Copies of Dune Encyclopedia from eBay are hundreds of dollars. The one print copy you can get cheaply is a print-on-demand bootleg that's been passed through an OCR and poorly proofread. The scans of the original publication are poor quality.

Well, I don't really have the money to shell out for a used copy of a long out-of-print book, but what I do have is plenty of free time and a high tolerance for tedium. So I did an OCR pass on the poor scan of the original and I copied everything into an MS-Word doc, and re-typeset the entire book, page by page. I cleaned up the images as well as I could in Photoshop. I even made a Fremen font so that I could properly recreate the entry on the Fremen language.

I finished the project last week and today the print copy arrived from Lulu.com!

Here are the print ready files, if you would like your own...

First, I just want to say I am massively Dune-pilled. I love Frank's books, I love the Villnueve films, Dune Prophecy, and I think this is genuinely the greatest franchise ever. Dune is such a powerful human story. It's our story. But in preparation to see Dune Part Three this December I decided to read Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, and now Paul of Dune. I enjoyed Messiah WAY more than anticipated. Yes, there's far less action but the philosophy and quiet chaos occurring in Paul's personal life and interpersonal relationships was extremely gripping. My only criticism was that it is so short. Children of Dune is still my current favorite though.

But, after being in the community for a relatively brief amount of time I've only heard derision and antagonism towards Brian Herbert's section of the universe but I wanted to give Paul of Dune a shot since it's technically the "direct" sequel to Dune and I think it will be adapted in Dune Part Three. And after just completing it I gotta say......I was SURPRISED how much I loved reading this book! Yes, Brian's writing isn't as contemplative and insightful as Frank's BUT the highs of this book are VERY high to me. The first chapter that made me lock in was when Gurney witnessed firsthand how unbelievably sadistic and cruel the Fremen's conquest of the universe was on the Galacia campaign. Reading Gurney compare the Femen to the Harkonnen's was so sobering especially when later he's given charge of Giedi Prime and he relives the horror of his childhood in the slave pits. I loved Paul participating in the Jihad on Ehknot and a Qizarate priest looking directly at him, not recognizing him, but declaring him blessed by God. So powerful and I believe we will see that scene depicted in Dune Part Three. The part where Paul literally evokes The Odyssey seems almost destined by fate to happen on screen too. I loved the plot of the Fenring's developing their scheme and it culminating with Alia proving she is the most dangerous scorpion of them all. At first I HATED the flashback subplot with Paul on Caladan in the War of Assassins UNTIL it clicked in my head what was really going on. Paul in this book as he develops as Emperor Muad'Dib is tethered between abiding by Duke Leto's honorable model of leadership and becoming a CRUEL IRON FISTED VENGEFUL DESPOT like either Shaddam or Viscount Moritani. His flashback story shows the wonderful model Leto laid out for him but the book shows how in order for the Golden Path to reach fruition Paul has to wield and master those darker aspects of leadership. And the scene where he receives the vision of Caladan being under siege which triggers him to STERILIZE his first planet? Haunting. This book gives us wonderful scenes glimpsing into a "proto-God Emperor". But Paul remains wonderfully human throughout. He holds on as long as he can. If Dune Messiah is a 10/10 then I'm going give Paul of Dune a spicy 9/10. It's a meditation on what it means to be the Kwisatz Haderach. It's about the moral dilemma of leadership. God, even THALLO as a failed Tleilaxu Kwisatz Haderach was so compelling. And the fact ALL THREE of the Kwisatz Haderach's in this book ALL ultimately self-destruct in some fashion is SO interesting. Margot and Hasimir were such great villains. Marie was so interesting as their own "weaponized messiah". Children being groomed and developed as weapons in this book creates nice foreshadowing for Children of Dune in retrospect.

I don't have much interest in the vast majority of Brian's books but Paul of Dune has shown me that Brian still has a connection to the genetic memory of his father. This book felt like a complicated love letter to his dad in a lot of ways. I might give Winds of Dune a shot too because Alia and Jessica are my favorite characters.

"Ya hya chouhada!"

EDIT: Wow, I can't believe r/Dune nuked my post?

Support this guy so he can make more of these animatics, really enjoying them

He's been working as a professional music production and decided to combine two of his favorite things for this side project: Progressive metal and Dune.

