🖋 PILOT S10 (0.4mm) — That rich, transparent wine-red barrel paired with a heavy-duty knurled metal grip. 0.4mm is such an underrated sweet spot for crisp linework. 🖋 Pentel GRAPHGEAR 1000 (0.5mm) — Striking matte metallic red finish with matching oval rubber pads integrated right into the grip.
Same color theme, totally different tactile experiences. Which red grip catches your attention more? 👇
Staedtler Graphite 760 – model 760 07
0.7 mm (available in 0.5, 0.7 and 1.3 mm)
MATERIALS:
The Graphite has a plastic body, rubber grip, stainless-steel pocket clip and metal cone tip, sleeve and “eraser ring”. The body and the grip have a triangular cross section, with well-rounded vertices. Internally there’s a stainless-steel spring, plastic lead tube and a hybrid clutch (three plastic chucks and a brass collet).
ERASER:
As a rule of thumb, Staedtler’s mechpens always come with a very good eraser, and the Graphite is not an exception 💪. Twist that metal ring on the top and you’ll extend the white latex rubber eraser, a rod of 34 × 4 mm. Honestly, in terms of functionality, one of the best!
MEASUREMENTS:
As for size, with the tip extended (and obviously with the eraser retracted), the Graphite measures 145 mm. On my scale it weighed 15.15 g, and its center of mass is located at 70 mm from the tip. Measuring from vertex to vertex at the body there’s a distance of 11.4 mm. However, that tapers down to the grip, and then it assumes a round profile right above the cone tip, with a diameter of 9.7 mm.
FEATURES:
Not counting the triangular profile (and the most excellent eraser), the Graphite also counts on a retracting lead sleeve. Press the cap down while pushing the sleeve against the paper and it will retract into the cone tip, making it safe for pocket carry.
AESTHETICS:
In general terms, I have to say that the Graphite looks good, but in a very pedestrian way 😕. I think that the Navy-blue body blends very well with the black grip and metal accents. Nonetheless, I can’t say it’s a very inspiring design… If you don’t like the Navy-blue body, then I’m sorry to say that you’re out of luck, since this is the only color option available.
ERGONOMICS:
I’m a bit divided here 🤔. In one hand, the rubber grip offers a very nice tactile sensation, and the 11 mm of “diameter” is great. On the other hand, there’s the triangular profile. Even though the vertices are very well-rounded, I’m not sure I can say this is a comfortable pencil for extended use. As a side note, there’s zero tip wobble and zero rattling, so that’s a plus.
MY THOUGHTS:
In the end, I have to say that in general terms, the Graphite is a nice mechpen. Well, at least if you’re okay with a triangular profile. The eraser is superb, and if you don’t mind the triangular format, it is very nice for general use. But if I’m going to complain, it will be about the generic looks, and of course, the plastic clutch. Being a geek, I’ll always complain about a plastic clutch 🤷♂️. The Graphite is not ugly, far from that, but it’s just “too normal” and with no flare in terms of looks.
Aside from those two points, it’s a nice general purpose mechpen that I think has a positive value for the money. Just don’t forget about the triangular profile.
These are wonderful writing instruments.
I seem to like modern and futuristic designs that people in the past might have imagined. Looking at it now, it's definitely not a futuristic design, but rather a design that clearly has an old vintage feel, with a certain modern touch. I like that kind of thing.
Like Tombow Variable, Zoom La Nave, Pentel Accu Graph, and Lamy's steady sellers.
Therefore, I recently purchased noblesse and Ps1045.
I also tried taking pictures of wood mp. Actually, this side is a ongoing newly made handmade mechanical pencil, but it seems to be in the opposite position because it contains vintage elements.
Do you guys have any other reccomendations for leads for these? 1.18mm. These 4b leads are really nice but they're still a little short compared to the stock ones. Haven't tried the yard o led 2b leads yet.
Does anyone else have yard o led? Would love to see them
I bought a Zebra Drafix a few weeks ago. It's a very nice pencil, and the more I use it, the more it reminds me of the P200. The only downside is that the plastic feels a bit cheap, but I can say it's a quality pencil.
I just got this Tombow 0.5 to add to my collection. I went to the craft store to pick up Velcro and glue and they had a small selection of mechanical pencils this one stood out and I grabbed it for $5. Anyone have any experience with one of these? I haven’t added a pencil to my collection in a long time so I was due.
I understand that the 2.0mm are commonly refered to lead holder. But i still struggle to understand the difference between each mechanical pencils.
Does the writing experience is significantly different? What does the thinner lead has that the 2.0mm doesn’t? And vise versa. Also, if anyone has both types, which do you prefer?
Anyway appreciate the thoughtful input given. I am still relatively new in the mechanical pencil as well as the wooden pencil. Currently writing with the tombow mono 100 and tombow 8900 with the KUM automatic long point. I do have Uni9800 but in the i prefer the tombow. (If anyone asking).
I love my Kuru Toga. I love the weight and balance. I love the looks of it. I only wish the grip section was a little thicker. I am thinking of getting one with the wood section but am wondering if folks have any other recommendations for a pen of similar quality but with a thicker grip section? Also pictured is my Pilot Vanishing Point fountain pen for reference. I would love a mechanical pencil that is somewhere between my Kuru Toga and my VP in thickness.
Hi there! I have this very simple (and old) clutch pencil, but when I press the cap the jaws opens and the lead doesn't drop through from the barrel. It looks like that there is some friction, maybe dirt/gunk?
I used to have an almost identical pencil, and it was very easy to take apart by unscrewing the jaws. With this one, however, they seem to turn freely without being able to unscrew them. Thanks!
