"What musical should I listen to next?" unified thread

One of the most common questions we get on this subreddit is "what should I see/listen to, here's the stuff I like". It's a valid question, but it's tiring to see a dozen of those threads every week, so this will serve as both a stickied thread of suggestions and as a home for new visitors to r/musicals who would ask that question. (As a result, new "what should I listen to threads" will be redirected here and deleted.)

Below, you'll find a list of popular musicals in alphabetical order along with suggestions for what might interest you based on that. This list is mostly vibes-based, with some inclusion of the same or similar composers or subject matter. The shows I name are taken from my own personal list of shows I've listened to (350+), the vast majority of which will be available on Spotify.

The shows I chose to make suggestions for are heavily skewed toward recent shows because that's what felt like good fits. If you're interested in a show not named below and want to know what to listen to next, comment below and I'll add a line for it (assuming I know it well enough to make educated suggestions).

If you enjoyed... Consider checking out...

Discussion Folks, we’re gonna take a break on the “me too” games.

These “judge me on my top five”, “tell me your favorite and I’ll tell you if you’re cool”, “here’s five, which is your favorite” threads box everything else out cause everybody feels the need to add their own. I did the tier list thread to try and nip it in the bud, but folks just shifted to different me too games, and it’s rapidly spiraling.

I’m calling a temporary moratorium on those threads. They may resume in the future (at a date TBD), but for now, all new threads of that nature (beginning midnight EDT tonight) are going to be locked, deleted, and all of the existing replies wiped out.

If you want to discuss a show, great, but “rate my taste” isn’t it.

What musical for you has an amazingly over the top grandiose score

what musical makes you feel like this while you listen. For me it is the Frankenstein musical. every song feels like the composer and entire orchestra decided to play an orchestra with the same rage and vigor as ratm in the prime.

Songs about framing someone for a crime?

Hey all, it's ya boy back at it again looking for song suggestions for my jukebox musical project. Currently I'm hunting for a good song that's basically one character framing another - could be for murder, could be for any kind of crime or misdeed at all.

'A Story Told' from The Count of Monte Cristo is pretty damn close to what I'm after, but so many of the lyrics are so specific that it would be difficult to translate into a different context. So I'm wondering if y'all have any other suggestions for me that I might not have heard of?

It also doesn't necessarily have to be from an actual musical (though ideally it would be), as long as it has that kind of vibe to it, like a character in the scene is singing it.

Thanks for any ideas!

I'm a big fan of Paris the musical by Jon English. Does anyone know any information on where to find the 2017 version that was in Melbourne?

Obviously this is just for discussion’s sake. My pick, and the song that sparked this post, is Four Jews In a Room Bitching from Falsettos

Robin Hood musical with the music written by Chris de Burgh

I saw the musical three times in Germany in 2022 and I was wondering why such a rather popular story like Robin Hood is not a thing in other countries, especially in the UK. The music is fantastic and the story engaging plus music written by Chris de Burgh! You even get his song "Don't Pay the Ferryman" with different lyrics and it turns into the big number Freiheit für Nottingsham (Freedom for Nottingham). In my opinion is deserves a much bigger audience!

In case someone is wondering how the music sounds (in german):

Here is a short medley TV performance in costume https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvJjgpohUXk

and here is a streaming concert with the cast and Chris the Burgh singing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIQYzyv3erA

Advice Needed Musical Audition Cut Advice!

Hi all,

I'm going for my first Broadway open call (“Wicked”), and I could use some help. The listing says, "16 bars" a cappella for your selected song. I've read and heard that this is not meant literally; that it is loosely interpreted as 30-45 seconds. This would be a radically different result for me, with the song I've chosen ("She Used To Be Mine" - The Waitress). This would mean going from singing just 2 lines to a whole section, and would allow me to show emotional arc and vocal build and range.

I'm unsure how to handle this. I know I only get one shot, so I want to make it my strongest effort. But I also don't want to be deliberately trying to sidestep guidelines that may irritate someone.

I vacillate between feeling I should be confident with my strong vocal experience and success, and my intense feeling of doubt over the fact I haven't done theater in years, because I've been busy making a living as a musician. My imposter syndrome from years ago is rearing its ugly head and reminding me why I never went to another open call after the one and only I attended out of college. But I'm so much different than that person and I have something to prove to myself, if no one else.

That sounds so *deep* and *extra* alongside such a basic question about "16 bars" 😂. But this is an emotional experience for me. I'm accomplished. I have the chops. I have the expression. But I knew back in my 20s I wasn't cutthroat enough to make it. So I didn't. Now, at this point in my life and career not as much rides on that dream. I'm successful, I'm secure. But I still feel the need to prove something to myself. And if I only go in for the second and final open call of my life, I want to make it the best damn minute I can. I just need to know how much of that minute I can use.

Hadestown Proshot

Lowkey hate that the US gets access to media months before Australia 😒

I just saw the proshot last night for the Australian premiere, and I couldn't find another post talking about it, so.

If you've seen it, can we talk about how GOOD it is? Oh my gods! The close ups, Persephone's emoting, the way everyone went So. Much. Harder. for the cameras than would be healthy for a normal show run. Even Patrick's foot support boot and cane looked like they were always meant to be part of his costume.

I fell in love with the show all over again, nonstop tears for all of Act 2.

What did you all think?

Audition Male audition material for Into the Woods

So this year my high school is doing into the woods for the musical and I need some good male songs to sing for auditions.

Two (2) musical theater songs of your choosing for auditions
■ Songs should be 16 - 32 bars (or approximately 30 seconds each)
■ You will need to have a backing track (no vocals) for both songs.
■ Acapella auditions (without music) are not permitted.
○
Prepare a monologue that is 15 - 30 seconds long.
○
Your audition songs / monologue should not be from Into the Woods
(This is the pasted out requirement for the auditions)

My preference is any songs that you think embody the Baker and Jack. Also any monologue that can reflect both characters. Any help would be loved thank you.

Discussion What’s the biggest difference (Positive or Negative) between acts you’ve seen in a show?

I was thinking about Spamalot today and how act one feels like a nonstop freight train of perfect Monty Python comedy, then act two gets bogged down with side plots (they work in the movie, for me they don’t work on stage) and loses a lot of the steam as they go towards a conclusion that feels written just to wrap things up. It’s still a very funny show I just feel like act one is miles above act two.

My other example is the notebook. I’ve seen it once at closing night on Broadway and act one didn’t draw me in, but the act one finale through the finale of the show grabbed me and didn’t let go (other than a technical pause) and floored me.

I’d love to hear yalls thoughts!
