Unskippable ad The most blatantly obvious Amazon Prime ad I’ve ever seen right in the middle of my show

my head cannon is that Subway and Honda didn't even pay them for that--it was all done for the love of the game

Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia received cease and desists for their inclusion of some products earlier in their run (first five seasons). I dont remember what they were and I dont have 44 hours to re listen to the podcasts right now :(

They found out the hard way you absolutely do not mess with the corporate lawyers at Kitten Mittens

Well first of all, filibuster

They had a lot of Budweiser neon signs in their bar in Season 1, with Anheuser-Buschs permission. After the first episode aired, they got a call from Anheuser-Busch telling them to remove all their products from their show lol.

They had to digitally remove them. If you watch Season 1, you'll see a lot of signs that just say "BEER" on them in the background

But Charlie turns on the Coors sign every morning to let people know they got ice cold Coors at the bar?

I always assumed that's what it was. Did they actually get sponsored?

I always assumed the Subway one was just a joke with permission to use the company name. The Honda one was a well done call back, but it goes over the top to provide actual details and place merch that I hope they made some money out of it! Regardless, the phrasing was done so well that it felt like characters were actually brainwashed to buy into the sales pitch more than just product placement. IMO a job well done!

They were both sponsored. Subway returns in the season 5 finale too (with Jared!), it's just part of the business. It's like Dave & Busters in It's always Sunny. It's a Network thing, the show doesn't really get anything out of it other than the producers know they'll be good sports.

John Oliver mentioned during his Last Week Tonight segment about Subway, that he was in several Subway sponsored bits during his time on Community. Highly suggest watching the segment. Subway gets air time on a lot of shows, even having Korean dramas set in Subway restaurants.

The subway plot in community was hilarious. When he goes out for a fist bump and only Abed does and gives him an “Eat Fresh!”

Nah it’s just how Subway does things. Here they are again in Chuck (only clip of it I could find was from this video).

I don't think it even clicked to me that that was supposed to be a sponsorship my first time watching, I thought they were just doing a bit about a guy named subway trying to brainwash everyone lol. It seemed like a very community thing to do

Yeah they definitely paid but wanted control over the story, Dan Harmon just kept saying no until they let him do whatever he wanted. There’s a clip of him talking about this on a panel on YouTube.

I think they talk about it in the commentary track too.

yes they got sponsored. community was actually very expensive to produce and those sponsorships helped it keep going. they just managed to get away with making the stories hilarious because they wouldn't agree to notes from the sponsors.

they absolutely did. those are straight up commercials even if theyre funny

For the Subway episode I thought they were just making fun

But for the Honda Episode they had every piece of Honda merch under the sun including multiple vehicles and Community just didnt have that kinda budget

head cannons are always a mindless blast.

I assumed this too - it feels like a vague reference to Jared Fogle more than an ad.

If you watched the show when it was broadcast you were bombarded with commercials for each in the ad breaks. They were sponsors, but signed off on the treatment on the show. That’s why the marketing company was the villain, not Subway.

It's funny because they glazed Lays chips for no reason at all.
