ve ever laughed in a movie was smoking pot and not knowing the Quatto reveal was going to happen. My boys and I couldn’t stop. Chest hurt, stomach hurt, couldn’t breathe. Kept rewinding the cassette and getting more Quatto.

There are times I could have honestly used this.
Modern rain gear has too many layers and spots for water ingress for true oceanic storm conditions.

Yeah, an old tried and true method. Of course better synthetic adhesive has been invented since then. Semen is almost only used in envelopes nowadays, due to its unique ability to be reactivated with only a drop of saliva, and although the human variety still works best, the cheaper brands uses pig's.
