Toronto has black squirrels

I came to ask, are they supposed to be a different color? I have only ever seen them be black or very dark. Lived in southern Ontario most of my life though.

The Black squirrels in Ontario and Western NY are just melanistic Eastern Grey Squirrels. First time I ever saw one was while visiting Niagara Falls on the American side. I occasionally see them further into NY, but they're mostly a regional thing. I think the melanistic genetics are just very dominant.

See, this is what's mildly interesting to me. You are one of multiple people in this thread who grew up seeing them.

Google "eastern gray squirrel". They're gray. Literally all the squirrels I'd seen my entire life were grayish/brownish until I moved here.

Ontario, and they released a bunch near Kent State years ago so a good chunk of eastern Ohio has them too.

I didn't see a black squirrel where I live until I was in high school. 99% of ours seem to be red.

Wait until you see/hear red squirrels!

We are in Washington state and have grey squirrels. Interesting enough when I go to Vancouver bc I see black squirrels

You're not crazy, OP! Well, not about this, anyway. I've only ever seen gray/brown squirrels too.

There are white squirrels in Exeter as well.

So I moved from the Southern US to more North in the past few years. Where I came from, I only ever saw brown squirrels. Moved here and I saw brown, black, and all tones in between. I thought it was just a unique place but I realized they’re just more prevalent up here.

Where i am squirrels are brown-gray. Like the first pics that come up if you search for a squirrel on google. I’ve never seen a black one before.

I found a blonde squirrel one time. Also Ontario.

Canada is actually the reason Washington DC has black squirrels

Haha really, I'm from DC thinking 'we have black squirrels '

Most squirrels in Ontario are black. It's the non black ones that are in the minority.

This is just...normal.

This was my immediate thought too. In London Ontario, they are basically all black here.

i was gonna ask bc like… i feel like literally every other squirrel here is pure black fur and i live in southern ontario. its crazy to me that this is not normal elsewhere? it’s so prevalent that they’re what i think of when someone says to think of a squirrel.

its a near-canada experience to see black squirrels. took a tour around niagara and the guide said the black squirrels are native canadians but can be found a few miles away from the border. saw them 90 miles away from the border in my uni town. i miss the black squirrels

I live in Western NY and never saw one until I moved to Niagara county. They're everywhere here.

I heard they are also in Central Park or something

It makes me wonder if there's some sort of conditions that make it more likely to happen. Also whether it's a dominant trait once it appears

3

u/Lepke2011 9h ago

Yeah. I live in NYC, and I see them on occasion. They're just the standard Eastern Gray Squirrel with a genetic mutation that gives them more melanin.

1

u/lveg 9h ago

This brings me back to wondering why the mutation only occasionally pops up and isn't a normal variation.

Because of our influence, we isolate certain populations. If the gene is existing in a population with higher density to the recessive trait, that will certainly make it pop up more frequent

I saw an article that pointed at Omaha as having more and more black squirrels. One of the biologists they talked to speculated that if natural selection is in play it may be because the darker color keeps them warmer during winter time.

Black squirrels were all over the Bronx. Went to school up there. The moment you crossed into bx, black squirrels were the default

The squirrels in my backyard have had three litters this summer. From that I have pure black, red and black all black with a red tail and one that's kind of a brindle color.

More common in northern populations across Ontario and the upper Midwest where temps are cold. Squirrels flatten out on branches to sun themselves to keep warm in winter. Being black helps

u/markybar 9h ago

First and only time I saw them. My mind was blown

1

u/EvisceratedSpinster 8h ago

That tripped me out when I moved there for a few years as a teen. Back in America now and half the time people don't believe me when I say Canada has black squirrels.

1

u/FrazzledTurtle 6h ago

So does Niagara Falls. ... but just south of the Canadian border where I live, we have NO black squirrels.

Vancouver too

There's white ones north of London
