The Other Side of City Pop — 30 Obscure Japanese Tracks, Private Pressings & Hidden Gems

Most City Pop playlists tend to feature the same familiar names and songs. But there's another side of Japanese music from the '70s and '80s that rarely gets talked about.

I've spent a lot of time digging into that lesser-known world, and I've put together a 30-track DJ mix featuring obscure Japanese recordings, including private pressings, tracks that never made it to CD, and some seriously overlooked gems.

The music moves freely between funk, disco, boogie, AOR, jazz, fusion, and soft rock. Some tracks might not even sound like what people typically call "City Pop" today. To me, that's part of the beauty of it.

Among the selections are private press releases by Yamamoto and The Bass Of Power.

One of my personal favorites is Yuji Dan's "Town & Country" (1983), a rare record whose song was used in a Japanese commercial for the surf brand Town & Country. Originally released in limited quantities, it has enjoyed something of a cult following among certain DJs over the years.

There are 30 tracks in total, mostly from the late '70s and '80s, with a full tracklist and timestamps on Mixcloud.
