Bathroom tap that changes colour as the water warms up

u/ithink2mush 1d ago
Why is the middle color green? It should be purple, right? Blue = cold, red = hot, therefore purple= warm.

That's just the common gradient?
Blue : too low
Green : good
Red : too high

u/pizzaguy132 1d ago
No. Its green = uncommon, blue = rare, and red = legendary

u/The_JSQuareD 1d ago
Nah. Green = uncommon, blue = rare, purple = epic, orange = legendary.

With a stop light, green means go and yellow means slow down. With a banana, however, it is quite the opposite. Green means hold on. Yellow means go ahead. And red means where the fuck did you get that banana at?

In design courses you learn that the typical color palette for cold to hot is:
Deep/Royal Blue -> Aqua -> Neutral/White -> Yellow/Orange -> Red
And that corresponds to:
Ice Cold -> Cool -> Room Temp -> Warm -> Hot
You probably have noticed this gradient before on water taps, shower mixers, or thermostats. Notably, shower mixers with red and blue lines won’t blend the colors, both will just be thicker at the extremes and taper towards where they meet in the middle to represent this palette, which is essentially two different gradients that meet in the middle at room temperature.

funnily enough the actual color pallet of black body radiation is Red -> Orange -> Yellow -> White -> pale blue.
Although we dont really get in contact with black body radiation beyond the orange colour in every day life except when looking at stars

It's water, too hot for one person is too cold for another.
4
u/SEA_griffondeur 21h ago
Yeah but it's still important for calibration to know where it's half cold water half hot water

I suspect it’s for color legibility. It’s easier to tell the difference between green and blue versus purple and blue. It’s not as intuitive, but whoever has this faucet will learn pretty quickly what green means and then it’s easier to tell at a glance.

Would it not actually be worse for color legibility to include green and red, the two colors affected in the most common form of colorblindness?

I suspect it's because the LED is a RGB LED. So red green blue. Don't look much further into it. And yes you could combine two colors to make purple, that would make the electric circuit more complicated.

Probably this design is just more readable and and also I rarely see violet LEDs in general so stocking them might not be common.

u/Protection-Working 1d ago
Can’t you just shine the red and blue leds at the same time?

u/073068075 1d ago
Sure but that might require some logic gate or other electronics magic.

u/RyanSmokinBluntz420 11h ago
you're getting downvoted by dummies. Yes blending two colors is a more difficult circuit to construct VS. just a red green or blue

You are right. This makes no sense. It should be purple and as the water is warming up the colors should shift in front of your eyes. This seems like it just abruptly changes color when it hits the right temp.

Thank you. Came here to say that.
But the bigger question is: Who thought is was a good idea to put an electrical anything near water that you use to wash your hands with.

i can hear when water goes from cold to hot
the colour is big enough to see but
9
u/woutomatic 1d ago
You can absolutely hear that. Same as when you pour hot water instead of cold.

Had a shower head that did that. It was nice because I could tell when the water was tolerable for me if I showered with my wife, who usually has only hot water going.

What is it with women and scalding showers? I like the water just warm enough to be comfortable, it's much better for my skin. Sometimes I'll crank it up a bit if I'm sore, but it seems like every woman I've dated has needed it just below 1st degree burns lol

I have one of these it's self powered by by a mini water wheel inside, the only thing is wrong with it is the cold doesn't show blue no more or my tap won't get super cold no more.

The state of American education is abysmal and I care about it. Just answering your question.

u/RyanSmokinBluntz420 11h ago
Why do they have to be from America? There are dumbasses everywhere. America bad

I have also discovered that they don't last forever. Mine lasted about 4 years.

Does it gradually sweep through blue, cyan, green, yellow, red.
Or are the changed between the colors abrupt?

I just listen to my faucet. Hot water sounds different. But I see that this is useful for deaf people.

I have a kitchen faucet with this feature. It worked correctly for a little less than a month. Now it randomly flashes different colors for no apparent reason, regardless of the water temp.

u/SayyadinaAtreides 1d ago
I'm a bit embarrassed how much this would help me lmao. I constantly forget which direction a handle should go for hot/cold water, stick my hand in to see if I can judge whether it's getting warmer or colder, fail to judge that either, then give up and accept room-ish temperature water while feeling like an utter moron.

u/turkeyvulturebreast 1d ago
I had one of these years ago. I had it on my kitchen sink. I think I got it from thinkgeek.com.

I have a concern about needing to wire up an electrical circuit to a water faucet. If the housing to the light leaks, are you then going to get electrocuted?
Even if it’s only 12v, that’s 12v that could still potentially go through your body as you wash your hands. And if the line shorts… And if it connected to the house mains…
1
u/crono333 13h ago
I think these are usually powered by the water pressure itself and don’t need to be wired up to anything.

u/redclawx 12h ago
Wait, so there a little impeller that get turned by the running water? An impeller that would slow down the flow of water, like an inhibitor in a shower? An impeller that has moving parts, that can break down over time, or corrode with hard water?

u/RyanSmokinBluntz420 11h ago
LEDs are usually 3vdc. You're not going to get shocked. If you're worried about this, never travel to south america. They have shower heads with a heating element inside. The houses dont have hot water heaters. Instead they have a coil of wire inside the shower head, and its hooked up to 240vac. The water runs right over the wire. You might feel a little tingle but its not much. I wouldnt suggest doing it but there are millions of people who take a shower everyday (hopefully) with this widow maker shower head.
