Watching this I got the weird vibe this guy both knows what he’s doing to a T and at the same time has no idea what he’s doing. Lol

I imagine him on a date and the woman asking “oh do you work out a lot?” To which he responds in Ivan Drago’s voice “I work.”

I've been commented on in my life over my strength. Never worked out, just worked alot of manual labor jobs. 🤣

I think there's a right way and a fast way, and this guys knows the right way well enough that he can get away with doing it the fast way that's 'good enough' for a truck on the side of the road
74
u/scotsman3288 2d ago
Exactly... this doesn't need to work for the next 3000km.... only the next 300km maybe. The main thing i got from this, after doing some heavy maintenance, is that this guy is pretty strong for his frame. He does this often.
38
u/MaxUumen 2d ago
From how he runs it looks like there's 1 or 2 already waiting in the queue not too far away.
67
u/buildingyesterday 2d ago
This. This is a "youre stuck in the middle of nowhwere and a tow will cost more than the load". None of this is the good way, all of this is the "itll get you to the shop" way. Dude knows his stuff.
41
u/NeverTrollin 2d ago
What really told me he’s pro pro was when he was lubing the new tire and already had it in perfect position to lean over onto the rim. This guy has done this thousands of times.
4
u/Wolfrages 1d ago
The speed that he got that on the rim told me that.
Tried doing it myself on my LT truck. Took me 15 minutes just to get them on the rim. 🤣
4
23
u/stupidape47 2d ago
I've done that before on several occasions, he knows exactly what he was doing. I worked on trucks that hauled scrap metal, needless to say driving thru the scrap yard leeds to lots of flat tires.
17
32
u/ExcellentShape185 2d ago
Does the lug nut tighten star pattern not matter for truck rims?
40
u/Font_on_a_stick 2d ago
I grew up with a diesel machine for a father that worked on big rigs. For tires of the truck part it matters but for the trailer part it doesn’t matter as much. You’ll also notice that they don’t balance and rotate those tires. Though I never could get a solid answer as to why but to my vague understanding of how dump trucks do it, middle tires like this one is just a support tire to distribute the weight evenly among the from and back tires.
17
u/viccityguy2k 2d ago
He probably knew from experience that the rim was seated flush just from his first opposite pair - so didn’t bother with star.
5
u/CompetitiveLadder609 2d ago
I know what you mean. These kind of jobs always seem like there should be a million things that you need to know to be able to do them and then you watch it happen and it's like "wow I really over thought that". But then all the nagging questions come back and you wonder if some of these people are just really under thinking it too.

working for efficiency, not accuracy. that dirt is not good for the lugsnuts and studs, seems like there are better ways that fucking up lug threads shoving the wheel down like he did.

What is that red tank/device at the end for?
107
u/AKA_Wildcard 2d ago edited 2d ago
It looks like another version of what’s called a Cheetah bead sealer. It’s basically an air cannon with a quick release valve and a narrow end that blasts a large volume of air very quickly to seal the tire. I’m so glad to see them using this over that method where they use flammable gas to get it to pop to the rim.
He actually didn’t have to use the valve stem if he had a bigger one and filled it up to a higher pressure. But there is a lot of air that has to go into a semi tire after it’s been sealed around the rim. Notice that no balancing is used here. This should be a temporary solution until they get it checked and balanced at a full service garage.
Also retreads should be outlawed. They’re cheaper then a regular tire and they are much more likely to fail with dangerous outcomes.
Just want to add, I love how they used a large wooden ramp to get the tire on. I would have also used large bottle jacks to get the side up a little higher so he didn’t have to push the tire down to slide it on.
14
u/DigMeTX 2d ago
I’m so damned tried of hitting retreads on the freeway. Last year a huge one popped out from under a car in front of me going 75 and tore my entire front bumper off. I try to keep Waze on for warning but it doesn’t catch them all.
→ More replies (2)3
5
u/PunfullyObvious 2d ago
I was wondering about the lack of balancing and assumed it must be a temporary fix since that wheel could be fairly out of balance. That said, would having so many wheels make the balance on any given one a bit less critical?
Also, seems like those lug nuts could also be on a bit less than ideal, but fine for long enough to get balanced and remounted?
8
u/ExiledCanuck 2d ago
Had a tire blow out on a big rig next to me once while I was in some traffic on the hwy, I had my window open, I thought something exploded (the tire did), and ducked down reflexively. It was insanely loud. I’ve always imagined it was a retread. I agree, that shit should be illegal
2
u/akapterian 2d ago
I've seen that when people go off roading in the snow and deflate the tires and then need to reinflate when they're back on solid ground!

