My boss and exec have decided to finish up my probation 2 months early, so I’m permanent after 4 months!
I love my workplace, and I’ve never felt this positive about a job before.

I love that for you - everyone deserves a decent workplace but to have one that you love is special. I hope I can find my forever work sometime soon... really need to get out of this place next year.
•
u/chonky__chonker 7h ago
Unfortunately my job that I live so much has an end date because it’s a project, so I’ll be sure to live it as hard as I can before I’m out in the Wild West again in 2031!

Went to Tame Impala with my husband last night, he's a big fan and I went because yeah why not! It was brilliant, I knew more songs than I expected to, but my favourite part was occasionally looking up at my husband and seeing the totally in the moment look of joy on his face :)
•
u/Jaybb3rw0cky Deltron from Point Cook 4h ago
I love that you took the moment to watch your husband in his element. That's really cool. Glad you guys had a lot of fun. Would have been an awesome gig.

The sheer amount of minor crap I've had to deal with this morning is exhausting.
I took 1.5 days off and somehow that caused several people to stop functioning.
Had 5 requests for things I don't deal with.
Took an hour for someone to admit they made a typo, which caused a lengthy hunt around for correct information.
Putting myself on DND for the afternoon.

I had someone reach out this morning and go "Hey you know how you said my new laptop won't be here until next week? Can I have it today?". It is in fact NOT next week yet.
•
u/MeanElevator Text inserted! 7h ago
The audacious entitlement!!!
Perhaps tell them it's been delayed and now won't be available until sometime in February.
•
u/TinyBreak Salty in the South East 7h ago
the way the orders are coming in, feb legit may be too soon. We waited 3 months earlier in the year for some new MacBooks.
•

As long as it's out of your hands, milk it for all it's worth.
Surely others would take precedent over the impetuous.

Enterprise laptops are cooked at the moment lol, I'm trying to push for next FY's laptops to be put in this side of Christmas if possible
•
u/CrazyEeveeLady86 5h ago
What sort of MacBooks? I picked up a Neo earlier in the year not long before the price hike was announced. I was able to get mine really quickly but a colleague who wanted to order a few a couple of months later for a research project had to wait ages for them to come in.

Last night, across from Flinders Street Station where Elizabeth Street terminates, the road that goes north was being worked on: several witches hats & a DETOUR sign told drivers you can’t go down this road.
But some bold senior chap apparently didn’t let the rules dictate where he can/cannot drive, and went down Elizabeth Street anyway (obliviously driving in between the witches hats)…to the amusement/horror of multiple onlookers.
Seriously, how do some people have their driver’s license?
•

Oldies on the roads are as much of a hazard and angry tradies.

Seriously, how do some people have their driver’s license?
I only found out recently, to my amazement, that for my dad's driving test, the bloke had him simply back into a parking space and was like "righto, that'll do, that's a pass"
Thankfully my dad is a fantastic driver, but god damn the 70s must've been a helluva time to be alive.
•
u/Prime_factor 9h ago
It happens in the UK too. Drivers get too impatient to detour and drive in the construction site.

My VO2 max finally crossed the barrier into "good" which supposedly puts me into the top 40% of dudes in my age even though I don't know if I feel it lol
•
u/melbslove26 8h ago
Nice one!! I feel personally attacked every time my watch shows a giant "FAIR" for my VO2 max and tells me my recovery time will be ~36 hours. Rude lol.
•
u/Nova_Terra West Side 8h ago
I feel like my watch seems to compare me to an unrealistic standard, like come on there's no way i'm going to run a 28min 5k unless it was all downhill. It's cute it thinks I can but I know there isn't any way unless I knew there was a Heytea at the finish line 🫠

Really unsure what to do today, had a driving lesson cancelled last minute. I wanted to visit Rippon Lea estate for tour but it was sold out, considering doing a Marvel/MCG tour or just checking out the architecture of the university of Melbourne or supreme court library... any recommendations?
Also considering just staying in my suburb and taking a lapidary/pottery class

$100m powerball tonight, that would be nice wouldn't it.
•
u/Nova_Terra West Side 6h ago
I used to have a rule I wouldn't buy in unless it was over 100m, but that was last year and I think i'm indexing it for inflation. I reckon nobody wins div1 and it goes to 120 next week (if that's how it works?)
•
u/Jaybb3rw0cky Deltron from Point Cook 5h ago
I was the same though my limit was $30m and then it went up to $100m. I bought a ticket, although I entered a syndicate. I don't mind sharing my winnings if it's anywhere near the top division.
Does mean that more people are buying tickets, more people have a chance of winning, and the prize pool gets diluted. So there is that. But whatever. It's nice to dream about what the kind of wealth you can retire young on would mean for the family, huh.
•
u/Nova_Terra West Side 5h ago
I think my limit is so high because similarly when I say I buy a ticket it's.. a bit more than just 1 ticket it's the powerhit one I think it's called. Where basically it selects all the different powerball numbers you can possibly have and your select numbers. I recall looking into it briefly a few years back and saw it was like marginally better odds or something and that's been my play since. There's only been a handful of 100m+ in the past few years but I think last I recall I'm actually net positive despite how much it costs to powerhit each time (a few years back I won like $900 which I think was the powerball + 4 numbers)
•
u/Jaybb3rw0cky Deltron from Point Cook 4h ago
Yeah same. I think I remember reading as well that it's something like the best odds-to-winnings ratio of all of our lotteries, so there's that as well.
But you're right. going in alone is pricy. It's like $35 or something for the entry-level power-hit, and like $44 or something for a row of five or something absurd. That's a lot of money if you're doing it frequently. The syndicate that I entered resulted in a ticket that cost about $35 but was worth $400 or something. Just means if I won something (such as the $900 that you did) I'd be splitting it with others as well.
Either way, it's still gambling and definitely not worth it if you constantly buy tickets.
•
u/chonky__chonker 6h ago
It would be and I ponder the possibility of buying a ticket but then my brain decides to bring up the statistics regarding the probability of winning and I decide not to buy a ticket.
•
u/Jaybb3rw0cky Deltron from Point Cook 5h ago
I see it as a ticket to dream... an expensive ticket, but for just a little while, I can dream and hope that even winning 10% of first division would create so much contentment in my life.
•
u/EaeleButEeelier 5h ago
Me too. I keep thinking about buying the lotttery tickets, and my friend (who’s strangely enough an accountant) keeps wanting me to, but I think about the statistics and my brain is like no

