Help understanding subnetting

I’m taking an intro to networking course my question is if there’s an easy way to understand subnetting. Especially when you want to make 4 subnets how do you know what the ranges will be for each 4 subnets

Like, whatever you pick? The point is that it's arbitrary, you just take the range of addresses you have available and split it somehow - usually also leaving space for future expansion.

It's effectively naming things - adding "names" for groups IP addresses, and you usually want to establish some "naming convention" for that grouping, but you have a lot of flexibility in how you can do that.