I decided to read the original Dune books again and to read all of the new books as well this time. This is my progress so far ss=short story

I really enjoyed this book. Good action, succinct and to the point. Giving us two stories was great, and they did it in a way that felt natural. I don't understand the hate for these books, are the other ones as good, and what's the opinion on this one?

/r/duniverse is free and a much better name IMO

Seriously, why do they have to keep rehashing the facts over and over... even in the same book...

Can these books be read out of order?

So, I've heard the last few months about a Dune reboot: http://www.syfy.com/syfywire/dune-reboot-two-movies-two-years-denis-villeneuve

With all the books from Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, and even books outlined by Frank Herbert's notes after he died, there is so, so much more to tell from the history of Dune. I mean, the Titans, the League of Nobles, the Thinking Machines, the beginning of the Guild, the Mentats, the Navigators.... There's. So. Much. More. Than Paul and his family fued with the Harkonnens. Com' on! This could really take off with intriguing stories only told via audiobook, written on paper, and read in books.

That's also another thought... Would a series of movies or a series of shows.... Should they start with what is already known, or start afresh with history and intrigue into the story we all already know?

Spoilers Ahead: What an ending. I hated to see Gilbertus die to that half-manford, but he walked a thin line for far too long, it was bound to happen. I kind of feel sorry for the demon robot Erasmus too, he's not so bad once you get past the whole human vivisections stuff.

Valya's betrayal and murder of Dorotea really sets the tone for what's to come, though I found myself liking her over the past two books, so it was disappointing to see her stick to her Harkonnen ways.

Joseph Venport just can't seem to catch a break. Obviously assassinating Salvador Corrino was a terrible decision, but I was rooting for him and Norma to succeed nonetheless. Roderick would have undoubtedly sided with Venport if the emperor's vessel was never found.

Vor can't catch a break either. Tula's murder of Orry wasn't shocking, but to do it on the wedding night is cold blooded.

The Great School series has become my favorite of the nudune, and I can't wait to start on Navigators!

Just wondering if anyone knows of plans for more Dune universe books now that navigators is out in the world?

I got into the Duniverse from the FH books, as most did. After I finished reading his books, I learned that there are more books in the series, but I didn't really understand what the difference was between the old and the new.

It didn't bother me, I simply wanted to experience more of the Duniverse, so I read the other books, and I'm still reading them when I can. My goal now is to have all the series in English, and read them all in English.

Since I understand that the nuDune books are written by BH, I do not expect them to be FH's books. Both writers (BH/KJA) are different writers than FH, and one can't be the other. All I seek is the expansion of the Duniverse, and this is what BH/KJA are doing.

Hello all

Yesterday someone posted on r/dune about a book by BH/KJA, and it got some snarky comments being not a book by FH. It is uncool imo, and I'm sick of it.

I say we spend more time here, and find a way to increase the influence of this sub. I suggest the first thing we do is post something first here, and then on r/dune.

Also, dear mods, I would like to ask to consider banning or at least warning people that come here and just make a snarky remark, with no contribution to the post's discussion.

Hi everyone.

We have a matter to discuss, and I feel that it's only fair to involve the community in the decision as to whether or not there's a reason for this sub to remain active.

nuDune was created three years ago by a member of the Dune sub out of the desire to have a place for people to discuss the Dune prequels without the intervention of elements of the Dune community disrupting due to their dislike of the new books. This commonly happened in the main Dune sub, and to be honest, it still happens sometimes.

A moderator in the Dune sub suggested to me that we remove the link to nuDune from the sidebar in the main sub, because he felt that it implied that officially, discussion of the prequels was not meant to take place in the main sub, when that is definitely not the case.

We want discussion of all of the Dune canon to be welcome in the main sub, so I am inclined to agree with him on that count.

However, as the sole moderator of nuDune, I find myself wondering if there's a purpose to keeping this sub open, as it in a way detracts from the growth of the community in the main sub.

So, I ask you - What do you think? Is there merit in retaining this sub? Should we do away with it?

The membership here is small, and the discussion is rather slow, but not dead. What happens next is up to you. I welcome your opinions on the matter.

Thanks!
