Pretty much. If a student is willing to contact me it shows that at least they care, even a little, and I am happy to work with them. I tell my students: contact me. If you contact me, at least I know what's going on. No contact, I assume you are lazy or don't care.
Usually, it's not the students who contact me that I have to worry about.
Every syllabus I've ever received has said pretty much the same thing verbatim, and it's the truth. I was never refused a late submission or a deadline extension. In part I'm sure because I was a 4.0 student otherwise, but in my experience the vast majority of instructors couldn't possibly care less about granting an extension as long as you asked a few days in advance and were polite about it. Only works once or twice a semester, but most people aren't submitting late assignments more than once or twice a semester so it's fine.
Hell, even the few times I missed the deadline for assignments (always due to procrastinating until the last minute with every assignment, as is tradition), a simple email sent promptly apologizing for the late submission with the assignment attached (or begging for a quiz/test to be reopened for the day) was always accepted.
Exactly. Who wants to bust someone's balls over being 5 minutes late? Next day, maybe some points docked, but hell, at least you submitted it!
I really need to stress this here in Japan (teaching English), that it doesn't matter HOW you contact me, just contact me. English, Japanese, semaphore . . . some kinds don't want to write in English. No problem. Just contact me!
