EV Listings
Moving back to NZ from Australia and toying with the idea of an EV so I checked TradeMe…
Why the heck is my search for “Electric” engine chock full of Outlander PHEVs?? It isn’t like there’s not an option for that in the listing criteria.
Ok maybe it’s just TradeMe… I’ll try Autotrader. Worse - the Priuses and Aquas that come up in the search are LISTED as the H-word but Autotrader decided I wanted to see them anyway despite not searching for them.
Is there a site these days that’s actually worth searching on or do I have to scroll through dross to find something?

Annoys me as well. Trademe supports using NOT in the search. So “NOT Outlander" will remove them. Can chain them, so "NOT Leaf NOT Outlander", etc.

omg they still allow that?
the amout of SUVs listed as station wagons is infuriating
actually, come to think of it, maybe it's just the Outlander people who can't figure this out....

What an Outlandish comment

That was a massive pain point that people raised when I was building so we slapped a 'Not Leaf' button under the search: https://electricdreams.co.nz/

Put -outlander in your search terms. It’s always been a problem with dealers being dumb, back in the day I used to regulatory find automatic cars listed as manual because they had tiptronic

That dredged up a memory drenched in loathing. I hated that so damn much
In what world does any user after a manual want a tiptronic? By the same merit, people looking for autos don’t want manuals so they miss the listing.
Surely had to be some sort of integration or automation issue with someone’s auto-listing tool? Can’t imagine dealers actually think they’d sell an auto to someone that way.

That's a geat other side of the coin observation. I suspect the dealers are some combination of thick and lazy.

I noticed this too when looking for AWD EVs below $40k. There are actually a small number of those, but you have to trawl through all Outlanders incorrectly listed as EVs and the Leafs and RWD Teslas incorrectly listed as AWD.
You can mitigate somewhat by refining your filter for engine size 1000cc or less - that eliminates the Outlanders.
I presume the issue is caused by incompetent car dealerships who don't know how to do a trademe listing, or they have some automated software that syncs from their own database that isn't correctly configured.

The other thing that fucks me off with listings from certain dealers is they don't mention battery capacity, health, or range for EVs. Turners are particularly bad but others are too. EVCity in CHCH is particularly good example of what should be listed

Hah this was the reason I made Electric Dreams: https://electricdreams.co.nz/
Hopefully more private sellers start listing as it's free!

What annoys me about TM search is when you select EV, but then let's say you go back and select a brand that has no EVs listed, it will unselect your EV filter, so then when you go and select another brand that has EVs, it will show you all the cars.

Trademe is crap but its the best we have, it crushes anyone trying to do better :/

Not exactly the same but if you like to browse dealer listings you can try my site www.carspy.co.nz ! not really a trademe competitor but kinda allows you to ignore it if you are specifically looking for dealer listings

There's a couple, but not many.
Top trick if you using trademe and looking for cheapest EV, but wanna exclude leaf, put "and -leaf" in search. You can't put just "-leaf" in query, it must have another word so you some random most common word like "the -lead".
There is no free lunch tho - next cheapest ones are ix3 which aren't that good nor that cheap lol.

Dear u/the_pretender_nz
On TradeMe:
Go to Cars,
select the make/model, or whatever
go to 'Refine',
scroll to 'fuel type',
choose 'zappy-zap-zap' or whatever it says.
...And Bingo's your uncle.
You can actually START with the last three steps. There are currently 3582 electric-only cars for sale on TM, according to that.

Yes. That’s what I did. And had to scroll through too many ads for Outlanders and other PHEVs.
I’m from NZ, I used TradeMe for many years before I moved over here. I know how it works - or rather how it should.

There is, you can search by fuel type, I.e electric, hybrid or plug in hybrid. A couple of dealers have screwed up their listings, but it’s not that much of a deal. Are you just using a keyword search?

Because dealers who should know better continue to list them incorrectly. Only 23/60 Mitsubishi EV listings on TM are for Outlanders, I wouldn't call that "chock full" by any stretch.

You sure you’re doing it right?
I just searched and set the filter for electric fuel type and there’s not a single hybrid out of 3000 listings

u/the_pretender_nz 23h ago
Yup. Just to make sure, on TM I just filtered by Electric, Make: Mitsubishi Model: Outlander and there are 23 results.

u/Subwaynzz 22h ago
That’s not chock full.

u/the_pretender_nz 20h ago
Jeebus it was an example. There’s others in there. But 1 is too many. And if you’re scrolling on mobile and they’re all clustered together, on my phone it shows basically one at a time. So that’s a lot of scrolling to get past dross that shouldn’t be in there in the first place.
And also doesn’t excuse the Autotrader ones.

Oh I totally hear you. I had the same issue when I searched a few months back. It almost seems like whoever is entering the listings doesn't know the differences and TradeMe does not correct them. Hybrids are listed as PHEV and there are also no categories to select plug in only. I also recall there is no option to sort on range. PHEVs are also appearing in full EV results..

u/dissss0 Kia Niro (62kWh) 23h ago
It's worst than that - Trademe gets fuel type from the plate you enter but lets you override.

OH ARE YOU SERIOUS??! I was gonna mention that in Aus the car sites can get all the details from a database so it’s not a problem, at least with the main ones like CarSales…. Now you’re telling me they CAN do that but just don’t???!

u/kianjz_ 23h ago
Hey! You can try my site www.carspy.co.nz, it allows you do to much better searches and clearly separates EV, PHEV, and regular Hybrid, and allows you to exclude stuff easily so you don't have to see a million leafs when searching for cheapest EVs for example. Try it out and let me know what you think!
