Duracell battery packaging in EU features a pink rabbit without sunglasses

Is this uncommon? what is the US bunny like?

The energizer bunny was originally created to parody the Duracell rabbit, but it became so popular in America that nobody even remembers what it was parodying and Duracell dropped the bunny mascot.

u/Oracle_of_Ages 8h ago
The original commercial.
108
u/Vailx 7h ago
That's the parody one by Energizer as soon as Duracell let their trademark expire.
Here's the original commercial.
89
u/justaboxinacage 7h ago
Duracell never attempted to trademark the bunnies until after energizer parodied it and made the pink bunny popular. The pink bunnies just represented any toy the way Duracell used them. It was Energizer's parody that made it an icon and Duracell tried to take advantage of Energizer's popular ad campaign. They settled with Energizer keeping rights in North America and Duracell getting pink bunny rights everywhere else.
17
u/Oracle_of_Ages 7h ago
That’s on me. I could have been more clear. I did mean that was the birth of the Energizer Bunny as we know it.
6
u/anteaterKnives 5h ago edited 5h ago
Interesting that the Duracell commercial says they last longer than "regular carbon batteries".
By the time the Energizer Bunny was created, alkaline batteries (including Duracell and Energizer) had completely replaced "regular carbon batteries".
Edit to add: I have no recollection of ever using anything other than alkaline batteries, going back to around when that Energizer commercial came out, but Wikipedia claims 20% of all portable batteries used in the UK were zinc-carbon in 2011 (and says nothing about US battery usage).
2
u/FuckIPLaw 59m ago
If you buy something that comes with pre-installed AAs or AAAS there's a good chance it'll be zinc-carbon even now. Especially in remote controls. That's about the only place you're likely to find them without going out of your way, though.
36
u/zestycunt 7h ago
Grant Imahara (commonly known from mythbusters) also pioneered the mechanical version of the energizer bunny we all came to love.
Rest in peace to an absolute legend.
7
u/Shouldabeenswallowed 7h ago
Didn't know he passed. RIP to the best part of myth busters.
5
u/pinkocatgirl 6h ago
So hard to choose who was the best on that show IMO… it really was like lightning in a bottle. The best people came together at the best time to make one of the best TV shows ever
5
u/Wolf-Majestic 7h ago
Oh yes ! We had that comercial as well ! I was just too young to have seen the original this one parodizes lol
4
u/notquite20characters 5h ago
I like 'No battery Lasts Longer'.
But that doesn't mean Energizer lasts longer than Duracell. They are (were) basically the same. So you won't be able to disprove the null hypothesis of 'all other batteries have a less than or equal lifespan'.
And Energizer has a cooler rabbit, so buy Energizer.

Isn't this also kind of the story behind Bugs Bunny and the whole carrot thing?
What is it with rabbit mascots?
1
u/justaboxinacage 7h ago
What do you mean with bugs bunny?
11
u/anotherjunkie 7h ago
It was a loose parody of Clark Gable — specifically from his performance in It Happened One Night.
11
u/Dry_Way5518 7h ago
Correct. The carrot was a kid friendly stand-in for a cigar, and consequently became associated with rabbits.
5
9
u/seabutcher 7h ago
So far as I heard, the entire stereotype about rabbits being especially fond of carrots came about because Bugs Bunny ate a carrot for a bit, which I think was actually imitating a famous TV personality at the time who has since faded into relative obscurity.
→ More replies (1)8
u/stirwise 5h ago
Bugs Bunny was snacking on that carrot as a nod to Clark Gable in the classic film It Happened One Night. Hardly some forgotten TV personality. Also: TV didn’t exist when Bugs was created.
-1
u/StitchinThroughTime 7h ago
You dont know Bugs! He just had a movie a few years ago. He is Mickey Mouse old.
3
u/justaboxinacage 7h ago
No I'm asking how it's similar to the energizer bunny parody with a carrot thing
3
u/lazergoblin 4h ago
Maybe I'm a bit biased but the Energizer bunny was definitely an improvement on the design. Everyone knows sunglasses instantly give you +10 charisma
2
u/justaboxinacage 3h ago
Hell yeah that was the idea. They were like "these dweebs and their lame ass bunnies. Look at our cool ass rabbit"

