Discussion Appreciation for the 2010's Basic Bastard Era of Mens Fashion

For me personally the Basic Bastard era trend came at a perfect time. I was in my late 20's to early 30's and settled into my corporate career. I wanted to be fashionable yet presentable in the office and outside the office. Basic Bastard was PERFECT. Slim chinos and OCBD was the base then expand from there with layers. If I wanted to step it up one day I come in with a slim fit suit that looks tailormade in contrast to the boomers in the office wearing a baggy illfiting suit from Jos A Bank. Then I changed my hairstyle to the side part combover(which I STILL have to this day)

It was awesome because the trend perfectly fit the the season of life I was in. I dressed more like an adult AND it was fashionable and hip. The same outfit I'd wear in the office I could wear at a Christmas party, a date night with my girlfriend, or even on the streets of SOHO and be considered stylish. It was an awesome time because the style was so versatile.

Now if I go out somewhere with a basic bastard chinos and OCBD my friends would ask "did you just leave the office?" To be hip and stylish today the outfit looks like something way out in left field that if you wore in an office people would question your outfit. If you wore that in a non fashion forward city people would wonder "what is up with this guy?" What you wear in the office, on a date night out, or on the streets of SOHO are all now different outfits.

I like the comfort of todays trends but I often fondly reminisce about 2010's mens fashion.

Discussion Man, wtf happened with Todd Snyder material quality

Post image
77 Upvotes

I could always justify the spend at Todd Snyder because their materials were high quality. Lots of 100% cotton/wool/etc....

But for the past 12-18 months, their prices haven't budged, and their materials are often crap.

For example, I was just checking out this Italian Fleece 1/4 zip. Materials are

  • 60% Polyester, 20% Virgin Wool, 20% Viscose

Price: $300!

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Fit Feedback New and Old Fall Jackets

Just got a Barbour Hereford off of ebay after trying it out at a store. Super comfortable, fairly warm, and I'm loving the sillhouette it gives me. Last pic is my usual fall jacket, been wearing it for the past year. Advice welcome! Also looking for recommendations for casual (black) pants/jeans with interesting texture. It's been tough finding any that fit a small waist and larger thighs. Been looking at sashiko jeans and pleated work pants, but they seem hard to find.

Generally seems to fit pretty well (hope was for a somewhat Husbands vibe), however, would you think getting a little bit more waist suppression done at the tailor would help with the slight boxiness?

As the title states, I’d like some opinions on whether the shirt should be tucked in or untucked, and whether or not the loafers work with the outfit

Haven’t worn this polo much but with the heat coming in today seemed appropriate. Really like the red with light pants. Last time I wore it with navy chinos and it looked off.

Red jacket vintage Polo RL Harrington unlined
Jean jacket vintage wrangler
Brighton belt
Levis panatela corduroy pants

Thoughts on the tie with jacket and cream shirt? Cashmere sport coat work with the texture of the pants?

Edit to add: Colors I know work, more thinking about texture here, and pattern of the tie.

Discussion Cheaper alternatives to men’s bracelets?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I really love the look of this Miansai men’s bracelet, the gold being present but not obnoxious is a huge sell for me. For 2 reasons this makes it a hard/impossible buy: 1. Waaay too expensive, I don’t think I would spend more than 130-200$ on a bracelet. 2. The sizing is too small on the website (7.8-8.1in wrist) if anybody knows of any similar men’s bracelets with ideally a slight gold accent it would be greatly appreciated.

Styling Advice Advice on leveling basics?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello!

I’m looking for advice on how to level up the basics. I wear mostly t-shirts/hoodies and jeans (lax dress code at the job), but I feel like I could do this better. I’m bad at this kind of stuff and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. What can I do to level up the basics?

If it matters — I’m 5’9”, and weigh roughly 180. I used to weigh 235 so most of my clothes are bigger right now (since I’m still determining my maintence weight).

I’m getting married this December in Scotland and would love some advice on choosing the right tie please!

I will be wearing a blue & brown check suit, white shirt, brown boots.

I am torn between going for a solid silk tie, or something with subtle texture. Not sure if pattern would be too much?

Open to colour and pattern suggestions and would really appreciate links for suggestions.

Pictures of the suit (ignore the tie in the pic), the button hole, and bridal bouquet.

Question How do I get these stains out of a suede jacket?

Post image

I don't know where these stains came from but they're all over my jacket all a sudden. They are slightly rough in texture and they shine in the light. I tried using a brush, an eraser, and rubbing alcohol and none of it has worked.

Question Is this suit jacket too long?

I've seen people say its should cover my bottom at the back which it does, I was wondering if it looks too long at the front. It's a regular fit 38R, a 38S is also available. I know the sleeves are a bit too long as well. Thanks!