Our 1-armed tour guide put a rider's tire back on his rim with starting fluid on this ride I took in WV. Tire had gotten rolled right out of the rim by a rock in a creek bed. I was about 450 yards behind and I'm telling you that wall of ether fumes rolling up that valley was intense.

u/OkBumblebee9107 2d ago
We always used bags or beads for balancing on the side of the road. I've not used wheel weights on trucks in about 26 years
40
u/apayne7388 2d ago
It blasts a lot of air into the tire all at once. It helps to get the tire seated onto the wheel. If he just tried to use the valve stem it either wouldn't have filled with air at all, or it would have taken a really long time.
19
u/ExiledCanuck 2d ago
Yeah his regular line likely would not have enough flow to seat the bead, would just sit there leaking air. Definitely needed that fast tank to pop it on at once.
3
20
u/RobertOfHill 2d ago
It blows a massive burst of air into the tire so that it can hit the rim and create a seal long enough for the air going in with the hose to hold it in place and set the bead. Then the hose fully inflate the tire.
8
u/Prudent-Dig4389 2d ago
From my very basic experience, my understanding is that if the tire isn’t particularly snug on the rim, a quick blast of air can shift the tire into place when slower air would just leak out.
5
u/OuttHouseMouse 2d ago
That is correct, you need it close enough to the bead to just blow it up, a blast of air will create enough pressure inside to blow the tire out onto the rim bead so it seats, and can hold air
73
u/PozhanPop 2d ago
Judging by the muscles on his arm, he probably does about 50 tire changes per day.
19
u/RooneyD 2d ago
Man that was a workout. I wonder if he goes to the gym, or if it's all just changing tires?
25
12
u/PozhanPop 2d ago
Pretty sure just changing tires. It is the same with a guy who delivered the bottled water jugs to our office. Skimpy high school kid when he started. 4 years later he had a massive chest and bulging arms. He used to say carrying a 5 gal jug in each hand and walking up 6 flights of stairs beat bench presses any day : )
83
u/Ben_Thar 2d ago

And then used compressed air to blow the dust out of his eyes.

14
u/lawl-butts 2d ago
Wife asked me one time why the hell I was "jumping around while screwing things in"
I was always anal about doing the star pattern on my wheels, even to the point when I'm working on anything automotive or house stuff. If I'm mating two things together I'm going to go do a star pattern on it, 75% torque til everything is mated together, and continue final 100% torqued to spec or brain-tight if none specified.
Always served me well and I haven't come across any leaks or improperly fit equipment. I'll take the extra couple minutes.

Most semi trailers, at least in the US, have a spare tire mounted to the bottom of them. In semis though it's just the tire so it can be put onto the rim on the side of the road like that

I've changed tires on a Boeing 767. Changing tires on big machines like this guy is not easy work or satisfying.
11
u/PineappleHoney3D 2d ago
Did you jack it up of was it done mid flight?
12
9
u/DoctorDinghus 2d ago
Yea a flat tire during flight causes the plane to spiral, so we have to dispatch a bunch of dudes with safety harnesses on the wing around 18000 ft (to be able to breathe or course) and drop the old tires (preferably over the ocean) and then carefully swing the new tire onto the open struts. No jacking the plane necessary.
Main tires for a 767 are about 450 lbs so it takes several guys to Tarzan swing it into place, avoiding the engine narcels in the process.

What’s the last red cylinder ?
9
u/proto-n 2d ago
Kind of jump starts the pressure. When the tire is not inflated, it has holes all around the rim, its not pressing on it (as it has, again, no pressure).
He fills the red canister with air, pressurizing it, and releases all of it into the tire all at once. At the same time, the pressure hose is connected to the regular inlet. The burst of pressure from the red tube blows the tire up, fills it much quicker than the air has a chance to escape, so it starts pressing against the rim. The hose then continues filling it up.
This has a chance of working but doesn't always, here he manages to do it on the second try. I've seen it done with a little explosion before as well, where they fill the tire with some gas and then light it, which acts the same way, instantly pressurizing it faster than air can escape.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (2)5
u/husam212 2d ago
I don't know what is it called, but it's for applying sudden high pressure so the tire bead get pushed against the rim lip.
4
u/CoverHistorical8642 2d ago
Believe it’s called a bead blaster it’s for seating the bead of the tire. Most of the time you don’t need it when you’re changing a tire. But when there’s a large side wall on the tire, it usually doesn’t have enough stiffness in the sidewall to stay up on the rim. If this happens you have to use a bead blaster to blast pressurized air in to get it to catch on the rim so it can inflate
2
4
u/silverformal 2d ago
What did the red thing do?
3
u/K4NNW 2d ago
It's a bead sealer.
2
u/No-Deer379 2d ago
Ok, but what does a bead sealer do?
5
u/K4NNW 2d ago
It forces a large volume of air into the tire at once (a task the air line and valve stem cannot accomplish) to push the sidewalls up against the rim. Occasionally, folks will use a match and some starting fluid to do the same thing.
2
u/silverformal 2d ago
Thanks. Sort of thought so. I use co2 or an air compressor to seat difficult bike and scooter beads sometimes. I’m guess this is like that x1000. I want to feel the air output lol (or do I not..?)
