All he really needed was the width of the pipe and the last step in the video.

The width of the pipe+the position of the pipe.

If you just cut a circle of the width of the pipe anywhere in the log, it wouldn't fit.

Most important the horizontal positioning, but also the vertical positioning (how far away from the edge) is important to get the log exactly to to the corner.

Each line he draws was important to get one of the informations.

This line is made with the assumption the tip of the wood is centered on the pipe, and that the angle of cut already matches the back wall. https://i.imgur.com/DGKpE0M.png

The first two lines crossing is always centered in the pipe no matter how the pipe is positioned for the log.

So the line you shows goes to this cross and is in a 45° to the front log edge.

So the assumption are, that all angles are 45°/90°

Yeah that's fine, but he's lining up the ruler with the pre-cut edge of the board, or the pointed tip that is touching the pipe. Which from measurements shown in the video, aren't guaranteed to be accurate.

You can even see how his circle isn't in the right place after he draws it with the compass. It's too far to the left, and he fudges it with the cut.
