Why would ai be allowed on any assignment unless it’s a study on ai in some capacity? “Hey kids! You can outsource your work to the plagiarism and lies machine and not learn shit!”

Because if you don't say it, someone will say it wasn't explicitly mentioned not to use it.

as a high school teacher, I just had a student say this exact thing a couple days ago.

And you told them that life isn't a game of playing rules against the rule-makers and didn't let them pretend not to know better, right?

When the rule makers are corrupt you can't win even when you are right so there's no point in trying.

honeslty i'm surpised on day one they arn't just told at this point, "ai is always cheating, unless specificly permitted for an assignment"

I mean, you just answered your own question. There are some assignments that will allow or require you to use or interact with AI in some capacity. If you make it clear this isn’t one of them then a student can’t come up with a dumb excuse either.

Because AI can be a great tool to help with stuff.

I mean, it could be an assignment about learning how to use ai. Or even learning its limitations. Could be interesting to try to bait it into saying something incorrect and then using external sources to prove its incorrect to learn not to blindly trust it.

Why would teachers make us calculate without calculators when we will have calculators in our pockets for the rest of our lives?

Because the point is learning, not to learn how to use a calculator. Plug in an equation in a high end scientific calculator and it’ll solve x y z for you. That’s not learning it.

Only by learning how to solve the simple equations by hand can you go and solve more difficult problems by calculator or coding
