The athlete with Down syndrome, noticing the sadness of his defeated opponent, immediately ran up to him and raised his hand up.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a person with down’s syndrome that was a shitty, devious person..seems like we’re the ones who are handicapped when it comes to the things that really count
26
u/rainshowers_5_peace 9h ago
They're human beings. They need to be taught "no means no", "don't touch that", and "use your indoor voice" like any other person.
They need to group up in a therapeutic and supportive environment to grow into good people. But yes, most are agreeable and fun loving.
6
u/HITWind 7h ago
Considering we have to be taught those things too, and need similar environments to grow into good people too, that's even. We are the ones who are handicapped by intelligence morally. It's like... they live up to the standard we say we have. If everyone was like them, no doubt we wouldn't have the state of affairs of language and technology to be able to have them be how they are here, but still, in a sense we've outlined a game that they can beat us at because of our handicap.
10
u/booze_clues 7h ago
They’re just people man. Down syndrome doesn’t make you more or less likely to be a morally good person or anything like that.
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/InspirationallyDisadvantaged
2
u/HITWind 3h ago
I didn't say they were more or less likely to be morally good because they're down syndrome. I said our intellect puts us at a moral handicap, like in golf. Our ego, our reasoning, being more complex is like a maze that is more complex. Being simple minded is easier to be genuine and forgiving. This is entirely different from the "Magical" category from your like which is what I believe you are insinuating I'm saying. I am saying something different. I am not putting them on a pedastal, while it could be argued that the earlier comment saying something similar, was.

An unfortunate naming by the diagnosing physician, Dr John Langdon Down.
But yes, beautiful awesome spirits, for sure.

An awful lot of genetic disorders are named after the scientists that studied or discovered them. Dr Down was the guy who studied and categorised this syndrome, which can also be called trisomy 21.

Eh, they can sometimes be shitty people like everyone else. A friend's brother who had Down had a penchant for stealing your shit when you weren't looking. He got violent when you tried to get it back.
Not generalizing, though. It was just this one dipshit in particular.
Come to think of it, that entire family was pretty messed up.

I wonder what the proposal meeting was like when someone was proposed: "Let's have people with down syndrome fight each other"

It's such an absurd take. Special needs people have been participating and competing in sports for as long as sports... cuz people like to play sports, special needs or no.
What a weird comment to be the second highest voted comment in the thread. It's as confusing as it is insulting.
81
u/OrthodoxAtheist 9h ago
No need to be insulted - the average person is not an expert on down syndrome and the genomic/biological differences resulting therefrom. For example:
"Atlantoaxial Instability (AAI): Many individuals with Down syndrome have increased ligamentous laxity (looseness), which can lead to AAI—an excessive movement of the top two vertebrae in the neck. High-impact or collision activities that strain the neck (like wrestling, tackle football, or heavy contact sports) can raise the risk of spinal cord injury."
That said:
"Adapted and Monitored Activities: Sports like swimming, basketball, track, skiing, judo, and modified fitness training (including supervised non-contact boxing programs like Down to Box that focus on balance and coordination) are often encouraged as safe ways to build strength and confidence."
So perhaps, rather find such comments insulting, see them as an opportunity to educate the populace at large. I'm certainly learning as a result of this thread.

Well said, I think the polarization of political discourse has added grit to unrelated discussions.

Because derision towards a marginalized group can stem into real world danger and violence. People tend to be sensitive when threatened.

Imagine sanctioning a sports league where people with disabilities compete on a level playing field against each other. Sounds ridiculous. I'm sure it will never become a thing.
2
u/perplexedtv 7h ago
Are the belts indicative of grades or just for show?
5
u/EveningSky3731 5h ago
In competitive karate they often give one competitor a red belt and one a blue belt for judging purposes (so they can hold up a red flag for one and a blue flag for the other when they score). The belts are just for that competition and not indicative of rank.

u/Happy-Estimate-7855 12h ago
I got a laugh out of that (a bunch of evil rich folk coming up with ways to mock the people beneath them), but I think the more realistic scenario was "We should let people with Down Syndrome fight if they want to," in the tournament context.

“Let’s have people with Down syndrome kick balls at each other”
Oh you mean play soccer like everyone else is allowed to do without being judged or having snide shit said about them.
If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.

u/mcnuggets0069 9h ago

I sincerely doubt that was the framing. People with Down Syndrome may have a genuine interest in combat sports like any person without Down Syndrome. But for a variety of reasons may be unable to compete in a more traditional circuit.
Is the Special Olympics about getting a bunch of disabled people to run around, or is it about offering a space for disabled people to follow their ambitions in a safe way?
5
u/RealCharlieNobody 11h ago
They're able to make their own decision to compete, like anyone else. Never heard of the Special Olympics?

They're not pets and they're not fighting for your entertainment.
People with down syndrome can choose their own hobbies and careers.

u/PloppyPants9000 11h ago
People with downs syndrome have a unique ability to find joy in life, so if they wanted a fight, by all means, let them have that joy.
3
u/xbrian63x 10h ago
From the style of uniform they’re wearing, it looks like they were performing kata. So no physical contact between competitors, but instead, a demonstration of movements and technical ability

Why does everyone have to always think the worst of a situation. They're athletes who trained and want to compete. Nothing more nothing less, saying otherwise is intentionally distasteful. Let these dudes enjoy their accomplishments not because they have down syndrome but because they're humans who deserve the right to compete like everyone else. I can't imagine what you think about the special olympics.

u/ChampionshipAlarmed 10h ago
Oh i have a kid with a similar conditions in my Taekwondo school, he's been begging me to Go to a tournamet for 2 years (But I couldn't find one to sign him up ) I met someone from a club I was Inas a kid and we made arrangements and He was the happiest person in this planet when I told him he can come to the next tournament. He came in for extra lessons for weeks and trained really hard and I am sure he will be amazing.
I don't see anything wrong with giving everyone a chance to competed and show their abilities and how hard they worked to get where they are now.

u/buddyto 10h ago
without trying to sound bad, it totally depends. On our city, we had a case where the person in question was really problematic, sexual assaults every other week, really bad guy, he was actually evil and he would laugh. Of course you can argue that he doesnt understand, but trust me, you could see that he -at least- understood what he was doing.

There's a large group of people with disabilities that use the pool in the same complex I do my workouts at. It's interesting to see how far people with severe mental disabilities can go from one end to the other on the niceness scale. Most of them are nice and polite, but a few are really mean and spend the whole time (that I'm around them) threatening and bullying the others in the group. It's almost like on some level they know they have a severe disability, and are stuck and miserable, force to live that life.