u/BioFrosted 8h ago

34
u/chth 8h ago
The concept of being the best battery company.
I haven’t looked into the data but anecdotally I’ve seen Duracell be the default for enterprise use while energizer has more retail shelf space
13
u/Chittick 7h ago
For enterprise work I've seen Procell mainly, which is part of Duracell.
I will say with confidence that Duracell is now near the bottom tier for quality. I've had numerous brand new Duracell batteries fail in low draw devices within weeks of installing them, and I've never had a single Energizer battery fail me.
Browse the battery related subreddits and you'll find a common dislike of Duracell.
8
6
u/Jaalan 7h ago
I will say that procell batteries feel more weighty than their consumer counterparts.
6
u/Chittick 7h ago
I believe I've had one Procell failure in all the batteries I've used.
They're definitely higher quality than regular Duracell.
6
u/Impossible_Leg_2787 7h ago
They’re not bottom tier, there’s some real shit batteries out there. They’ve just been coasting on name recognition for too long and don’t care about QC anymore, and they’re overpriced for the hit-and-miss when you can get a pack of energizers for 2/3rds the cost and they’ll be extremely consistent.
3
u/Chittick 7h ago
You're right that there are worse, absolutely.
I don't think Duracell are any cheaper than Energizer where I live though, so it's interesting to hear that.
Personally I just use the IKEA rechargeable batteries now and after years of use they haven't let me down.
6
u/Impossible_Leg_2787 7h ago
IKEA batteries are factory second Panasonics, absolutely a fantastic choice. Probably better than either energizer or Duracell tbh.
5
u/Ascend 7h ago
Unless you need coin cell batteries, then you avoid Duracell like the plague because the bitter coating applied causes the batteries to severely underperform in devices. In IoT devices especially, you have to attempt to remove the coating just for devices to get enough voltage consistently.

u/WntrTmpst 7h ago
There isn’t a USA one. The ads have anthro batteries with faces but nothing unique like the energizer bunny
7
3
u/DrAction696 8h ago
That’s what he looks like on Energizer stadium. Home of the STL City soccer team. Currently on a 19 game win streak
11
u/dullestfranchise 8h ago
Which is a rip-off of the Duracell bunny
7
u/Vailx 8h ago
Duracell let the pink bunny trademark expire. Energizer came at them immediately and took it.
2
u/JustHere4the5 7h ago
It’s probably a good thing Duracell did that. Their bunny looks like it’s just done a bump and wants you to do one too.

The Duracell bunny exists everywhere except Turkey, the US, and Canada.

u/reddfawks 8h ago
Fun fact, this bunny was there before the Energizer one.
It was Jay Chiat that created the pink Energizer bunny to spoof the Duracell one. Same guy that made the Apple 1984 commercial.
189
u/tdfast 8h ago
In North America, Duracell let the bunny mascot patent lapse, so Energizer jumped on it and now they use it. I was surprised when I saw the bunny on Duracell elsewhere.
1
u/QuickTemperature7014 7h ago
Patent?
33
u/tdfast 7h ago
I guess it would be the copyright.
15
u/justaboxinacage 6h ago
Also it's not correct. Duracell didn't attempt to trademark the bunny until after Energizer parodied it
26
u/QuickTemperature7014 7h ago
Trademark.
24
u/watduhdamhell 7h ago
"Patent?"
Life pro tip: If it is not and you know that to be the case, reply to the first comment with that information, not some annoying passive aggressive correction made to look like a question.

Never seen the Energizer bunny so it’s probably not everywhere.
7
u/Derpogama 7h ago
To be fair Energizer just aren't the 'everywhere' brand they seem to be in the states, here in the UK that's Duracell are the 'can get them in any corner shop or petrol station'.
6
u/Ast3r10n 7h ago
I can speak for my country alone, where Energizer is generally considered meh.
2
u/ihopethisworksfornow 6h ago
Energizer is considered meh here in the states too tbh.
Duracell makes good batteries but the good ones are pricy.
7
2
u/omnichad 7h ago
The Energizer Bunny was a response to the Duracell Bunny. Duracell let their US trademark lapse, so Energizer trademarked their own parody bunny. I don't think Energizer can use the bunny anywhere but the US and Canada because of Duracell trademarks.

