United Steelworkers union workers rally to send message to US Steel
U.S. Steel told the United Steelworkers union there was no need to start negotiations early this year, as it expected to get a deal done by the time the contract expired in September, USW Local 1011 President Mark Lash said.
United Steelworkers union members march across Broadway as they rally for a fair contract outside the gates of the Gary Works steel mill. The union has been negotiating with U.S. Steel.
But that Sept. 1 deadline came and went, and the two sides remain apart on many issues at the bargaining table a month later.
U.S. Steel repeatedly told union leaders in Pittsburgh it believed the membership would vote to accept its proposal, so the union brought steelworkers outside the Gary Works steel mill on Wednesday to show they would stand strong for a new contract, Lash said.
"We should have had a contract by expiration on Sept. 1, but they keep putting up proposals that are less than what our members are willing to accept," he said. "We're bringing our members to them to let them know that they know what's on the table and they're not willing to accept it and they need to do better or they're not going to get a contract."Several hundred steelworkers rallied in downtown Gary on Wednesday, marching to the gates of Gary Works to demand a fair contract.
Congressman Frank Mrvan, Gary Mayor Eddie Melton, Lake County Sheriff Democratic Nominee Jerry Williams and several union leaders and political candidates all spoke to the crowd.
"We will not take concessions. The concession stand is closed," Mrvan said. "We won't give up what we earned. Northwest Indiana is Region strong. We have grit. We have a skilled workforce. We need to let these corporations like U.S. Steel and BP know we will not stand idly by, not only as a union but as a community."
Williams said he intended to be the most pro-union sheriff ever in Lake County. Melton said the city supports the steelworkers and would do whatever it could to help.
"As with economic development, the workers are the heart and soul of everything we do," Melton said.

U.S. Steel is proposing cumulative 19.3% pay increases over five years, no healthcare premiums and no caps on healthcare costs. The steelmaker has proposed $4,000 signing benefits and no changes to the Carnegie Pension Plan, Steelworker Pension Trust, profit sharing or holiday schedule.
Now owned by Nippon Steel, U.S. Steel has proposed changes to healthcare, saying it needs to keep healthcare costs under control.
The union has a number of concerns, including a lack of successorship language to protect the contract if U.S. Steel were sold again, investment in the mills and pay increases to keep up with inflation, as well as higher out-of-pocket costs for steelworkers, Lash said.
"They're still talking about increasing out-of-pocket expenses. They're still talking about increasing our deductibles. They're still talking about getting rid of our successorship language," steelworker Ryan Kominakis said. "There's not a person in this crowd who wants to make concessions. I've worked in that mill for 14 years. We deserve dignity and respect. We deserve dignity and respect and should settle for nothing less."
United Steelworkers union members rally for a fair contract outside the gates of the Gary Works steel mill. Jack Tipold speaks to the crowd.
Steelworker Jack Tibold said steelworkers needed to send a message that they wouldn't agree to pay more out of pocket for healthcare and effectively freeze their wages amid a soaring cost of living.
"This is about our families, our communities and our neighbors," Tibold said. "This is our house. We make the steel here."
Retired steelworker Vern Beck, former president of the NIPSCO union, said NiSource took retirement benefits from utility workers in other states, and the union had to take a stand to protect what it had.
"Now that I look back, I remember the times I fought and won the things that now make my retirement a good retirement," Beck said. "It's up to you. Are you going to cower? Or are you going to fight for what you want?"

Steve Minchuk with the Northwest Indiana Federation of Labor said the Region rises and falls with organized labor.
"Union workers are the pillars of the community," Minchuk said. "We're the football coaches. We're the T-ball coaches. We keep the mom-and-pop shops open."
Supporters from the community also joined the steelworkers, including Joseph Conn from Hobart, who would like to see investment in greener steelmaking technologies.
"U.S. Steel needs to get the steel industry into the 21st century," Conn said. "I encourage Nippon Steel to invest more in Northwest Indiana."

Do you think Hobart switching to EV cop cars is a good or bad idea.
I personally oppose them because they literally go towards cars that literally have a chance of thermal Runaway because whenever a Lithium-Ion battery catches on fire not only is it harder to extinguish. But it also releases more toxic gases than a gasoline fire. If you live in Hobart your taxpayers dollars are literally going towards electric vehicles that have already polluted the Earth just from the battery plants.

Well Frontier actually did it they actually replaced our routers.
So we had an issue with these Amazon Eero routers where after a while the internet with just abruptly go out for 10 seconds and then go back to normal. Now I'm still using the old ones with my temporary backup Xfinity and it's been working fine. I'm starting to think it was just the fiber box but nevertheless they replaced our routers for free and me and my family are going to set it up tomorrow and will give you updates on if they work or not.

Residents puzzled why NIPSCO bills weren't lower after two weeks without power
We definitely had to do a double-take when we got our NIPSCO bill covering this period, as we were without power for a full week and barely saw a decrease from a normal month. I'm curious what others experienced.

Spa Recommendations
Hello, all. I've been wanting to surprise my partner with a nice little spa day, because she deserves it. Massage, mani, pedi, the whole shebang. Do any of you swell people have any recommendations on good, cost effective spas in the area? I have never been to or paid for a spa treatment, so I have no basis for comparison. Thank you!

Highland What's going on with the backup on 41 around Meijer?
Is it really because there's construction down to one lane for a block or is there more going on? Four lanes is already not sufficient enough to accommodate the traffic on this damn road.
