It's literally never scientists who don't want you to know stuff. Its investors and politicians who chose what science the universities are able to do

This just made me realise I don’t know any scientists in real life. Not only that but I don’t know where they would even work. What does a lab look like from the outside?

Usually like an office building, but perhaps brighter. Lots of cabinets and vents if they’re doing work with chemicals. Depends on the kind of lab too. A robotics lab won’t look like a chemistry or biology lab.

I’m an electrical engineering student in college, so I can at least speak for robotics labs. Most are indistinguishable from your average office or university building. The labs I’ve been to have garages out back for when more heavy duty machines need to be brought in, but from the outside it’s nothing special.

I did get a tour of a labs secret death laser they are making to take over the tri state area, but that besides the point. One guy was REALLY hung up about frying small mammals.

Just a regular building. Sometimes you can see some stuff from the outside but it’s usually not distinguishable from any office building

Have you driven by a university? It's full of laboratories. There's scientists everywhere. Some are Very Important and have a doctorate and fat stacks of grant money to study things while they teach, others are grad students (so basically useless), but there's a lot of them in there doing sciencey stuff all day.
