Yarus & ETBs

• Upvotes

Question regarding the stack with [[Yarus, Roar of the Old Gods]]. If I had a [[Garruk's Uprising]] on the battlefield and triggered Yarus' ability on a morphed 4 power creature, (for example an [[Ashcloud Phoenix]] ), would Garruk's Uprising trigger? Yarus' ability makes the creature return to the battlefield face-down, then flips it face-up. It would technically enter as a 2/2, but during the resolution of the ability go to being a 4/1. Triggers aren't put on the stack until state based actions can be checked after the resolution of Yarus, so would it see the 2/2 or the 4/1?

I tend to think it wouldn't, but would be rad if it did.

Mirror Entity and Nephilim Epochal

• Upvotes

As title suggests, Player A has [[Mirror Entity]] and [[Nephilim Epochal]] on the battlefield with a bunch of non-nephilims who have stuff like "knights are indestructible" "Slivers are hexproof", stuff like that. He then activates ME's ability for 0 to make everything a Nephilim.

My question is, they become Nephilim so they are affected by the Epochal's passive but since they are 0/0 don't they just die before the +x/+x goes into affect from Ephochal? Reason I am asking is that he has used this combo a couple times to avoid board wipes or targeted abilities since well. It's free.

How Does Arabella's ability work with Strionic Resonator?

If I were to copy Arabella's ability and give it to a token, does that token's new ability get triggered whenever Arabella attacks? If I had Delney on the battlefield, would the ability will be triggered 4 times (twice from Arabella and twice from the token)?

Arabella's ability states, "Whenever Arabella, Abandoned Doll attacks, it deals X damage to each opponent and you gain X life, where X is the number of creatures you control with power 2 or less"

Strionic Resonator's mana ability states, "Copy target triggered ability you control. You may choose new targets for the copy. (A triggered ability uses the words "when," "whenever," or "at.")"

For context, I was given a bracket 1-2 Arabella deck as my introduction to MTG a few months back. I lost pretty badly one night, so now I'm curious how far Arabella can go as commander. Been upgrading the deck ever since. I'm still learning about the game, so any advice is appreciated!

Another Dack question with Oblivion Ring like effects

I have a [[Dack Fayden Helping Hand]] deck and run [[Angel of Sanctions]].

A question i have is, am I able to target the Angel with its own ability after resolving Dack's trigger? And if so, what happens?

My understanding is:

  1. Cast Dack, he ETB's and his trigger goes on the stack and must resolve completely

  2. I reveal cards until I reveal X creatures, one of them is an Angel of Sanctions

  3. The Angel and the two other creatures are given to my opponents as Dack's trigger resolves and then any ETB's go on the stack

  4. I target the Angel with its own trigger to exile it as its now a permanent my opponent controls.

Does the Angel go to exile then returns under my control?

Or does nothing happen and the Angel stays under my opponents control?

Typal switching and targeting

Let's say I control [[unnatural selection]] and [[coalition honor guard]].

My opponent casts a targeted spell. Can I respond to that spell by paying mana into unnatural selection and forcing them to target their own creature?

Thanks in advance.

Thalakos Seer vs Ninjutsu

If I can't target anything with Beorn the Fierce because my creatures have Shroud, but I still control 3 bears. Do I still draw the 2 cards?

Just as I wrote in the title. Wondering if the trample counter needs to be done for the rest of the ability to resolve.

Nethroi Apex and Loot Anamoly

I'm not sure but If I use Nethroi to bring back loot, since hes -2 power does that mean it adds 2 to the to total I can bring back bringing it to power 12 or less? Or does it stay 10 and loot is basically free?

Eldritch evolution plus clones

I control a Clone that's a copy of grizzly bear.

If i cast eldritch evolution sacrificing this clone, is the value of X calculated from the cmc of the card (ie X=6) or from the cmc of the permanent on the battlefield (ie X=4) ?

I have the same question if i sacrifice a shifted woodland that copied a grizzly bear (but I guess it should be the same answer as the previous situation anyway).

Do I need to keep track of which players I get Varchild's survivor tokens from?

In EDH, if I hit PlayerA for 10 with [[Varchild, Betrayer of Kjeldor]], then Varchild dies (gaining control of all survivors), then PlayerA dies on a future turn, do the 10 tokens I gathered from that player leave the game? I assume that since that player created the token they are owned by that player.

Example 4 of 800.4a seems to state that they do:

Example: Alex controls [[Genesis Chamber]], which reads, “Whenever a nontoken creature enters, if Genesis Chamber is untapped, that creature’s controller creates a 1/1 colorless Myr artifact creature token.” If Alex leaves the game, all such Myr tokens that entered the battlefield under Alex’s control leave the game, and all such Myr tokens that entered the battlefield under any other player’s control remain in the game.

I assume that I'll need to keep (up to) three seperate piles of survivor tokens, so I can correctly remove the correct number from the game once a specific player is removed.

Activated ability reductions

If I have [[Zirda, the Dawnmaker]] and [[Mutagen Man, Living Ooze]] will I be able to make stuff like my clues cost zero. As Zirda can’t reduce to zero but mutagen man can do I have to play them in a specific order for layer shenanigans?

