Are you lower middle class if you can only afford to rent? Own a townhouse?

I understand that areas with different cost of living will make that change, I suppose that $300k in The Bay Area might be middle class, but that is the exception, not the rule.

IDK, I have what I consider a nice house, my wife drives a nice car, (I like my beater.) We don't worry about grocery prices, invest, eat out, take occasional vacations and we don't make half of what they say I need to have to be middle class. That said, the kids are out of the house.

I would even think we are more than just middle class.

It is said you should buy a house that is 3x to 5x your income. If middle class is making $350k, are you not middle class if you don't have a million dollar house?

Are these just rage bait articles as the vast majority of people aren't making that?

When I see these articles on Reddit, I see a lot of upset people.
