Discussion Concerned about MW4's staying power. NSFW
So, I thought I would share my $90 worth about MW4. Over the past 4 weeks I've heard many opinions from the community. The majority fall to the match making. To that note I really don't care where the devs go. I can play either style and I'll do just fine. However, unlike some who have canceled their preorders I am a paying customer and I'm going to chime in. I had about 30 hours of play time between the two beta weekends. My biggest concern with this game is that Infinity Ward needs to find it's footing and get the game where it needs to be.
At the beta's launch we basically got a reskinned version of the MW2 reboot. Yes, they got rid of the charge up perk system, added Ninja, and cleaned up the visual diarrhea when you fire your gun. However, aside from that it was pretty much a reskin of their last game. This didn't go over well with the community. So, weekend 2 we saw a major pivot something more resembling what we currently have in BO6, B07 and MW3 in terms of spwans and TTK. Their stated goal at the end of the beta was they were going to try to find a middle ground for launch and get the game where it needs to be. I don't doubt they will pick a middle ground for launch, and what they release will be reasonably playable. There are a lot of really good ideas present in the beta including the progression systems options
I am getting the game at launch and will likely play a couple hundred hours of multiplayer over the course of the first 90 days of it's life cycle. I am curious what happens after that though. I just finished the season 6 battle pass for BO7 yesterday. I've been level 1,000 since june and I still logged in and played a few hours of multiplayer this evening. I am wondering if I will still be playing MW4 at this time next year, or will it putter out a few weeks into January. I am still playing BO7 because their create a class system offers a lot of class structure versitility, we have a wide range of movement options, the weekly and seasonal support has been good and consistant. Last we also have zombies as a fall back mode if I get bored with multiplayer.
Infinity Ward by contradiction is using a fairly rigid 3 perk create a class. The mobility is very limited. I am not talking about omnimovement, but the run, walk and strafe speeds are significantly slower than the last 3 years of COD. I am not sure what their weekly and seasonal support will be. However, the biggest concern is that multiplayer is all I am going to have to hold my attention this year. I haven't touched warzone in about 4 years and have no desire to revisit it. Likewise, if DMZ is strictly going to be PvPvE I am not evening going to boot it up. I am not going to invest 45 minutes into a one life mode where someone can cheat and waste an hour of my gaming time. So, I am curious how well their multiplayer will hold up over the course of the year.
There is going to come a point with MW4 where Infinity Ward is going to have to make a major pivot in the multiplayer experience. I am refering to like happened with MW3 where Sledge Hammer had to rebalance their loadout system extensively to keep the player base interested in the game. Or, like back in COD WW2 where they had to redo the whole division system and add infinite sprint to the game. Once those changes happened the game was better received by the community. Back in MW2 Infinity Ward had someone at the top with a stick rammed up their rear end. They wouldn't let the charge up perk system go and it killed the game off. This year given the drastic changes during the beta that doesn't seem to be the case. But, the question is whether they will pivot in time to keep the game relevant or not.
