Yeah the pay to play thing is incredibly classist. A lot of parents can't afford the basic supply list, now you're requiring a fee to bring a phone, and clear backpacks? I don't think kids really need their phones in school at all, especially since we did just fine without hen for decades before, but implementing fee is just enforcing the idea that you need money to ensure equal access, and that's capitalistic garbage thinking,

I work in a school in a low income area and any time we have to require students to buy something like a clear backpack, there are always waivers and letters going home within the first week of school so that students who can't afford it have free options. I would be willing to bet this school has the same alternatives.

Opt-out is still problematic because what if your crackhead dead doesn't read anything the school sends home or the mother was brought up to be too proud to request assistance.

Less friction if it's just free for everyone. (Like it would be with school lunches.)

I agree that things would be much better if they were free for everyone. There's no perfect solution, and oftentimes these decisions get made at the district level by people who haven't been in a classroom in years, if they ever worked in one at all, and school admin/teachers just have to try and make it work.

Ok but these are children. Their brains aren't developed enough to understand long term consequences. We have to help them with that.

I'm sick and tired of adults looking at literal children and acting like they're just petulant, smaller adults. Get a fucking grip.

Fucking idiotic comment. Do you think ā€œland of the freeā€ has any meaning in this context? Children’s full constitutional rights aren’t even vested until they’re 18. Schools have authority to enact and enforce reasonable policies. And they also have a duty to educate— and funding often depends on test scores. Kids don’t just have a free pass to use their phones just because they want. But guess what— you are legally required to go to school.

All of you idiots are so cooked.