u/Jaybb3rw0cky Deltron from Point Cook 5h ago
I think complaints by and large have been directed to Pedo OTUS, and since he's still doing his stupid shit, people are mostly over it and just accept it. There's literally nothing more that we can do other than maybe vote Green so that we end up with more electrification projects (which only get eaten up by data centres anyway so there's that problem, too).
It's the same as people no longer complaining about climate change. It really does feel like at this point the billionaires have won.
I think I should probably log off the internet for a while.

There has been a major derailment of a C class tram, it was hit by a car, and while derailingit has taken down the overhead power lines

Is it election year? or are state elections coming up or something? Just had a labor person come around and drop off pamphlets which is absolutely fine but its also so rare that they come around so i'm curious. Was gonna talk to her about the horrid state our hospitals are in since that's a thing that is currently a thing in this country.
•
u/MeanElevator Text inserted! 4h ago
First day on the internet?
In all seriousness, yes there is a state election next month.
It's great to see candidates campaigning in the community. Also shows that Labor is very worried in retaining power.
If you're seriously interested in plans for hospitals, reach out to your local member's office for info.
•
•
u/Jaybb3rw0cky Deltron from Point Cook 4h ago
Well done on keeping your head out of all the chaff, mate! We have a state election and it's finally been called, which means a lot of political advertisement can now be launched.
•
u/alsotheabyss 4h ago edited 4h ago
It hasn’t been called - writs will be issued on 3 November, and candidate nominations close on 9 November. Because Victoria has a four year fixed term these dates are predictable in the way they aren’t for a federal election.
There’s nothing preventing candidates campaigning before this date, and many have been doing for months, but sometimes there is little benefit in doing it earlier either. Parties are still finalising candidates.
•
u/Jaybb3rw0cky Deltron from Point Cook 3h ago
I was going off of the VEC sending out an email advising that the 28th of November is when the State Election will be held.

Does anyone know what happened on Victoria Parade? There's some works happening, no trams are running and there is a tram missing the front with smashed windows.

Is the tram pink? I saw a post earlier of a derailed tram, possibly there. I think a Camry was the culprit.

Effective Monday, work has put a blanket ban on smoking and vaping on their property and anyone caught doing so on the property will receive one warning and one warning only.
They've also made it firm that there will be no smoke / vape breaks any time other than your designated break times (morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea) and there's to be no smoking / vaping in cars in the staff car park.
It should have happened a few years ago, but it's finally happened. There's nothing worse than artificial fruit flavours wafting through the warehouse or through the hallways and as you walk outside to head to the car park.

Saw the post requesting blood donors so got off my arse and... I'm stuck waiting to see if meds I'm on are compatible. Well, I tried.
Cat is back home, stoned AF and COMPLETELY over it. If you listen carefully you can almost hear him muttering to himself something that sounds an awful lot like "Fucking fuck fuckers, gonna burn this place to the fucking ground". Even then I had to clean up the language a bit.

I LOVED that about the first control game. Resonant has entirely failed to scratch the same itch.

Ah shit, really? I was worried about that when they said it was no longer going to be set within the Oldest House. But yup - Control is one of our favour games in the house because of how much they leaned into the SCP. So damn good.
Wifey is playing the newest Alan Wake and watching her is making me itch for a really good SCP experience.

We're trying to get Jaybber Jnr into a good routine with his sleep which has meant a 7am alarm for the house. But on days where I have to drag my arse into the office I have to get up at 6:15am. Add to that knowing that the relative temp outside was nudging zero and yeah... definitely feeling it.
90 minute sleep in though. I would honestly consider renting my kidney out for that kind of reward.

Cash discounts should start to become a thing businesses offer. A few cafes/restaurants local to me have raised prices in response to the removal of credit card fees. As someone who always pays by cash it's so shitty I have to pay extra to subsidise the costs of people who are actually generating that expense for the business.
It's comical. A change intended to eliminate extra costs ends up with the user still paying more.
•
•
u/Beast_of_Guanyin 9h ago
Processing cash costs more than processing cards. You aren't subsidising card payments, they're subsidising your payments.
Cash only gets a discount as a way of dodging tax. That's it.
•
u/SadSafety9009 9h ago
Sure, there are time and labour costs associated with handling cash, but there's nothing to suggest these universally exceed card processing fees, or that card paying customers are always subsidising cash paying customers. That speaks more to the business itself and its operating costs, rather than something you can make a blanket statement about.
•
u/Beast_of_Guanyin 9h ago
You made a blanket statement about cash subsidising cards. I pointed this out with a similarly blanket statement correcting your false assertion.
I can absolutely say cash is more expensive than card because of all the documented expenses around handling, sorting, security, and labour. There might be instances where it isn't but those wouldn't apply to restaurants.
•
u/SadSafety9009 8h ago
Except I wasn't making a blanket statement about cash versus card processing costs. I'm referring to specific businesses I regularly visit where staff have explicitly told me prices have increased to offset the removal of card surcharges. So now I'm paying more to cover a cost I previously avoided by paying cash. That's the point I'm making.