Nexus of Fate and Discovery

Hey, I’m uncertain about the interaction of [[Nexus of Fate]] and [[Discovery // Dispersal]], despite existing discussions on this topic.

Let’s say I cast Discovery and the two cards I look at are Nexus of Fate and card B, and I decide to surveil Nexus into grave and leave card B on top. From what I’ve heard, these two events should happen simultaneously, but at the same time this isn’t possible (you either shuffle Nexus into library as given by the replacement effect, and then put card B on top and draw it, or you put card B on top, then shuffle Nexus, and then draw). Which of these scenarios happens and why?

Thanks

Yurlok mana ability + Overabundance

If I turn [[Yurlok of Scorch Thrash]] into a land with something like [[Ashaya, Soul of the Wild]], do cards like [[Overabundance]] work for Yurlok's 3 mana ability? I.e., does activating his printed ability count as tapping a land for mana even if I don't use the "forest" ability?

Does life gain work differently to other triggered abilities?

Hi friends, I’ve been trying to research this, but I’m just getting confused. When a card has a triggered ability like [[Social Climber]], unless it says “one or more”, I currently think it triggers for each individual one. In that case, imagine you play [[Hop to it]]. Do you gain 3 or one life?

Then, with [[Starscape Cleric]]. Does my opponent lose 1 life per life point I gain? Or just one per instance?

Would very much appreciate any help, thanks so much ! 🌸

Jacob Hauken, Inspector

{Jacob Hauken, Inspector} I feel like a fool, reading this card. I draw a card, exile a card from my hand, then I may look at that card for as long as it remains exiled? Can I play that exiled card? Or play them after I transform it into {Hauken's Insight}?

Sorry the wording of "You may look at that card for as long as it remains exiled" is just throwing me off

Teysa, Orzhov Scion

Hello, the Situation is: There is Teysa, Orzhov Scion + Darkest hour + Painters Servant (played after Darkest hour - saying colour white) + three other creatures on my board. The opponent has one creature on the board, which i want to exile with Teysas first ability.

The question is, can i do infinity ETB Triggers? I sacrifice my other three creatures targeting the opponents creature to exile. This ability should go onto the stack. Then Teysas second Ability triggers ( goes onto the stack) and i get again three creatures. When this resolves i want to do the sacrifing again and want to target again the same opponents creature (holding priority?)

Is this correct? :)

Can't Gain Life card against Lifelink when the attacked player is dying

I am attacking with several creatures with lifelink and there is a player with [[Sulfuric Vortex]] which prevents life gain. The player with SV is dying during the attack. I would assume because it's a replacement effect that it would still block them from gaining life even if the player dies but I am not sure. Could I get some explanation of how this interaction would work?

Are replacement effects abilities?

Context: [[Pir, imaginative rascal]], [[doubling season]] on field.
I cast a planeswalker, lets say [[garruk wildspeaker]]. I know i get to order the replacement effects of its loyalty counters as it enters so he would enter with 8 counters. but! when i activate his +1 ability, i know pir's replacement applies and i would add 2 counters. but does that count as an ability adding the counters so that doubling season gets to apply as well? does rule 614.6: "If an event is replaced, it never happens. A modified event occurs instead, which may in turn trigger abilities. Note that the modified event may contain instructions that can’t be carried out, in which case the impossible instruction is simply ignored." impact the situation?

Does The Great Goblin deal 2 damage if it was cast using Opal Palace?

[[Opal Palace]] lets [[The Great Goblin]] enter with a +1/+1 counter. The Great Goblin deals 2 damage to target opponent when a counter is put on a Goblin I control. Does it see the +1/+1 counter being put on itself?

Sower of Temptation - Dress down

Hi, quick question:

Let's say I have a Sower of Temptation on the field controlling an opponent's creature.

In a later turn Swords to Plowshards is cast on the Sower of Temptation.

In response Dress Down is cast.

What happens to the controlled creature after Swords to Plowshards resolves? Is it returned? If so, when exactly?

Copies, legend rule and death triggers

If I have a [[Myojin of Cryptic Dreams]] that copies [[Millicent, Restless Revenant]], do I get 3 spirits, or 12? I'm a little confused about the part that refers to himself. Would they see eachother in this case, or is it simply referring to "this card"?

Nils, Discipline Enforcer Question

If I have Nils, Discipline Enforcer on the battlefield and my opponent has Ob Nixilis, the Fallen with a bunch of counters he put on him from the beginning of the game. My question is can he attack me without paying the mana cost with Ob Nixilis, the Fallen (+12/+12) even though I didn't put those counters on. The way Nils, Discipline Enforcer reads it doesn't say it has to be my counters placed on a creature it just says counters. So he should need to pay 12 in order to attack me correct?

Thanks in advance!

Jade Monolith + Defending Create = Combat Damage?

What my question boils down to: Can a defending creature do combat damage to a player?

The process is as follows:

- I have [[Jade Monolith]] on the field

- I have [[Time Reaper]] on the field

- Opponent attacks with a creature of their choice that I am eligible to block

- I block using Time Reaper

- I activate Jade Monolith's ability at a corresponding time to have Time Reaper deal the damage it would normally do in retaliation to the attack player's creature, to me instead.

Question: Does this count as combat damage?
