In a future Smash Bros game, how would a Mario & Luigi duo work as a separate character from the regular Mario and Luigi?

• Upvotes

My idea is they would work like the Ice Climbers, though since the Mario Bros. have different models from each other, they can't have alternate costumes that alter who's the lead Bro like what the Climbers have. So, I think Mario will always be the lead Bro and Luigi will always be computer-controlled like the second Ice Climber.

They could also incorporate plenty of Jump and Hammer attacks into their moveset, with a footstool dealing damage and Meteor Smashing airborne enemies.

On This Day On This Day in Nintendo History: Pokémon Blue

On this day (October 15) in Nintendo history...

  • Pokémon Blue  was released in 1996 for the Game Boy in Japan. In this role-playing game, developed by Game Freak, you begin your journey in Pallet Town as a young boy. After a dangerous brush with wild Pokémon, Professor Oak teaches you how to capture Pokémon, and then sends you on your way as a fledgling Trainer. During your journey through Kanto, you must capture Pokémon to record their information in your Pokédex, as well as become a better Trainer by competing in Gyms scattered throughout the region.

What are you favourite memories of these games? How do you think they hold up today? Hash it out in the comments.

What if: Project Atlantis released as intended in 1997

I think all us Nintendo fans know about this. It's 1996. The oriignal Game Boy's sales are in deep decline, and it's in the process of being sunsetted. Nintendo R&D1 starts work on Project Atlantis, a next-gen handheld with a color screen and 32 bit graphics, but no backwards compatibility with the Game Boy. It's set to release in 1997.

Project Atlantis is derailed by a couple of on-brand twists of fate.

1.) Pokemon. Pokemon's massive success gives the original Game Boy the mother of all second winds, completely reversing its sales decline.

2.) Gunpei Yokoi leaves Nintendo to go into business for himself. He partners with Bandai on the WonderSwan, which spooks Yamauchi so much he orders what's left of Yokoi's old team to create a color Game Boy in 10 months to beat the WonderSwan to market.

Both of these things result in Project Atlantis being tabled for the Game Boy Color, an overclocked Game Boy with a color screen. Instead of being sunsetted in 1997, the original Game Boy architecture (with color enchancements) lasts a good ways into the new millenium, buoyed in large part by Pokemania. By the time work resumes on a 32 bit handheld (which became the Game Boy Advance), technology had evolved to the point where it could be smaller, cheaper, better on batteries, and fully BC with the Game Boy and Game Boy Color libraries.

My what if is: What if these twists of fate didn't happen? What if Project Atlantis released in 1997 as intended? How different would Nintendo's history be?

Five years ago we promised our Nintendo Switch players a big update. I'm proud to announce that Hypercharge: Unboxed gets it this Thursday, with crossplay!

Five years ago we promised you we would not abandon the Nintendo Switch version of Hypercharge, and I know that for a long time it must have looked like we had.

It's been a very difficult five years for us as team. As many of you know, we're an extremely small indie studio. I also want to say I'm sorry, because five years is a long time to wait, and in many ways it's been just as frustrating for us as it has been for you.

For those who don't know, we started making Hypercharge back in 2015. That's over ten years ago, and we haven't really stopped working on it since. We've managed to launch on every major platform and built cross-platform support in house all by ourselves, and I really cannot overstate how much work and pressure that has been, and the toll it has taken on a small team like us.

Most of the delay came from work you will never see. We moved to a newer version of Unreal Engine, replaced our entire networking backend so cross-platform play could work at all, and rebuilt parts of the game to handle more enemies on screen and much larger levels. On top of that, we needed to step back at times for our own sanity. We're also real people behind the screen. We have our personal lives, our families and our mental health, and we've each gone through a lot personally over these five years.

Hypercharge has been eleven years of our lives. It's a labour of love and our passion project, and waking up every day to make the game we always wanted as kids, with my closest friends, is something we're very thankful for.

It launches on October 15, 2026, and it brings the Switch version level with every other platform, with full cross-platform support. Thank you for waiting for us. It means more than you know!

The main things coming:

- Full crossplay, so Switch players can play with friends on Steam, Xbox and PlayStation
- A story mode added to the existing wave-based mode, with cinematic comic book style cutscenes and optional objectives
- 6 new bosses: Cyber T. Rex, Missile Truck (DAMBUSTER), Mothership, L.E.D Blimp, Major Evil and Gunship (BH60 Attack Helicopter)
- 6 new enemy types: Ninja Joe, Tiny Trotters, bRobot, Alien Queen, Alien Queenlet and Shock Soldiers
- 3 new maps: The Funderdome, Adventure Dunes and Rental Lair
- 5 new weapons: Freeze Ray, Missile Launcher, Double Barrelled Machine Gun, Mine Launcher and Teleport Gun
- 2 new playable characters: Major Evil and Teddy the Teddy Bear
- New game modes: Infection, Capture the Battery and King of the Hill, plus overhauled Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch
- A completely overhauled user interface, including new play and lobby menus
- New skins and heads, including Teddy's 6 skins, Army Men Green and Tan, Liquid Teal and Evil Damage, and many more
- A full character packaging and customisation rebuild, plus engine, networking and localisation upgrades throughout

Thank you again!

Joe

‘No offense to Zelda’ but GTA 6 and COD Modern Warfare 4 are ‘the two biggest games of the year’, Activision exec says

Activision’s Tyler Bahl suggests that the Zelda/GTA narrative is off, and that CoD stands next to GTA as one of this year’s two “biggest” games. What do we think, folks?