This is exactly the kind of shit they'd show in a time travel film to let you know you fucked things up. It's freaking me out.
1
u/theRedlightt 2h ago
Or if you are in a time travel film maybe you should be familiar with history and that the Duracell bunny was there before Energizer
29
u/TheoremaEgregium 8h ago
In German, calling someone a Duracell bunny is a well-known slang term.
16
u/boersc 8h ago
It's a compliment... (keeps going and going and going...)

u/TheoremaEgregium 7h ago
I've heard it as a mild insult for a person who keeps going and going ... in an annoying way.

I actually worked for Duracell the pink bunny is originally Duracells mascot. It pre dates energizers use. There was something about a trademark issue and Energizer got to keep the logo in the US but every where else except Turkey; it is a pink bunny. The common rumor was in Turkey they view bunnies as bad omens. So it is a bear with the same face as the bunny. They were all over the office where I worked.

I bought these several weeks ago and planned to post it here because I thought it was odd that the pink rabbit didn't have it's normal sunglasses I see in the US. The package has been floating around the house since then, but it wasn't until I was making this post 5 minutes ago that I realized that the pink-rabbit-with-sunglasses mascot in the US belongs to Duracell's main competitor, Energizer.
129
u/The_Gene_Genie 8h ago
Duracell had the rabbit first, copyright lapsed in the US and it was taken by energiser. Energiser is the knock-off (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duracell_Bunny)
44
23
24
u/antwanlb 8h ago
To be fair, duracell never planned to reuse it, and energizer's first campaign was a direct parody of duracell's. Seems like fair play to me
→ More replies (7)11
u/hugothebear 8h ago
The energizer rabbit was to mock Duracell, saying that their batteries last longer, so the drumming bunny keeps going, and going, and going…
So Duracell stopped using the rabbit and energizer kept it

To make it slightly more interesting, the mascot in Türkiye is a bear. As far as I know and a quick google search says, "Duramaz" is the local version of the bunny and exists only in Türkiye.
Also seen in this post on this sub from a while ago

They tried to make a movie like this called Food Fight. It was the worst movie ever made and the only mascots they got the rights to use were Mr. Clean, Charlie Tuna, and I think the Brawny guy

There is a film called logorama that features 2500 corporate logos and mascots. Ronald mcdonald, mr clean, pringles guy were just a few to mention. Can't remember if it was good or not. I feel like it was.

Curious how the younger users here think of the Energizer Bunny. The original gimmick was that a completely real-looking ad for a fictional product would start, and halfway through the bunny would come in and the announcer would say “Still going!”, revealing it was actually another Energizer ad.
Before anywhere online to repost or discuss the ads, this came as a total surprise unless you’d seen that particular fake ad before. It was a great campaign.
3
u/No-Willingness-4097 5h ago
Duracell bunny was first, appeared in the 70s. When the trademark ran out in 88 energizer invented their bunny to troll them. The first ad energizer released was the duracell bunnies playing the drums nad, but with the energizer bunny storming on at the end still "full of energy" beating a huge drum.

This caught me off guard the first time I traveled to Peru and saw these in a convenience store. Apparently he is able to be used everywhere except for the US and Canada.

This became mildly interesting for a different reason than the title. Energizer parodied the Duracell Bunny and then trademarked their own pink bunny with sunglasses in USA and Canada

u/RllyGayPrayingMantis 8h ago edited 8h ago
Duracell bunny came first, but at one point they forgot to renew the expiring trademark, so Energizer basically played a prank, as they snuck in and filed the trademark for another pink bunny mascot, right before Duracell can renew the existing trademark. So now Energizer got the right to use pink bunny in the US/Canada instead, while the original Duracell bunny is basically everywhere else.

u/Grand-Spring66 8h ago
This is not true. In Europe, Duracell owns the rights to the Energizer bunny.

This is essentially the same rabbit Energizer made fun of in the earliest Energizer Bunny commercials in the U.S. The Energizer Bunny in the U.S. has sunglasses.
Duracell commercials had always compared their alkaline batteries to carbon batteries. Energizer ridiculed how that was an apples to oranges comparison, and dared them to compare their product to other alkaline batteries. It was a successful campaign.

I, in the UK, spent far too long looking at this picture wondering what the problem was.
