It's not fair to poorer students.

Then just leave it at home

You shouldn't be able to pay for the privilege. All students should be treated the same. And reasonable privacy should be a personal right and expectation they have.

And reasonable privacy

No one is looking through their phone.

Not sure why this is getting downvoted. Trust me the people who work in schools have so much more to do than look through a phone.

I'm going to assume it's from people who are from older gens

I'm 29, and when I was in school they DID do this with our phones at the time. It got to the point that if we got our phones taken, we took out the battery before handing whomever the phone. Obviously, this was before smartphones.

Things are different now.

Well, I was talking about fully grown adults. But I imagine the schools will have assistance programs for low income students just like they do now

That's a really silly assumption

It’s not fair to any student.

If you can afford a $1,000 iphone for your kid, you can afford a $25 pouch. Even the cheapest smart phone is hundreds of dollars. My school used to have teachers just collect phones during class but stopped doing that bc liability of expensive phones which is why this program allows students to hang onto their own phones. If there’s any damage or the phone goes missing, it’s on the student and not the teacher. I do think there’s a place for financial assistance for families that actually need it, but I’m side eyeing anyone with an expensive phone who claims they can’t afford a pouch

This is like that fox news piece about how people on food stamps have ~gasp~ refrigerators! "How can you have expensive appliances if you can't afford food?"

2

u/MonsterkillWow Jul 16 '26

No. People can get phones through various programs. The issue is the ability to pay for basic privacy rights.

you're making up someone to be mad at Jesus fucking Christ lmao.

If you can afford a phone, you can afford a pouch.

this is such a bat shit insane take in 2026. phones are a dime a dozen nowadays. YOU do not dictate what someone can or cannot afford. brain dead take.

You’re right and I am usually better about that so thanks for calling it out. As a teacher I don’t personally agree with taking kids phones I prefer to teach them how to regulate phone use in class than take it away. If we are teaching them for the future, they won’t have phones taken at meetings or movies, etc.

You can find motorola phones for $40. A cell phone is basically a necessity now, so having a phone doesn't mean you have $25 to spend on a piece of cloth with a magnet in it.
